Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Three Dog Night' had three incredible lead singers. Which one of these was not one of the three lead singers?

Answer: Jimmy Greenspoon

In the original composition of the band Jimmy Greenspoon played keyboards, Michael Allsup played guitars, Joe Schermie played bass, and Floyd Sneed played drums and percussion. Danny and Cory are the two lead singers who are still touring.
2. When in the Australian outback, aborigines sleep in holes dug in the ground and take their dingo dogs to bed for warmth. The number of dogs depends on how cold the night is. This is where the name of the group comes from.

Answer: True

Danny Hutton's girlfriend read an article about this custom in 'Mankind Magazine'. The article stated that a 'three dog night' indicated a very cold night, which appealed to the group because of the three lead singers.
3. Like John and Yoko, 'Three Dog Night' did a naked album cover.

Answer: True

The original cover for 'It Ain't Easy' featured the band members in a very obvious state of undress, although unlike John and Yoko, all important parts were strategically covered. However this nod to decency wasn't enough, and the albums were quickly pulled because of objections from retailers.
4. One of the reasons that the band was so successful was because they wrote most of their own material.

Answer: False

In fact they wrote very few of their own songs. They did covers of songs by such incredible artists as Lennon/McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell, as well as songs from many other well-respected and unknown songwriters.
5. Enough with the background information, let's have some fun with the lyrics, I'll tell you the words, you tell me the song title. I'll start with an easy one; 'I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him drink his wine...'

Answer: Joy To The World

Written by Hoyt Axton this is probably the most recognized of all of their songs. Interestingly enough it was almost not recorded as most of the band memebers saw it as more of a children's song.
6. 'It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside. I'm not one of those who can easily hide.'

Answer: Your Song

This was one of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs that they covered. The other was a much less well known number called 'Lady Samantha'.
7. 'It's just no good anymore since she went away, now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday.'

Answer: One

Written by Harry Nilsson, this was the first 'Three Dog Night' hit that made it into the top ten.
8. 'This is the craziest party there could ever be, don't turn on the lights 'cause I don't want to see.'

Answer: Mama Told Me Not To Come

This one was written by Randy Newman and went to #1 for the group. Cory sang lead, proving how versatile his voice could be.
9. 'Love comes, love goes, I give my heart and no one knows that I do. It's for...'

Answer: It's For You

This song is a Lennon/McCartney composition, but the arrangement is pure 'Three Dog Night'. It was originally done by Cilla Black, backed by a big orchestra. 'Three Dog Night' did it a capella.
10. 'And wrapped around the music is the sound of someone promising they'll never go. You swear you've heard it before as it slowly rambles on.'

Answer: An Old Fashioned Love Song

'Coming down in three part harmony', this song was written by Paul Williams. When Chuck recorded this song his nose was broken because of a car accident. As a result he sang the song in a key he had never sung in before. It turned out to be another huge hit for them.
11. 'How can people be so heartless, how can people be so cruel?'

Answer: Easy To Be Hard

This one was written by Galt MacDermot, James Rado, and Gerome Ragni. This song was originally recorded by Jennifer Warnes, and was also a hit from the Broadway musical 'Hair'.
12. 'Ain't no two ways about it, I just can't live without you. Let's get together, I can't wait forever, I can't wait forever. Here I am, take my hand, I'm your man.'

Answer: One Man Band

This song was written by Tommy Kaye, January Tyme and Billy Fox. It was a great tune and remarkable because it was the first time that Danny and Cory sang together in two part harmony.
13. 'Before the breathing air is gone, before the sun is just a bright spot in the nightime. Out where the rivers like to roam, I stand alone and take back something worth remembering.'

Answer: Out In The Country

Written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols, this song is very near to Cory's heart. When they introduced this song at the concert last night, they called it 'a love song to nature'.
14. 'Well I've never been to England, but I kinda like the Beatles.'

Answer: Never Been To Spain

Another one by Hoyt Axton, this was sung by Cory and released on the 'Harmony' album. It's another song that they have a lot of fun with when performing live.
15. 'So hard, what the devil are we coming to? I said so hard, so little time and so much to do.'

Answer: The Family Of Man

Written by Paul Williams and Jack Conrad, with lead vocals by all three of them, this was another ecological themed song that was very important to Cory.
16. '...but now I find my love has gone away. Why didn't you stay? I want to know why didn't you stay?'

Answer: Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer

Also released on 'Harmony' this song was written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright. They played a concert with Stevie at Madison Square Garden where he made them happy by telling them 'you did a wonderful job with my song'.
17. '...the whole world looks upon a sight, a beautiful sight And now a child can understand that this is the law of all the land...'

Answer: Black and White

Written by David Arkin and Earl Robinson, this was another huge hit for them. The band brought in their own kids, and nieces and nephews to sing along in the chorus.
18. I'll give you two lines with this one. 'Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain with the rain in...' 'I can tell my sister by the flowers in her eyes on the road to...'

Answer: Shambala

Written by Daniel Moore and sung by Cory this one was a big hit even though it caused a fight between Cory and Chuck who didn't want to release it as a single.
19. 'Take you to the country, take you to the shore, show you to my garden, I know you'll make it grow. If you'll let me...'

Answer: Let Me Serenade You

This one was written by John Finley, sung by Corey, and released on the 'Cyan' album.
20. 'Baby there's an enormous crowd of people, they're all after my blood. I wish maybe they'd tear down the walls of this theatre, let me out, let me out.

Answer: The Show Must Go On

Written by Leo Sayer and Dave Courtney, Danny first saw Leo singing it on t.v. in England. Although it was originally sung by Chuck, Cory does such a fun job of singing it in concert that you'd never know that it wasn't originally his.
