Answer: "The Sun always Shines on TV" by A-Ha

One of A-Ha's best remembered hits "Take on Me" peaked at number two.
Other songs from Scandinavia to hit the number one spot include "Barbie Girl" by Aqua who hailed from Denmark; I haven't bought a Danish pastry since!
3. Four number ones from America; which one was not on the Tamla-Motown label?

Answer: "Hey Girl, Don't Bother Me" by The Tams

"Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" reached number one in 1971; in Britain it was released on the Probe record label. The other three songs were all classic Motown hits.
4. Which one of these was not an instrumental number one?

Answer: "Only You" by The Flying Pickets

There are no instruments at all on The Flying Pickets acapella version of Yazoo's "Only You".
"Telstar" was the first American number one by a British group.
"Albatross" was Fleetwood Mac's only instrumental hit."
"Eye Level" was the theme tune to TV series "Van der Valk".
5. These songs all got to number one in (soccer) World Cup years. Which one was not an official England Football World Cup song?

Answer: Come on You Reds

Although 1994 was a World Cup year, "Come on You Reds" was a number one for the Manchester United squad in that year (with some help from Status Quo).
"Back Home" was a number one in 1970 for the England squad.
"World in Motion" topped the charts in 1990 featuring New Order and with that 'rap' from John Barnes.
"3 Lions '98" reprised The Lightning Seeds/Baddiel and Skinnner's hit from two years earlier.
6. On a more sombre note, which of these four was not a post-humous number one?

Answer: "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong was the oldest person to top the British charts when "What a Wonderful World" hit number one in 1968, some three years before his death.
"Way Down" went to number one in the month after Elvis's death in August 1977.
"Woman" went to the top following John Lennon's murder in December 1980.
"Living on My Own" was released the year following Freddie's death in 1992.
7. Four solo number ones here but which one was not self-penned?

Answer: "You Are Not Alone" by Michael Jackson

"You Are Not Alone" was a number one hit for Michael Jackson in 1995, it was written by R Kelly.
"Vincent" was Don Mclean's tribute to Van Gogh and went top in 1972.
"The Lady in Red" was top in 1986 and Lionel Ritchie said "Hello" in 1984.
8. All of these number ones were British entries into the "Eurovision Song Contest"; which one failed to win this most prestigious of prizes?

Answer: "Congratulations" by Cliff Richard

With the possible exception of Abba, very little good has ever come of "Eurovision", but maybe the sight of the appalling Cliff Richard losing it not just once, but twice, goes some way to making up for all the dross!
He lost in 1968 and again in 1973 with the completely dreadful "Power to all our Friends".
Sandie Shaw won in 1967, Brotherhood of Man inflicted their saccharine tosh upon us in 1976 and Bucks Fizz won it for their dance routine in 1981.
9. Which of these UK number ones was not recorded by a teenager?

Answer: "Long-Haired Lover From Liverpool" by Little Jimmy Osmond

Dear Little Jimmy was only nine years old when "Long-Haired Lover..." was inflicted upon us, quite what Liverpool had done to deserve that 'tribute' I don't know.
Helen Shapiro had her first number one hit when aged 14.
Tiffany was 16 when her cover of "I Think We're alone Now" hit the top spot.
Kylie was 19 when she had her first number one.
10. Here are four well known songs all of which have got to number one in Britain. Three of them have been taken to the top by at least two different acts; which of these songs has only been to the very top in one version? (Correct at end 2006).

Answer: American Pie

Somewhat surprisingly, Don McLean only got to number two with "American Pie" in 1972. The song had to wait until Madonna covered it in 2000 before hitting the top.
Taken from the movie "Blue Hawaii" Elvis hit number one in 1962 with "Can't Help Falling in Love"; it was taken back to the top by UB40 in 1993.
"Tragedy" was a number one for The Bee Gees in 1979 and again for Steps in 1998.
"Unchained Melody" has been a top-twenty hit for seven different acts and is the only song to hit number one in four different versions; Jimmy Young in 1955, The Righteous Brothers in 1990, Robson and Jerome in 1995 and by Gareth Gates (Yuk!) in 2002.

Once again all stats taken from "The Guinness Book of Hit Singles and Albums, 2006 Edition".
