Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of their singles, from which track did this line come? 'Take the chapstick, put it on your lips. Crack a smile...'

Answer: 'Oxford Comma'

Front man Ezra Koenig wrote this song about a group at his university who formed a 'society for the protection of the Oxford Comma'. Koenig couldn't understand why anyone would care that much about something so trivial and later composed this track. As an aside, the oxford comma aka the serial comma is a comma used before a conjuncture (usually the word and) in a list. Most experts think that it is largely unnecessary.
2. Which track is it? 'Around the corner, the house that modern art built...'

Answer: 'White Sky'

This was the group's fourth single release from their second album Contra.
3. This lyric is from the epic 'Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa'. Which word is missing from it though? 'Is your bed made? Is your _____________ on?

Answer: Sweater

'Kwassa Kwassa' is actually a dance rhythm made popular in the Congo which Koenig discovered whilst traveling. The song contains reference to Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel, a homage which encouraged the man himself to cover the single. He didn't like the sound of singing his own name though so changed the lyrics to say 'It feels so unnatural to sing your own name.'
4. From which song does this line come? 'Someone took a trip before you came to ski in the Alps...'

Answer: 'California English'

Tricky one that! The lyrics are spat out quite quickly which makes it tough to hear what is being said. If you got that then you're a proper fan!
5. What word is missing from this fine lyric from 'Horchata'? 'Winter's cold is too much to handle, Pincher crabs that _______ at your sandals.'

Answer: Pinch

Horchata is a drink of Spanish origin which is usually made from water, sugar and some kind of ground nut (traditionally Tigernut). Not my cup of tea but if it's good enough for the boys to write a song about then it must be doing something right!
6. From which tune does this lyric hail? 'In the afternoon you're out on the stone and grass and I'm sleeping on the balcony after class.'

Answer: 'Campus'

I can't think of anything greatly interesting to say about this song so I'm using a tenuous link here. The fish genus Hippocampus is composed solely of seahorses, the hippo part meaning horse and the campus part roughly meaning sea monster. Not really monsters are they?!?
7. How well do you know this one? What words are missing in this particular lyric from the hit single 'Cousins?' 'Caught in the melody, you wait in the car. You were born with _____________ and you're gonna use them all.'

Answer: ten fingers

This is one of Vampire Weekend's most popular tracks. It was famously used in the film 'The Kids Are All Right' and on the computer game 'Pro Evolution Soccer 11!'
8. From which classic track does this line come? 'A thousand years in one piece of silver, she took it from his lily white hand.'

Answer: 'A-Punk'

The group made their first ever television appearance on the David Letterman show to perform this song. It received pretty wide critical acclaim.
9. Can you remember what word completes the line of the hit song 'Mansard Roof?' 'The Argentines collapse in defeat, the Admiralty surveys the ________ of the fleet.'

Answer: remnants

Did you know that a mansard roof is a type of roof that has two slopes on each side with the lower slope at a steeper angle than the upper one? I cannot explain, however, why this inspired Koenig to write a song about it. It became the first track on their first album.
10. On which track would you find this lyric? 'Mystic seaport is that way. Don't you know that your life could be lost.'

Answer: 'Walcott'

That's right, it's 'Walcott!' The group tend to end most of their sets with this rousing, sing along, party tune and it ranks amongst my favourite tracks as well. I don't think it has anything to do with England footballer Theo though.
