Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Welsh indiepop band released the 2007 single 'You! Me! Dancing!', which featured in a 2010 Budweiser advert and from which this quiz takes its title?

Answer: Los Campesinos!

'You! Me! Dancing!' begins with a long, quiet intro before exploding into the band's trademark noisy indiepop. The song first appeared on the band's EP 'Sticking Fingers Into Sockets' and a slightly different version of the track featured on their debut album 'Hold On Now, Youngster'. Los Campesinos! formed in 2006 when the band members were all students at Cardiff University, though none of the members were actually Welsh.

The band is fronted by lead singer and main songwriter Gareth Campesinos.

They originally had a much more twee sound, though, as their career has progressed, their musical style has hardened somewhat. They have released a series of acclaimed albums since 2007 and continue to make clever and inventive music and to put on exciting live shows.
2. Which English new wave star had a solo hit in 1981 with 'Dancing With Myself', a song which he had previously recorded with his former band Generation X?

Answer: Billy Idol

Billy Idol was born William Broad in Middlesex in 1955 and began his music career with the punk band Chelsea. After Chelsea split up, Idol and his band mate Tony James went on to form Generation X who enjoyed some success in their native UK. In 1981 Idol moved to New York to pursue his solo career and met with quick success.

His videos received extensive airplay on the relatively new MTV and many of his songs, such as 'Dancing with Myself', 'Mony Mony', 'White Wedding', 'Eyes Without A Face' and 'Rebel Yell', have remained popular ever since. Idol's solo version of 'Dancing with Myself' is notably softer than the version he recorded with Generation X.
3. Which indiepop band, fronted by Elizabeth Morris, released the 2009 single 'Henry Rollins Don't Dance'?

Answer: Allo Darlin'

Australian-born performer Elizabeth Morris began Allo Darlin' as a solo project before recruiting a full band to record her songs and to perform live. The band have released three albums on cult indie label Fortuna Pop! and have gathered a cult following amongst indiepop fans. Prior to the growth in Allo Darlin's popularity Elizabeth Morris had been a member of indiepop band Tender Trap which featured twee pop queen Amelia Fletcher.

Henry Rollins was the lead singer of hardcore punk band Black Flag.

In 'Henry Rollins Don't Dance' the singer tries to persuade her Fugazi and Black Flag loving boyfriend to watch 'Dirty Dancing' or 'Grease' in the hope of persuading him to dance with her but to no avail.
4. Which Canadian new wave band are best known for their 1983 hit single 'The Safety Dance'?

Answer: Men Without Hats

'The Safety Dance' enjoyed considerable success in a number of countries, reaching the top ten of the UK and US singles charts. The band's lead singer, Ivan Doroschuk, claims he was inspired to write the song after being kicked out of a night club for pogo dancing. Men Without Hats formed in Montreal in 1977 and continued to perform together until 1992.

Although they would never again achieve the chart success of 'The Safety Dance', 'Pop Goes the World', released in 1986, became a hit in Canada, Sweden and Austria.
5. Which proto-punk icon included the track 'I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar' on his 1992 album 'I, Jonathan'?

Answer: Jonathan Richman

In 1969 the teenage Jonathan Richman moved to New York to be near his idols The Velvet Underground. There he formed the Modern Lovers who would go on to become one of the earliest and most influential proto-punk bands of the early 1970s. The Modern Lovers were responsible for recording the seminal early punk classic 'Roadrunner'.

In 1975 Richman embarked on a solo career and has continued to release records and to play concerts all over the world ever since. 'I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar' is a delightful track in which Richman describes being stuck in a pretentious club where nobody is dancing properly and everybody is staring at him until he is persuaded to visit a lesbian bar where he can be himself and have fun.
6. Which legendary British singer and songwriter featured the track 'Heads We're Dancing' on her 1989 album 'The Sensual World'?

Answer: Kate Bush

In my opinion Kate Bush is probably the greatest pop star that Britain has ever produced. I could fill pages praising her work so I will try and keep it short here! Kate Bush released her first album 'The Kick Inside' in 1978 when she was still a teenager. 'The Kick Inside' features Bush's only UK number one single 'Wuthering Heights'. Bush followed her debut up with 'Lionheart', and, while neither album can compare to her subsequent work, they both have a great deal of charm and feature many wonderful songs, particularly 'The Kick Inside' from the album of the same name.

It was with 1980's 'Never For Ever' that I feel Kate Bush really came into her own. By this time she had increasingly taken control of all aspects of her music, including production, and was able to have a greater say on how it sounded.

This is particularly evident on the two albums I consider to be her masterpieces, 1982's 'The Dreaming' and 1985's 'Hounds of Love', both of which were almost entirely produced by Bush herself. 'The Sensual World', on which 'Heads We're Dancing' features, is more personal and intimate than much of Bush's earlier work.
7. Which British synthpop duo had a hit in 1988 with the single 'Domino Dancing'?

Answer: Pet Shop Boys

Pet Shop Boys formed in 1981 and comprised Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Neil Tennant had worked on the pop music magazine 'Smash Hits' before embarking on his own music career. During their long and successful career the duo have notched up dozens of hit singles in the UK, including four number ones, the first of which, 'West End Girls', was also a chart-topper in the USA and numerous other countries. 'The Guinness Book Of Records' names Pet Shop Boys as the best-selling duo in UK chart history. Neil Tennant's distinctive vocals are instantly recognisable and the duo's brand of elegant, intelligent and unashamedly catchy pop continues to draw in large audiences. 'Domino Dancing' was taken from the band's 1988 hit album 'Introspective', and, while it reached the top ten in the UK and the top twenty in the USA, it was considered something of a commercial flop, ending the band's impressive run of number one singles in the UK and being their last single to place in the US Billboard top sixty.
8. Which Sheffield-based indiepop band, fronted by Emma Kupa, included the song 'Dancing' on their 2010 debut album 'The Noyelle Beat'?

Answer: Standard Fare

Although Standard Fare formed in 2005, they did not release their debut album until 2010. The band had long been live favourites, playing at numerous music festivals and shows all over the UK and so expectations of their debut album were high. 'The Noyelle Beat' was released to extensive critical acclaim. Standard Fare had a spiky, punky style of indiepop which made them an exciting band to see live and which translated well to their recordings.

The band released their second album, 'Out of Sight, Out of Town', in 2011 but split in 2013 with Emma Kupa going on to record and release solo records as well as playing with her new band, Mammoth Penguins.
9. Which American new wave band from Athens in Georgia, who are best known for the singles 'Love Shack', 'Roam' and 'Rock Lobster', included the characteristically quirky track 'Dance This Mess Around' on their eponymous 1979 debut album?

Answer: The B-52's

The band, who were known as The B-52's before they dropped the extraneous apostrophe in 2008, formed in Athens, Georgia in 1976 when siblings Cindy and Ricky Wilson met fellow future band members Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson and Keith Strickland and bonded over a love of all things kitsch.

The band took their name from that of a particular type of beehive hair-do which in turn took its name from its resemblance to the nose cone of the B-52 aircraft. Their debut single, 'Rock Lobster', has become a cult classic and the band's self-titled debut album, released in 1979, has regularly appeared on lists of best albums of all time in numerous publications in the years since its release.

The band went on to record a number of excellent albums and to achieve worldwide fame with their 1989 smash hit single 'Love Shack'.

The B-52's are instantly recognisable thanks to Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson's unique vocal talents, the trademark call and response lyrical delivery and their joyously exuberant sound. Tragically the band's talented and innovative guitarist Ricky Wilson died from complications of AIDS in 1985 and the heartbroken band took a hiatus before re-emerging in 1989 with the superb 'Cosmic Thing' album. If you thought there was no more to The B-52's than the, admittedly brilliant, 'Love Shack' then I would highly recommend checking out their other exhilarating, life-affirming work, I promise you won't regret it!
10. What is the name of the Brighton-based girl group who formed in 2003 and included the song 'It Hurts to See You Dance So Well' on their debut album, though they are probably best known for their UK top forty hit single 'Pull Shapes'?

Answer: The Pipettes

The Pipettes were inspired by classic 1960s girl groups and specialised in infectiously catchy dancefloor fillers. The band's debut album, 'We Are the Pipettes', named after the band's theme song, was released in 2006 and produced four singles two of which, 'Pull Shapes' and 'Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me', scored UK top forty hits for the band. Following the release of 'We Are the Pipettes' the band experienced a number of line-up changes meaning that they did not release their sophomore album, 'Earth Vs.

The Pipettes', until 2010.
