Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Weird Al asked Kurt Cobain if he could do a parody on "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Kurt thought it was a great idea. What did Kurt think the song was going to be about?

Answer: food

In 1991, Al was trying to come up with a song to parody in order to market his album. He heard that Michael Jackson was coming out with a new album, but then he thought, "No, I can't do that again." But then he saw Nirvana perform on "Saturday Night Live", and this inspired him to make "Smells Like Nirvana". Kurt Cobain thought the song was going to be about food, but actually, it's about how no one can understand someone's lyrics.
2. "I Can't Watch This" was Al's very first parody on a rap song.

Answer: False

His first rap parody was actually "Isle Thing", a parody on "Wild Thing" by Tone Loc. There are a lot of parodies on "U Can't Touch This".
3. "Taco Grande" is a parody on "Rico Suave" by who?

Answer: Gerardo

Unlike most of Al's parodies, the music and tempo of this song are exactly right.
4. "You Don't Love Me Anymore" is an original, but the video is spoofing what song by Extreme?

Answer: "More Than Words"

Most people have asked Al in his early days, "You know, those parodies are pretty funny, but have you ever considered writing your own songs?" Al has made plenty of originals. In fact, he made more originals than he did parodies.
5. On "Achy Breaky Song", the song that Al is talking about is by what artist?

Answer: Billy Ray Cyrus

He's talking about the song he's making fun of, "Achy Breaky Heart"!
6. What is it that makes "Bedrock Anthem" unique from most of Al's parodies.

Answer: All of these are true

If you're a true Weird Al fan, you should know that on any of his albums, the biggest hit on the album is always the opening song, but the biggest hit on "Alapalooza" is "Bedrock Anthem", which is the third track. This song parodies two Red Hot Chilli Peppers songs, "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away".
7. On "Alapalooza", Al does a song called "Frank's 2000" TV". About how big would a 2000" TV be?

Answer: Bigger than an Imax screen

Believe it or not, the Imax screens are not even 2000 inches. There is really no such thing as a 2000" TV, and I have no idea where Al came up with that idea.
8. "Jurassic Park" is a parody on (in most people's opinions) the worst song ever written.

Answer: True

That's right. The majority of the world believes that "MacArthur Park" is the worst song ever written. It was a 7-minute song from the sixties written by Jimmy Webb and sung by Richard Harris. Strangely, this is my absolute favorite Weird Al song and one of my Top 10 songs.
9. Al's 1994 song, "Headline News" is a parody on what Crash Test Dummies song?

Answer: Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

Aside from Al's extremely rare songs, this was his only song from his first 20 years in the music business that was only released as a single and not on any album. The song can be found on "Permanant Record".
10. Who was it who got mad at Al for doing "Amish Paradise"?

Answer: The original artist of the song

"Amish Paradise" is a parody on Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise". When Al's record company asked for Coolio's permission to do the parody, he said, "No", but they did it anyway, and he couldn't stop him. Coolio said at the 1996 Grammy Awards, "Weird Al, I hope you make a lot of great songs, just stay away from me."
11. The band that did "Lump", which Al transformed into "Gump", also performed the theme song to what TV sit-com?

Answer: "The Drew Carey Show"

The Presidents of the United States of America, the guys who did "Lump", also did "Cleveland Rocks".
12. "Syndicated Inc." is a parody on "Misery". What band did the song, "Misery"?

Answer: Soul Asylum

The White Stripes have not yet formed when "Bad Hair Day" was released; even if they were, they probably wouldn't have made a song like this. I feel a little guilty for loving this song so much.
13. In "The Night Santa Went Crazy", Al mentions all the names of Santa's reindeer.

Answer: True

Including Rudolph.
14. "The Saga Begins" is about which "Star Wars" episode?

Answer: "The Phantom Menace"

There were so many people who freaked out when they saw Al's new look in the video to this song; his new hair-do was actually a wig.
15. Did the song, "Jerry Springer", have a music video?

Answer: No

It wouldn't have been a bad idea for Al to make a video for this song, though. Have you ever watched "Cow & Chicken"? Listen carefully to the two people arguing; they sound very similar to Cow and Chicken's parents.
16. "Running With Scissors" has an Offspring parody on which song?

Answer: "Pretty Fly for a White Guy"

The guy at the beginning of this song who says, "Veren zol fun dir a blintsa" sounds strangely like Kermit the Frog.
17. What celebrity makes a cameo in the video to "It's All About the Pentiums"?

Answer: Drew Carey

Before releasing this song, Al had to call Puff Daddy just to be absolutely sure that it was okay for him to do this parody on "It's All About the Benjamins". He didn't want any more rappers mad at him.
18. The only two foods Al mentions in "A Complicated Song" are pizza and cheese.

Answer: True

There are no food songs on "Poodle Hat", though I wish there was one.
19. "Couch Potato" is a parody on Eminem's "Lose Yourself". What was it about making this parody that happened for the very first time and was different from the other parodies he made?

Answer: He got permission to make the parody, but not the music video

I really think Al should go easy on the rappers, because they think that their songs are way too serious.
20. Does "Ode to a Superhero"'s refrain keep changing?

Answer: Yes

Like most of Al's parodies, the refrain of "Ode to a Superhero" has different lyrics each time it's played in the song.
