Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Emerson Lake and Palmer were associated with many bands before coming together. Which of the listed groups was not one with which any of the three played?

Answer: Jethro Tull

Keith Emerson was the keyboard player with Nice and he met Greg Lake, who was with King Crimson, when both bands played together at a couple of venues around 1969. They enlisted Carl Palmer from Atomic Rooster, and the rest, as they say, is history.
2. Which band member was born in Todmorden, Lancashire?

Answer: Keith Emerson

Emerson entered the world on November 2nd 1944. By the age of four he was already showing promise on the piano by playing show tunes by ear. When he was 14 he was playing in dance hall, at bingo sessions and for his aunt's ballet classes.
3. Early on there were rumours that Emerson and Lake discussed working with a legendary guitarist. That man was Jimi Hendrix. The link up never happened though because Hendrix died before anything could be finalised.

Answer: True

This came about when Emerson and Lake were auditioning drummers. One of their 'possibles' was Mitch Mitchell from the Jimi Hendrix Experience. A 'jam' session was to have taken place in August or September of 1970, but Hendrix died before anything could happen.
4. ELP began rehearsing in June 1970. They tried several tracks from King Crimson and Nice. Some were kept, some were dropped. They then worked on their first real ELP track. It featured on their debut album. Which was the very first song that was solely their own work?

Answer: Take A Pebble

Greg Lake developed the song from a line in a track he played whilst a member of The Shame. "Knife's Edge" was written by Emerson, Lake and one of their roadies, Robert Fraser. "Lucky Man" was the track that really launched the trio, and was written and sung by Lake. "America" was from "West Side Story", and although it never appeared on an album, it was performed live.
5. Before he joined the other two, Carl Palmer played drums for at least two other well known groups during the late sixties. Atomic Rooster was one. The other achieved a top 10 hit in the US and the UK in 1968. Which band was this?

Answer: The Crazy World of Arthur Brown

Palmer played with Arthur Brown on tour. He joined Emerson and Lake when he was just 20 years old. There was an immediate chemistry between the three of them, but Palmer didn't join immediately. He went back the next day to see if the chemistry still worked. It did.
6. ELP were known for their interpretations of classical music. One album though was virtually completely based on one particular composer's work. Which album was it?

Answer: Pictures At An Exhibition

'Pictures...' was based on a work of the same name by Mussorgsky. It was first performed on December 9 1970 at The Lyceum Theater, London. The album wasn't released until some time later.
7. Greg Lake said about their second studio album, "It's about the futility of conflict expressed in the context.. of soldiers and war. But it's broader than that. The words are about revolution that's gone, that has happened. Where has it got anybody? Nowhere. " Which album was it?

Answer: Tarkus

The quote in the question is taken from the Official ELP website and can be found in the 'biography' section. "Tarkus" is still considered by many to be their finest work.
8. In which year did ELP start their own recording label, to ensure "more artistic control"?

Answer: 1973

Manticore was started in 1973. Until this date they were signed to Atlantic Records in the US and to Island in the UK.
9. After their tour in 1974 the trio took a long break. Emerson took up flying and scuba diving, Lake and his wife took the time to have a daughter and Carl Palmer, and his then girlfriend, took a house in Spain where he took up karate. Nothing much was heard from them for a couple of years. They decided to do solo work for three years. When they returned, which album did they release?

Answer: Works, Volume l

"Works Vol. l" was almost unique. It was a double album that featured three sides of solo work, and one side of 'group' work.
10. The trio finally announced their breakup in December 1979. They were to reform, however, in 1986. The drummer that was brought in to replace Carl Palmer was already well known. Who was he?

Answer: Cozy Powell

Powell was recruited in 1985/86. At the time he was on tour with Whitesnake. Neil Peart was the drummer with Rush, Earl Palmer was a session musician and Ian Paice was, of course, with Deep Purple. ELP were back.
