Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1960s hit by Peter and Gordon was a retelling of an 11th century incident which was brought up to modern times. What was the song?

Answer: Lady Godiva

The song is actually about a performer in a burlesque show who has long hair, and must cut it in order to appear in the show. It was the duo's last major hit, peaking at number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. Prior to this hit, they had recorded several songs which were written by other artists. "A World Without Love" and "Nobody I Know" were big hits for the duo, and both were written by Paul McCartney.

Another of their major hits, "I Go To Pieces", was written by Del Shannon.
2. This B-side 1960s tune by The Rolling Stones still managed a Top 40 placing despite being overshadowed by the more popular A-side. What Stones song fits this topic?

Answer: Lady Jane

"Lady Jane" was the B-side to "Mother's Little Helper". It was part of the Stones album called "Aftermath". The 1966 release scored very well. Even though "Mother's Little Helper" had a number eight placing on Billboard's U.S. Hot 100 charts, "Lady Jane" still was able to manage a number 24 placing at the same time.
3. Yes, The Beatles are represented in this quiz. But which 'Lady' song did they release?

Answer: Lady Madonna

Interesting information? Anything anyone does NOT know about The Beatles? This song was a 1968 release which was a number four U.S. Billboard Hot 100 hit. In the U.K. it went to number one. About the only thing mentionable is that this was the last single that was cut on Parlaphone Records in the U.K., and Capitol Records in the U.S.

After this single, all other material was on the Apple label.
4. Bob Dylan is another artist who needs no introduction. What song of his has 'lady' in the title?

Answer: Lay Lady Lay

"Lay Lady Lay" was a 1969 release by Dylan that became one of his biggest hit singles, reaching number seven in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and number five in the U.K. The song was originally supposed to be part of the soundtrack for the motion picture "Midnight Cowboy" but wasn't submitted in time to make it.

The song was also offered to The Everly Brothers by Dylan prior to his recording of the tune, but they declined. Oops!
5. Gary Puckett and The Union Gap had one of their major hits with this 'Lady'. Who was she?

Answer: Lady Willpower

Gary Puckett and The Union Gap were one of the more successful groups of the late 1960s, churning out six straight Top 20 Billboard Hits in less than two full years between 1967 and 1969. "Lady Willpower" was their first hit of 1968. It was a number two Billboard Hot 100 hit and was sandwiched in between the late 1967 smash hit "Young Girl", and the fourth hit of the six, "Over You" which was released later in 1968. That would be followed in 1969 by "Don't Give In To Him", and "This Girl Is A Woman Now".

Their debut hit, the first of these six songs was "Woman, Woman" which appeared in the fall of 1967.
6. What kind of 'Lady' was Cher singing about in the 1970s?

Answer: Dark Lady

"Dark Lady" was a hit for Cher in 1974. It was her third number one single in the U.S. on The Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also went to number one in Canada and Sweden. The song featured a gypsy fortune teller, who, it is revealed later, is having an affair with the singer's husband, and ultimately pays the price.
7. Tom Jones sang a song in the early 1970s which fits this 'Lady' category. Name it.

Answer: She's A Lady

This song was released in 1971 and Jones scored a number two placing on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts, making it his biggest U.S. release. The song was written by Paul Anka. In 2000 it was featured in the Sandra Bullock film, "Miss Congeniality".
8. Labelle sang about a sweet "Lady" in one of their biggest hits. What lady was this?

Answer: Lady Marmalade

This 1974 hit by Labelle made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the U.S., spending a week at the number one position. The song was co-written by Bob Crewe (of Four Seasons fame) and Kenny Nolan, who had also teamed up to write Frankie Valli's "My Eyes Adored You". One of the things it was known for were its sexually explicit lyrics, sung in French.

The loose translation would be "Do you want to sleep with me tonight?" Strong lyrics in a pop song. No matter. 'Rolling Stone Magazine's' "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" lists this song at number 479.
9. This speedy "Lady" made a hit for Jan and Dean. Who was she?

Answer: The Little Old Lady From Pasadena

Jan and Dean added this to their collection of hits in the early and mid 1960s. The song was about an older lady who had three fast cars in her garage and couldn't be beat racing through the streets of Pasadena. The song was a big hit for the duo, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1964.
10. Kenny Rogers wrote and recorded a U.S. number one hit called "Lady" in 1980.

Answer: False

While Rogers' recording of the song was in fact a number one hit Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1980, it was actually written by Lionel Ritchie, who was a big fan of Rogers at the time. The song proved to be a boon for both Rogers and Ritchie, and was rated at number 47 on Billboard's "All Time Top 100".
11. Lou Rawls provided a song in the late 1970s that fits this 'lady' category. What was it?

Answer: Lady Love

"Lady Love" was a jazzy hit from Rawls in 1978 off his "When You've Heard Lou, You've Heard It All" album. It reached as high as number 24 on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts.
12. This was a mega hit for Johnnie Taylor in 1976. What kind of 'Lady' was Taylor singing about?

Answer: Disco Lady

Taylor had been recording since the 1960s and was most notably known until this time for his recording "Who's Making Love?" which was a number five hit in 1968. "Disco Lady" became his biggest hit ever. It spent four weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1976.

It was also the first record ever certified as platinum (two million copies sold) by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Another little known fact: This is the reportedly first Billboard number one hit to include the word "Disco" in the title.
13. This song was a hit for Bob Welch in 1978. What kind of "Lady" was he singing about?

Answer: Sentimental Lady

Welch was a former member of Fleetwood Mac, who realized great success in 1977 with a solo album called "French Kiss". This song was a re-mix of a Fleetwood Mac recording of 1972. It ended up as his first release from the album, and reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Welch also hit with "Ebony Eyes" off the same album.
14. The Commodores had a big hit in the late 1970s with this song which fits the category and reached the Top 10. How many "Ladies" were they singing about?

Answer: 3

"Three Times A Lady" was a song penned by Lionel Ritchie and brought to the charts by The Commodores in 1978. It was reportedly a song about Ritchie's affection for his daughter, wife and mother, hence the reference to three ladies in "Three Times". It was a number one hit for the group, and the only Motown song that was able to reach the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1978.
15. This song by Styx was not a hit when initially released, but eventually made the charts. What "Lady" song is this?

Answer: Lady

The song was originally released in 1972, and had some success locally in Styx' home base of Chicago, Illinois, but never made the national charts until it was re-released in 1974 by a new record label. It then became a national hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It was written by lead singer Dennis DeYoung, who reportedly wrote the song for his wife.
