But when you wake up in the mornin' the world still gets uptight
Well, here's nothin' that you ain't tried

But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned"

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'm sitting in the railway station Got a ticket to my destination On a tour of one-night stands, my suitcase and guitar in hand And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band" Title please!

Answer: Homeward Bound

Simon and Garfunkel's follow up to "Sounds Of Silence", this song reached a commendable #5 on the charts. Altogether, they would have three #1 hits and eight top 40's before their split in 1971. Together, they would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990.
2. "Set me free why don't ya babe Get out of my life why don't ya babe 'Cause you don't really love me" The name of this Supremes hit?

Answer: You Keep Me Hangin' On

The Supremes were in the midst of a hot streak in late 1966 - early 1967 with four consecutive #1 hits. This was the second one of the sequence following "You Can't Hurry Love" and preceding "Love Is Here And Now You're Gone" and "The Happening". Then they became Diana Ross and The Supremes and the "mojo" was broken.

They would only have two more #1 hits in three years. In 1970, Ross went solo and The Supremes would never again have a chart topper. Incidently, Vanilla Fudge covered the song a year later and charted at #6 with it.
3. Consider these lyrics. "You're the kind of person you meet at certain dismal dull affairs Center of a crowd, talking much too loud running up and down the stairs Well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years And though you've tried you just can't hide your eyes are edged with tears You better stop, look around, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes" Title please!

Answer: 19th Nervous Breakdown

Harsh stuff from the pen of Jagger and Richards and we're left wondering about the object of their warnings. It was a #2 song for three weeks early in 1966.
4. This was a #2 song for The Lovin' Spoonful. Will you be able to name it? "And even if time ain't really on my side It's one of those days for taking a walk outside I'm blowing the day to take a walk in the sun And fall on my face in somebody's new mowed lawn"

Answer: Daydream

A Sebastian composition, it paints a picture of a young man so smitten with a gal that he just floats through the day daydreamin' of her. Mmmmm, I can relate!
5. "Girl, you thought you found the answer on that magic carpet ride last night But when you wake up in the mornin' the world still gets uptight Well, here's nothin' that you ain't tried To fill the emptiness inside But when you come back down, girl Still ain't feelin' right" Perhaps the first anti-drug song ever to become a hit, sung by Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Answer: Kicks

The song peaked at #4 in April 1966. It was written, much to my surprise, by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil who have written such classics as "I Just Can't Help Believing" for B.J.Thomas, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" for The Righteous Brothers and "Blame It On the Bossa Nova" for Eydie Gorme. As of 2004, they've been married and collaborating on songs for 43 years. Pretty remarkable!
6. "I was five and he was six We rode on horses made of sticks He wore black and I wore white He would always win the fight" What song was this?

Answer: Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)

Sonny Bono wrote the song and Cher took it to #2 on the charts. Although still married at the time, Cher had five solo top forty songs in the late 1960's. All were produced by Sonny and he wrote the majority of them.
7. Bob Dylan: "Well, they'll stone you when you're at the breakfast table They'll stone you when you are young and able They'll stone you when you're riding in your car And they'll stone you when you're playing your guitar But I would not feel so all alone Everybody must get stoned"

Answer: Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

Now I have to believe that Dylan was a little "stoned" when he wrote this classic, a #2 hit. If anyone has any insight as to how the title evolved, I'd love to hear from ya. It's one of the few occasions that I know from the earlier days of rock music where the song's title is not reflected somewhere within the lyric.
8. "My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine, softer than a sigh My love is deeper than the deepest ocean, wider than the sky My love is brighter than the brightest star That shines every night above And there is nothing in this world That can ever change my love" A #1, what was this song's title?

Answer: My Love

Petula Clark made this her second #1 hit almost exactly a year after "Downtown" became her first. Both were written by Tony Hatch and he would write several more hits for her. Alas, however, there would be no more #1's among them.
9. "Every morning I would see her waitin' at the stop Sometimes she'd shop and she would show me what she'd bought All the people stared as if we were both quite insane Someday my name and hers are going to be the same" A Hollies hit entitled ________?

Answer: Bus Stop

The Hollies formed in Manchester, England in 1962 and over the years, have had considerably more success in the U.K. than in North America. This particular song was #2 there, #5 here, for example.
10. "Anytime you want to you can turn me onto Anything you want to, anytime at all When I kiss your lips, ooh I start to shiver Can't control the quivering inside" This was yet another #2 song in 1966. The title?

Answer: Groovy Kind Of Love

This was the second and last hit for The Mindbenders. The song was written by Toni Wine and Carole Bayer (later Carole Bayer Sager) who had just commenced a writing collaboration that would continue for three years. However, this would be the only big hit they would create together. Later, Wine would co-write "Candida", a hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn in 1970, while Carole Bayer Sager went on to more than modest fame co-writing a number of hits in the 1970s and 1980s... among them were: "Midnight Blue" by Melissa Manchester in 1975, Leo Sayer's Number One hit "When I Need You" in 1977, Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better" from the Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me", also from 1977, and most notably, "Arthur's Theme", sung by Christopher Cross for the movie "Arthur" in 1981.
