Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the correct title of Tina Turner's number 5 hit from September 1989?

Answer: The Best

Various sports stars have since used "The Best" as their theme song, including boxer Chris Eubank and the late Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna. Many sports teams have also adopted it whenever they win a trophy, which is annoying, because I never liked it!
2. This singer-songwriter was formerly a member of the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. He reached number 13 in the UK charts in 1986 with "Higher Love", a song which reached number 1 on the Billboard chart across the Atlantic. What is his correct name?

Answer: Steve Winwood

Steve did very well to come back as strongly as he did in the 1980s, as he was nearly killed by a severe bout of peritonitis in the early 1970s.
3. What position did the Robbie Williams single "Angels" reach in the UK charts?

Answer: Number 4

"Angels" is now widely regarded as a modern day classic, regularly reaching the upper reaches of various "Greatest Singles Of All Time" polls. Heaven knows why - to me it sounds like three cats having a nasty argument.
4. How are Jack and Meg White related to each other in The White Stripes?

Answer: Ex- Husband and Wife

The duo were originally perceived as brother and sister, something they never denied. A marriage license and divorce certificate were found and posted on the Internet to dispel the rumour. They were, apparently, married for nearly 4 years between 1996 and 2000.
5. What was Elvis Presley's birth name?

Answer: Elvis Aron Presley

His parents used the middle name Aron in honour of Elvis' twin brother Garon, who died at birth.
6. What was the only album by The Smiths to hit number one in the UK?

Answer: Meat Is Murder

Rightly revered as the band's greatest achievement, and regularly listed as an all-time classic, "The Queen Is Dead" peaked at number 2 on the UK chart. I was actually lucky enough to interview guitarist Johnny Marr a few years ago and it was fascinating to hear him tell me that most of the band would only rank it as their third best album, with "Strangeways, Here We Come" being their pick of the bunch.
7. How did Mama Cass Elliott, of The Mamas and the Papas die?

Answer: Heart failure

The widely believed theory that Cass died after choking on a ham sandwich is in fact one of rock's great myths. She died in her sleep of heart failure. It is thought that the excessive weight she gained, coupled with the extreme crash diets she had been undertaking, contributed to her untimely demise.
8. Right Said Fred had just one number one single in the UK. What was it?

Answer: Deeply Dippy

Although "I'm Too Sexy" garnered a lot more airplay and was a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic, it was held from the number one spot by Bryan Adams' "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" which spent a colossal 16 weeks at the summit. "Deeply Dippy" hit the top some eight months later.
9. What was the last UK number one single for Blondie?

Answer: Maria

I wonder if you remembered that "Maria" was the band's comeback hit, 19 years after their previous number one, "The Tide Is High". Or did you fall into my trap and put "Atomic"?
10. Which of the following bands had the most UK top 40 singles during the 1990s?

Answer: Thunder

Astonishingly, Thunder achieved 16 top 40 hits in the 1990s, one more than Take That managed. U2 conjured up 14 and the Spice Girls, surprisingly, only had 9. Having said that, all of the latter band's hits reached number one except the number 2 "Stop", so I doubt whether Thunder would have made even the top 200 if I'd based this question on sales figures! Oh, and just for the record, Thunder's highest chart placing was number 18 with "A Better Man" in 1993!
