Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What UK punk band started a tour of the USA on the 5th January 1978?

Answer: Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols tour started in Atlanta, Georgia. This was also the year that the band split up for the first time; they reformed for a short time in 1996 and 2003. In their home country of the UK, they never had a number one single ("God Save the Queen" reached number two being the highest).

But their album "Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols" did hit number one in November 1977.
2. In 1992 which Nirvana album reached number one on the Billboard 200 on 11th January 1992, in the USA?

Answer: Nevermind

"Nevermind" made number one on the Billboard 200, but in the UK it still made the top ten, reaching number seven. Only two years after this Kurt Cobain was dead. All of the albums listed are by Nirvana with the exception of "VS" which is by Pearl Jam. Of the other Nirvana albums "MTV Unplugged in New York" got to number one on both the UK and USA charts in 1994 and "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkan" was number one in the USA and number four in the UK in 1996.
3. In what year did Gibson patent the Flying V guitar?

Answer: 1958

It may (or may not) amaze you (it did me) that this guitar dates back to the late 1950s, being patented on the 6th January 1958. It seemed to be the guitar to have in the early 1980s for Heavy Metal, but people such as Dave Davis of the Kinks, Jimi Hendix and blues guitarist Albert King have all used them.
4. The late Ronnie Van Zant was born on 15th January 1948, but which band was he in?

Answer: Lynyrd Skynyrd

The late great Ronnie Van Zant died when the band's aircraft crashed on the 20th October 1977. But his music lives on with such classic tracks as "Freebird" and "Sweet Home Alabama". Of interest "Sweet Home Alabama" was Lynyrd Skynyrd's only single that charted in the UK, reaching number 21 in September 1976.
5. Which member of the band Kiss was born on 20th January 1952?

Answer: Paul Stanley

Paul Stanley one of the founder members of the legends Kiss was born in Queens, New York, USA. As well as his duties performing in Kiss he has maintained a solo career, including appearing as the Phantom, in The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto. I've only seen Kiss once here in the UK way back in Oct 1984, but the band that supported them went onto bigger and better things.

They were called Bon Jovi.
6. The band Faith No More played their first show in the UK on 22nd January 1988 but where in London was it?

Answer: Dingwall's

Faith No More's first UK show was at the Dingwall's at Camden Lock, London. The "Introduce Yourself Tour" was unsurprisingly in support of the their "Introduce Yourself" album which only reached number 88 in the UK album charts, and the single from it "We Care a Lot" did a little better by reaching number 53.
7. The 1960s group The Yardbirds played at the Hammersmith Odeon theatre on what unusual date in 1965?

Answer: 1st January

Not many bands play gigs on New Years day but this was a support slot to the Beatles, who did a series of shows called "Another Beatles Christmas Show" at the Odeon from 24th Dec '64 to 16th Jan '65. Eric Clapton left the Yardbirds in February 1965 to be replaced by Jeff Beck.
8. Here's another Kiss question. Kiss made their live debut on the 30th January 1973, but in which city?

Answer: New York

Way back in 1973 Kiss performed their first live gig at the Coventry Club in Queens, New York. The show was to between four and ten people and this depends on which version you read. So I guess only a hand full of people really know the truth.
9. Status Quo's first single "Paper Plane" charted in the UK in January 1973, but on which record label?

Answer: Vertigo

"Paper Plane" was the first single for the "Vertigo" label and entered the UK charts on 13th Jan 1973, but was actually released back in Nov 1972. And was a track taken from the 1972 "Piledriver" album. The B side was a track called "Softer Ride" which later appeared on the 1973 "Hello" album. Quo are still playing both tracks live from time to time, even after nearly 40 years.
10. Which one of Fleetwood Mac's albums reached number one in the UK album charts on 29th January 1978?

Answer: Rumours

The "Rumours" album is one of four albums that Fleetwood Mac has had at number one in the UK. It was in the charts for 477 weeks, but only one of them was at the top slot. In the USA it was at number one for 31 weeks and sold over 19 million copies.
