6. Which act had an unlikely transatlantic hit in 1966 with the novelty song 'Winchester Cathedral'?

From Quiz A Musical World Tour

Answer: The New Vaudeville Band

The New Vaudeville Band came into existence when songwriter Geoff Stephens hired a group of session musicians to go into the studio to record his novelty song 'Winchester Cathedral'. Much to Stephens' surprise the record became a hit, reaching the top ten in his native UK and topping the singles chart in the USA. Such was the popularity of the single that it led to requests for the band to tour in the USA. Unfortunately, since the band did not strictly exist, being only session musicians hired for the one-off recording session, Stephens was obliged to act quickly to recruit a live band. One of the members of The New Vaudeville Band was Bob Kerr, formerly of The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The band did go on to have a few more hit singles in both the UK and USA, but their fame was short-lived and 'Winchester Cathedral' remains by far their most famous song.

10. Which member of KISS recorded "New York Groove" on his 1978 solo album?

From Quiz Songs Referencing New York

Answer: Ace Frehley

British musician Russ Ballard composed "New York Groove" which was covered by Ace Frehley on his 1978 solo album. In 1978 each member of KISS recorded a solo album and Ace included the cover tune on his album which was subsequently released as a single. The song made the US Top Twenty and became part of the group's touring lineup. During their 1996 reunion tour KISS performed "New York Groove". Songwriter Russ Ballard was a guitarist for British groups including Unit 4 + 2, The Roulettes, and Argent. His vocals can be heard on Argent's hit single "Hold Your Head Up". It has been used in countless markets: film, TV, advertising, spoofs, etc.

14. From what tune is this lyric fragment: "From Atlanta Georgia, goin' down to the border"?

From Quiz Cities in 60s Songs

Answer: Funky Street

Soul singer Arthur Conley first started recording in 1959, but it wasn't until 1967 when, under the tutelage of Otis Redding, Conley scored with his biggest hit "Sweet Soul Music." 15. The Kinks had a 1967 hit record entitled '... Sunset' the missing word is a famous London railway station can you tell me which one?

From Quiz London in Song

Answer: Waterloo

'Waterloo Sunset' by The Kinks, reaching #2 in the UK charts and hitting the top 10 in much of the rest of Europe, but not charting in the US, is the story of two lovers walking across a bridge spanning the Thames, the story being sung by a person watching them. (one of their best in my opinion). The song was originally to be named 'Liverpool Sunset' but Ray Davies thought there were too many songs about Liverpool already. (Thanks to Dalgleish for that little titbit). Waterloo Station was opened in 1848 and is the largest station in the UK and with 88 million passengers in 2008 is also the busiest. Strangely it doesn't feature on the original English Monopoly board.

16. The song "Murder on Music Row" is set in what Tennessee city?

From Quiz Tennessee Towns and Cities in Song

Answer: Nashville

George Strait and Alan Jackson paired up to sing this song during the 1999 Country Music Association's awards show. Although not released as a single the song reached number 38 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. The song is not about an actual murder but it mourns the "murder" of traditional country music by the modernization of the genre. It was written by Larry Cordle and Larry Shell.

17. Known as the Red City which African city features in a song containing the lyric: "Looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes"?

From Quiz Musical Cities

Answer: Marrakesh Express

"Marrakesh Express", recorded by Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1969. Already a supergroup they were about to get even bigger with the addition of Neil Young in late 1969. The rest is history.

18. What pop rock band, named after the "windy city" of the midwestern United States, had hits including "If You Leave Me Now" & "Hard To Say I'm Sorry"?

From Quiz Music Geography: US Cities

Answer: Chicago

The group were DePaul University music students who jammed their way to fame with hits from the late sixties until lead vocal Peter Cetera went solo in the eighties. The group is still intact up to this time but with several member changes along the way.

19. This supergroup released "Another Rainy Day In New York City" in 1976, only to have another of their songs blow right by it on the charts. Who were these Midwesterners?

From Quiz Songs Of The "Big Apple"

Answer: Chicago

The song was written by founding member Robert Lamm, and was released as a single in 1976 off the album "Chicago X". Disc-jockeys who played the album liked "If You Leave Me Now", and that got more heavy airplay than "Rainy Day". As a result, this song only was able to muster a number 32 placing on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and the record company rushed "If You Leave Me Now" (which eventually went to Number One on the charts) out to stores as a single less than 2 months after the release of "Another Rainy Day".

20. "From the South Bay to the Valley From the West Side to the East Side Everybody's very happy 'Cause the sun is shining all the time Looks like another perfect day." Sure, "I Love L.A.," but who sings it?
