Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with our oldest golden oldie, Louis Armstrong. He was 67 when he topped the UK charts in 1968 with what song?

Answer: What a Wonderful World

Louis Armstrong was probably the most influential jazz musician of all time. His career began in the 1920's, so it's all the more remarkable that he took the No. 1 spot in 1968, right in the middle of the youth explosion in music. He remained there for four weeks.
2. In 1999 Cliff Richard reached No. 1 with 'Millennium Prayer'. This was the 'Lord's Prayer' set to the music of which perennial song?

Answer: Auld Lang Syne

On release it entered the charts at No. 2, and a week later it was at No. 1, where it stayed for 3 weeks. Such was its success that Cliff was able to hand over one million pounds to Childrens Promise, a charity serving a wide range of children's charities. The money came from the single and a New Year's Eve concert.
3. Her first UK No. 1 was in 1965 when she was part of a duo. Since then her career has gone from strength to strength. In 1998 she topped the UK charts with the song 'Believe'. Who is she?

Answer: Cher

Her 1965 song was, of course, 'I Got You Babe' which she sang with Sonny Bono. Strangely, Sonny and Cher were far better known in the UK at the start of their career than in the USA. It was Mick Jagger who suggested that they should try their luck in the UK, and what a good bit of advice that turned out to be- so much so that when they returned to the USA they were thought to be part of the 'British pop invasion'.
4. Elton John has held the No. 1 spot before, but in the year 2002 he made it to No. 1 again, aged 55 years, accompanying which boy band?

Answer: Blue

The song was 'Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word'. It was only at the top spot for one week.
5. Although not a singer, Clive Dunn reached No. 1 in 1971 when he was 51 years old. What was the song?

Answer: Grandad

Clive Dunn was Corporal Jones in 'Dad's Army'. For three weeks Clive Dunn was top of the pops or even top of the grandpops.
6. Frank Sinatra was 51 in 1967 when he recorded which song with his daughter Nancy?

Answer: Something Stupid

Only two weeks at the top. This song was recently recorded by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman on Robbie Williams' album 'Swing When You're Winning'.
7. Isaac Hayes reached No. 1 in 1999. What was his character's name in the cartoon series 'South Park'?

Answer: Chef

Isaac Hayes was 55 years old and better known for composing the title tune to the movie 'Shaft', but in 1997 he was asked to voice the character Chef in 'South Park'. Originally it was only to be for one episode but Chef soon turned into a recurring character. In 1999 his recording of 'Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S Ilove you)' spent one week at No. 1. He was 58 years old.
8. Charles Aznavour was 50 when he spent four weeks at No. 1 with the song 'She'. It was used in the film 'Notting Hill', but who was it sung by?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Charles Aznavour was 50 when 'She' reached No. 1. In his career he has written over 600 songs and sold 100 million records, and has been inducted into the American Hall of Fame.
9. Although primarily an actor, Telly Savalas had a No. 1 hit in 1975. How old was he when he topped the UK charts with the song 'If'?

Answer: 53

Telly Savalas was probably best known for his portrayal of Kojak, a New York police detective with a taste for lollipops. He once said 'I can only make mistakes by pretending to be a great singer'. In 1975 he made no pretence and took his song to the top of the charts by opting to speak the lyrics rather than sing them.
10. In 2003, 55-year-old Oliver Cheatham reached No. 1 with a remix of one of his 1983 songs. It was used in a TV commercial, but what product was it used to advertise?

Answer: deodorant

Oliver Cheatham was born in 1948, which means he qualifies for this quiz. The song 'Make Luv' was remixed by Room 5. When Oliver first recorded it in 1983 the title was 'Get Down Saturday Night'; then it got no higher position thirty. The advert not only gave Oliver Cheatham a No. 1, it also launched a new and somewhat silly dance for clubbers to imitate.
