Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Swedish death metal band places heavy emphasis on Norse- and Viking-related themes in its music, including making many references to Oden, the Norns, and Valhall, all the while maintaining a prominent Norse pride. Which band is this, which has music videos for the songs "The Pursuit of Vikings" and "Guardians of Asgaard", to name a few?

Answer: Amon Amarth

Frontman and vocalist Johan Hegg's addition to Amon Amarth, originally called "Scum" when formed in 1988, first started their Viking-themed lyrical inspiration. Speaking about Amon Amarth's genre, Johan Hegg said in an interview with The Metal Web, "We play death metal. We write about vikings so, therefore, some refer us to viking metal, but I have no idea what that is. I can't imagine the vikings veer into metal at all except on the swords and stuff. And musically, I guess they only played these strange lip instruments and some bongos or whatever."
2. Hailing from the Faroe Islands, this band shares a name with the one-handed Norse god of single combat and victory. Their music and lyrics are heavily influenced by Norse mythology and even traditional Faroese music. More recent discography includes a music video for "Hold the Heathen Hammer High" off of the album "By the Light of the Northern Star", released in 2009.

Answer: Tır

One of the original founders and frontman of Tır, Heri Joensen, has stated that "Tır's musical mission is to break down the walls that are erected between all the kinds of metal that have arisen over the years. Power-, doom-, black-, progressive-, gothic-, Viking-, folk-, ethnic- and epic metal. Walls and labels do nothing but fill people with prejudice."

Their more recent discography includes a few sparse songs entirely sung in Faroese, something which was more prevalent in their earlier, more "folk rock"-esque work.
3. The self-described "eyecatcher on every festival", this German Viking/epic death metal band channels the "passion, despair and hope" of its songs from tales of a Norse god of revenge said to have avenged the death of his father, Odin. Their discography includes a 2008 EP entitled "Face to Face" and the 2011 album, "A Hundred Miles".

Answer: Legacy of Vydar

The Norse god in question is Víğarr, sometimes written as Vidar or Vithar, who is said to have killed the monstrous wolf, Fenrir, at Ragnarök.
4. Flutes, tin whistles, bagpipes, and hurdy gurdies are some of the folk instruments you can hear among tracks by this Swiss folk/melodic death metal band, which incorporates the extinct Gaulish language into lyrics at times. Their discography includes the albums "Slania" and "Everything Remains (As It Never Was)", among others.

Answer: Eluveitie

With regard to Eluveitie's Gaulish lyrics, the basis for the songs in the extinct language comes from Gaulish texts such as prayers and invocations of gods. The title of the second full-length album, "Slania", comes from a name on a 2500-year-old tombstone which the vocalist saw.

Eluveitie was awarded the Metal Hammer "Up and Coming 2010" title at Germany's heavy metal music festival, Wacken Open Air.

By the way, a hurdy gurdy is a medieval stringed instrument, resembling a lute, whose sound is made by turning a cylindrical handle located beside the strings.
5. This band, hailing from Scotland, was originally called Battleheart before being signed to Napalm Records in 2007. Their discography includes the 2009 album "Black Sails at Midnight" and 2011 album "Back Through Time", featuring the keytar talents of lead vocalist Christopher Bowes. There are perhaps only two more words needed to describe this folk metal band, and they are "pirate metal".

Answer: Alestorm

Alestorm's name change was due to the similarity to another Napalm Records-signed band, "Battlelore". Their 2008 album "Captain Morgan's Revenge" might have been too obvious of a clue, what with its popularity (at least among the totally underground and limited number of pirate metal fans!). Like the perhaps equally popular band "Swashbuckle", Alestorm plays heavily into a pirate theme in their music and lyrics.

According to Wikipedia, they played their first live show as "Battleheart" just days after meeting each other for the first time.

In support of their then-new 2009 album, Alestorm participated in the "Black Sails Over Europe" tour with bands like Tır and Heidevolk in the same year.
6. This Finnish folk metal band, named after an ancient god of war, may be known for their red and black face paint or electric violin (as opposed to guitar) solos. Oh yeah, and for a 2007 single (a cover of a 1978 disco hit by "Boney M") called "Rasputin". Which group is this?

Answer: Turisas

Turisas have been characterized by U.K. heavy metal magazine "Metal Hammer" as "battle metal" since releasing their 2004 album of the same name, though the label hasn't caught on much past the magazine and its readers. There is also a music video for "Rasputin" (by Turisas).
7. This Finnish folk metal band's music can be described as a combination of black and death metal along with Finnish "humppa" folk music. Their discography, which dates to 1997, includes the 2004 album "Nattfödd" and 2010 album "Nifelvind". Which band is this, whose name is taken from a Finnish legend and whose lyrics are often in Swedish and touch on other myths and legends?

Answer: Finntroll

The fictional "Rivfader", a "Troll-King", and other trolls who try to defend their land against invading Christians are a theme in some of Finntroll's lyrics, as well as two priests by the names "Aamund" and "Kettil" who tend to interfere with these trolls. Current lyric writer (as of 2011), Jan Jämsen is also Finntroll's former keyboard player and vocalist. The latter position having ended "due to a viral-based tumor in his vocal cords which could not be removed surgically" in 2002, according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finntroll).

The Finntroll-inspired band Korpiklaani, also from Finland, have described their own music as "old people's music with heavy metal guitars", something which arguably applies to Finntroll's own work, as well.
8. Though it shares a name with a lesser known band from East Yorkshire, England, this Viking metal group hails from the Styria region of Austria. Their discography includes the well received albums "The Passage" and "Armored Bards", the former having spawned the fan favorite song, "Wolkenbruch" . Which band is this, whose rich folk metal sound comes free of any "folk instruments"?

Answer: Heathen Foray

Heathen Foray's "The Passage" found itself on the list of nominations for the Metal Storm (metalstorm.net) "Best Pagan/Viking/Folk Metal Album" of 2009, voted on by fans registered on the site. The album came in sixth, losing to some bands on the forefront of the Viking/folk metal scene such as Ensiferum and Tır.
9. Sharing a name with a wise character from "Beowulf", this Swedish band can boast the release of albums like "Midgardian Metal" and "With Gods and Legends Unite", both heavily saturated with references to Norse mythology. Which band is this, whose Viking-related theme evolved from one of misanthropy in their early demo?

Answer: Wulfgar

After releasing two demos in 2006, Wulfgar was signed by a Finnish record label, Kampas Records, with which they released "With Gods and Legends Unite" in 2007. Just a year later they went on to join a pagan, Viking, and folk metal label called Trollzorn.
10. Irish whistles, a mandolin and bodhrán might greet a listener of this Danish group's folk music among the more typical musical accessories to a metal band. Their history includes changing almost their entire member line-up as well as releasing albums such as "Ravnenes Saga" (2007) and "Mulmets Viser" (2010). Which band is this, whose name means "black sickness" in older Danish?

Answer: Svartsot

What started as a black metal band with folk music influence quickly evolved into having a melodic death metal sound and Danish lyrics about the country's history and folklore, as well as Nordic mythology- all changes discussed by the band members while they were still in the process of establishing the group's characteristics. Only a few years after their official formation, Svartsot would lose almost its entire line-up.

Svartsot has played in support of Volbeat, a more mainstream band also hailing from Denmark.
