Though he did not play a major role in the uprising Havel was a supporter of The Prague Spring in 1968. In the late 1970s he was imprisoned for his dissident writings, charged with "subversion of the republic". In 1989 he was elected the last President of Czechoslovakia, a position he held until it was dissolved at the end of 1992 (Czech Republic and Slovakia).

He was then the first president of the Czech Republic, at the start of 1993.
