Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This band released the songs "Seek & Destroy" and "Nothing Else Matters." Apparently it really mattered to them that fans shared their music online. Who are they?

Answer: Metallica

Metallica are a heavy metal band that were formed in 1981 by Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield. In 1986 they released the album "Master of Puppets" which is often hailed as one of the best and most influential metal albums ever. "Seek & Destroy" was the first song the band recorded in a studio and was included on their debut album. "Nothing Else Matters" was released in 1992 and hit the top ten charts in a number of different countries. So far so good right? Well here's the not so great part.

In 2000, Metallica decided to go after the online music sharing service Napster, taking legal action against them.

This did not go over well with fans and they lost respect and were booed at various events. Drummer Lars Ulrich, who has been outspoken about this (and many other things), bears the brunt of the ire of fans.
2. This British band had hits with "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger." When it came to the two brothers in the band though, there was lots of anger. Who is this band?

Answer: Oasis

Oasis were formed in Manchester, England in 1991. Within a few short years they had two very successful albums, "Definitely Maybe" in 1994 and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" in 1995. The song "Wonderwall", from their second studio album, reached top ten in many countries and was the first song from the 1990s to reach one billion streams on Spotify. "Don't Look Back In Anger" reached number one in England and was the first Oasis song that was sung by Noel Gallagher, not regular vocalist Liam Gallagher.

The thing about Oasis is that band members and brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher notoriously do not get along. There have been public spats, no shows at scheduled events and other fights for years. In 2009 a concert was cancelled because Liam had laryngitis however Noel stated that Liam had a hangover. Liam sued his brother and demanded an apology, which he got. What he also got was the breakup of the band. Noel made a statement on the band's website announcing his departure. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did.
3. He drums and sings with the band The Boxmasters and recorded the song "Angelina" as a solo artist. I'd better not refer to this man as an actor though or he might get quite "Dark and Mad"; who is he?

Answer: Billy Bob Thornton

The 2001 song "Angelina" was a solo Thornton effort, co-written by Thornton about Angelina Jolie, whom he was married to at the time. The song "Dark and Mad" is from the same solo album as "Angelina." After a number of solo albums, he co-founded the rock band The Boxmasters.

In 2009 the band was touring in Canada and they did an interview which went viral. Thornton was downright rude and awkward. He took to task the fact that the host had mentioned in the band's introduction that Thornton was an actor.

He stated that he didn't want it mentioned at all, not even for context. He got into it with the host and the interview was so painful to watch. He then insulted Canadian audiences. At the end of the interview the band is asked to play and Thornton doesn't play, leaving his bandmates to play an instrumental version of one of their songs.

The whole painful video is available to watch online.
4. This singer and frontwoman of the band Hole released the song "Doll Parts" with them. It seems she's taken the whole "Rock Star" stereotype a bit too far with her outlandish behavior. What's this singer's name?

Answer: Courtney Love

Courtney Love co-founded Hole in 1989 with guitarist Eric Erlandson. The band was one of the most successful rock bands fronted by a woman commercially and were nominated for several Grammy Awards. The song "Doll Parts" was written in 1991 and Love has said that the song is about Kurt Cobain, whom she married in 1992.

The song "Rock Star" is an awesome, loud, angry take on girl groups. Love is known for her angry outbursts. In 2003 she was arrested at Heathrow Airport and banned from Virgin Airlines. That same year she was arrested for smashing windows at her boyfriend's home.

She's had substance abuse problems, lost custody of her child at one time and appeared on "Late Show With David Letterman" in 2004 and kept flashing her breasts at him.
5. Well known for their punk, anarchistic style, they released the controversial song "God Save the Queen" during Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee. Who is this band?

Answer: Sex Pistols

The infamous Sex Pistols had a short but very tumultuous and influential career. They released the song "God Save the Queen" in 1977 which was the same year as Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee. With lyrics like "she ain't no human being" the song was banned from every British radio station at the time.

In 1977 when the band signed to A&M Records, they made a show of signing outside of Buckingham Palace and then proceeded to cause mayhem at the A&M Offices. In June of that year they performed on a private boat on the River Thames, mocking the Queen's river procession that was planned.

They caused trouble wherever they went, showing no regard or respect for anyone and doing pretty much what they pleased. They caused an uproar over an interview on Thames Television with Bill Grundy, swearing and arguing with the host (who was later fired).

The band broke up in 1978.
6. I'm sure this Canadian singer is "Sorry" for the run-ins with the law he's had. After being charged with vandalism perhaps he asked the officer "What Do You Mean?" I'm under arrest? Who is this singer?

Answer: Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber found success and fame at a very early age. He released the song "Sorry" in 2015 and it hit number one in the United States and Canada. The song "What Do You Mean?" was another big success, hitting number one in several countries. Fame at such a young age has its price and Bieber grew up in front of the world, with all the highs and lows and challenges that comes with that (and being filthy rich too!).

He's been arrested for DUI on more than one occasion and for vandalism (throwing eggs at a neighbour's house).

In 2014 he got into a fight with the driver of a minivan near his hometown of Stratford, Ontario. He drew criticism for writing a note in the guestbook at the Anne Frank House hoping that Anne Frank would've been a fan. His treatment of his fans hasn't been all great and he wrote quite a rant on social media to his fans and what he expects from them.

He's stormed off stage and he's cancelled meet and greets with his fans too. Pretty mean for a nice Canadian boy!
7. This singer's version of "All I Want For Christmas" is a seasonal favorite. She's sometimes called the 'Queen of Shade' though for being not particularly complimentary to fellow singers and has a reputation as an absolute diva. Who is she?

Answer: Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is an amazing singer and true diva. With her five-octave vocal range and use of whistle tones, she has set herself apart. Every Christmas, her version of "All I Want For Christmas" fills the airwaves. Her first five singles reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and she was the first artist ever to achieve this. So you'd think she'd be confident in her abilities and place in the entertainment world.

Her responses to questions about other artists makes me doubt that. In a video that went viral, she was asked in a German TV interview about singer Jennifer Lopez and replied "I don't know her." She was given the name 'Queen of Shade' because of that response as people wondered why she felt the need to disrespect a fellow diva with such a response.

There are so many examples of Mariah's unpleasant treatment of others. She joined "Carpool Karoake" with James Corden and refused to sing. She was performing on "Good Morning America" and called out a backup singer for singing her part.

She allegedly stormed out of President Obama's inauguration ceremony because she wasn't sitting with the President and First Lady. And those are just a few examples.
8. "Welcome to the Jungle" might describe a wild night out with this frontman. He's been arrested numerous times and involved in all kinds of legal trouble. Have a little "Patience" and think of this man's name.

Answer: Axl Rose

Axl Rose is the lead singer of the band Guns n Roses and with them has been very successful. "Welcome to the Jungle" was the second single off their debut album and was named the best hard rock song of all time in 2009 by VH1. "Patience" is a ballad that reached number four for the band in the United States. Axl Rose though has a reputation for being a troublemaker.

He was arrested over twenty times as a teenager. When he rose to stardom, his troubles continued. He assaulted a security guard during one of his shows, threatened a guard at an airport who was looking through his bags and hit his next door neighbour in the head with a wine bottle when she complained about his constant loud music. Sounds like a great neighbour.

In 2006 Axl Rose was arguing with a woman in a hotel when a security guard intervened and Axl bit him in the leg.

In 1991 the band was on stage when a fan was taking photos and Axl did not like that so he grabbed the camera, assaulted the fan and started a riot when he stormed off stage.
9. This rapper had hits with "Get Me Home" and "I'll Be." A word of advice - do not mess with her nails. Who is she?

Answer: Foxy Brown

Foxy Brown's debut album "Ill Na Na" went Platinum and spawned the hits "Get Me Home" and "I'll Be". Her second studio album "Chyna Doll" debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. She is known for being raunchy, for taking risks, and for being extremely talented. Unfortunately her talent seems to take a backseat to her bad attitude.

In 2004 she was getting her nails done in New York City and got into a fight with two manicurists who apparently gave her the pedicure she wanted but forgot her manicure.

She's served time in jail and gotten into altercations with fellow prisoners and been abusive toward guards. In a 2010 dispute with a neighbour, she threw her phone at her and mooned her. Another not so nice neighbour from the music world!
10. She released the songs "Mean" and "Shake It Off", both which could've been about Kanye West after he interrupted one of her award acceptance speeches. She's not the unpleasant one in this question; who is this singing sweetheart?

Answer: Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is not the unpleasant one in this situation but the title of the quiz does come from her song "Mean" so it seemed apropos to include her. She does have a link to a very unpleasant situation though. In 2009 Swift was on stage in the middle of accepting an MTV Video Award when Kanye West took the microphone from her and famously told her that he will let her finish but that Beyonce had "one of the best videos of all time." He was booed as Swift stood looking awkward and shocked.

The song "Mean", released in 2010 is allegedly not about West but generally about people who bully and belittle others. Swift won several awards for that song.

She won more awards for the song "Shake It Off" including a BMI Pop Award and an iHeart Radio Music Award.
