Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Delta Lady
Answer: Joe Cocker
'Delta Lady' was written by the prolific songwriter Leon Russell. The song appeared on Joe's second album, which was called 'Joe Cocker!' and was released in 1969. Russell provided musical accompaniments on the album. As a single, 'Delta Lady' reached number ten on the UK Singles Chart.
2. Three Times a Lady
Answer: Commodores
The song was composed by Lionel Richie, who was the lead singer for the band before going on to an equally successful solo career. The song first appeared on the band's 1978 album 'Natural High' and became a hit single in the same year. It reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 and was also number one on the UK Singles Chart.
The band also reached number one in 1979 with another Richie song - 'Still' - the last hit before he went solo.
3. (Who's) That Lady
Answer: Isley Brothers
The band first released the song in 1964 under the title 'Who's That Lady', when it failed to make much impact. It was re-released in 1973 under the shorter title of 'That Lady', so I have given versions of both in the clue. On its second release, the song did rather better, reaching number six on the US Billboard Hot 100.
4. Lady D'Arbanville
Answer: Cat Stevens
The song was written about a real person - the actress Patti D'Arbanville, with whom Stevens had a relationship in the 1960s. The song was a UK hit in 1970, reaching number eight on the UK Singles Chart. Other hits, as Cat Stevens, include 'Wild World' and 'Peace Train' both in 1971 and both of which had some success in the USA as well. Stevens changed his name to Yusuf Islam in 1978, having adopted the Muslim religion and gave up performing for many years.
5. Lady Lynda
Answer: Beach Boys
Al Jardine wrote the song, although he had a lot of help from Johann Sebastian Bach since Jardine based the tune on Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring'. The name was a tribute to Jardine's wife, and was performed under different names once they divorced. It became a top ten hit in the UK, reaching number six on the UK Singles Chart.
6. Lady Marmalade
Answer: Labelle
The song has been recorded on several occasions, but the group Labelle was the first to take into the charts in 1974. They reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, making it their biggest hit by some distance. All Saints had a UK hit with the song in 1998 while a version by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink was featured in the film 'Moulin Rouge' in 2001. Released as a single, it reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in the same year.
7. She's a Lady
Answer: Tom Jones
The song was written by Paul Anka and released as a single by Tom Jones in 1971. It was particularly popular in North America, reaching the top of the Canadian RPM Charts and number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. It didn't do so well in the UK, although it did get to number thirteen on the UK Singles Chart.
8. Lady Madonna
Answer: The Beatles
'Lady Madonna' was a 'Paul song', although the songwriters are given as Lennon/McCartney, as is usual for songs written by either John or Paul. It was released in 1968 and hit the top of the charts in several countries, including the UK, although it stalled at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100.
9. Silver Lady
Answer: David Soul
Soul was better known as an actor, appearing in the television series 'Starsky and Hutch' during the 1970s. This fame enabled him to indulge his love of singing, leading to a number one hit in both the USA and UK with 'Don't Give Up on Us' in 1977. 'Silver Lady' was his third UK hit, another chart topper, although it fared less well in his home country.
10. Lady Willpower
Answer: Gary Puckett and the Union Gap
This was a 1968 hit for the group, following on from 'Woman, Woman' and 'Young Girl'. The band didn't manage a number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching number two with both 'Lady Willpower' and 'Young Girl', although the latter song did hit the top on the UK Singles Chart. I'm not sure the lyrics of either would be acceptable in these more politically correct times.
