1. What Chicago area band spiced up the charts with "Sugar and Spice"?

Answer: The Cryan' Shames

The "Shames" claim to be the first rock group out of Chicago to sign a national recording contract. They also had a hit with a cover of the Drifters' "Up on the Roof".
2. At 890 on the AM dial, what Chicago radio station featured DJ's Dick Biondi, Clark Weber, Art Roberts and Larry Lujack playing hits from the "Silver Dollar Survey"?

Answer: WLS

WLS first went on the air on April 12, 1924. The station was owned and operated by Sears Roebuck & Co. to target their lucrative farming market. The call letters stood for World's Largest Store. In May of 1960, WLS switched to a rock format and became a wholly owned subsidiary of ABC.

Although he never sold millions of records, Chicago native Steve Goodman enjoyed wide critical acclaim and a loyal following of fans. A few of the artists who covered his songs are Jimmy Buffet, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and of course, Arlo Guthrie. Steve lost his 16 year fight with Leukemia in 1984, the same year his beloved Cubs lost the NLCS to the San Diego Padres.

As an answer to the British Invasion, The New Colony Six performed in colonial garb and have been credited with starting "Chicago's Rock Revolution" in 1965. The "Colony" had rented the first floor of a two-story flat in California and another band had rented the second floor.

After returning from a performance they met the other band in the parking lot and both bands were wearing identical suits. The other band was Paul Revere & the Raiders.
6. Which of the following songs was a 1968 hit for Friend and Lover?

Answer: Reach Out in the Darkness

Born in Galena, Illinois; singer Jim Post and his then wife Cathy preformed under the name Friend and Lover. In 1986 Jim began writing plays. His first play, "Galena Rose" has been preformed over 1500 times in Chicago.
7. Perhaps the best-known group from Chicago, The Buckinghams had five top 40 hits. Which of the following is NOT one of those hits?

Answer: Gloria

"Gloria" was a hit for another Chicago act, The Shadows of Knight. The Buckinghams reached number one when "Kind of a Drag" knocked The Monkees' "Daydream Believer" out of the number one spot. The other two hits by The Buckinghams are "Susan" and "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)".

Answer: The Earl of Old Town

The "Earl" was opened in 1961 by Earl J.J. Pionke. Unlike many club owners, Earl never viewed the resident talent as property to be exploited. "They are my kids, my pals, I love 'em" he was quoted to say. The performers returned that loyalty and perhaps that is why they performed so well on Earl's stage.
9. What was the one and only top ten hit for the American Breed?

Answer: Bend Me, Shape Me

The American Breed hailed from Cicero and claim to be the first intergrated rock group in the U.S.A. Two of the members of this quartet went on to join Rufus with Chaka Khan.

Answer: Benny Goodman

Clarinetist and band leader, Benny Goodman, was born in Chicago in 1909 and made his professional debut at Chicago's Central Park Theater in 1921. He died in 1986.
