Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The rules that pirates lived by while on ship were known as?

Answer: Articles

Every pirate ship had its own articles; some were common to all ships such as no women allowed on ship, punishment for stealing, running away, or keeping secrets was death, and the crew shared the bounty equally. Everyone had to follow the rules, even the captain.
2. After being hired as a privateer to protect English ships, this man became a pirate. What name did he go by?

Answer: William Kidd

William Kidd was a privateer who was hired to protect English ships while they were in the Caribbean. He and his crew did their job until his crew got tired of giving away the treasures they confiscated from enemy ships. During a voyage in 1698, William Kidd and his crew attacked an Indian ship called the Quedagh Merchant coming around the tip of India. Kidd and his men boarded the ship and stole their treasure along with the ship. William Kidd was no longer a privateer; he was a pirate. On his way to Boston with his new ship and crew, William Kidd was arrested and sent back to England.

He was hanged for piracy and his body was left in a cage in exhibition.
3. Who was known as Queen Elizabeth I's first Sea Dog?

Answer: Francis Drake

5. What did the pirates call the money and goods they stole from ships?

Answer: Booty

The best booty a pirate could steal was gold, although they often stole food, drink, and clothing. Doubloons and pieces of eight (silver coins) were an exceptionally good booty for a pirate to steal from a ship. Very few trading ships carried gold. A pirate would even steal entire ships, leaving the crew of that ship with two options: become a member of the crew or die. Blackbeard's ship, Queen Anne's Revenge, was formerly a French trading ship.
6. Jolly Roger was the nickname of what on a pirate's ship?

Answer: Flag

The first pirate flags were red in color. Each pirate could have a different jolly roger.

He joined the English navy as a buccaneer. In the mid-1600's Henry Morgan was appointed deputy governor of Jamaica by King Charles II. In 1681, he was removed as deputy governor after his relationship with the king went downhill.
10. Pirates who attacked Spanish ships were given what name by cooking their food on grills called boucans?

Answer: Buccaneers

Buccaneers were outlaws from England, The Netherlands and France. In the 1600's, these pirates settled on islands in the Caribbean. Native Americans on the island taught the pirates how to grill pig meat and beef on grills called boucans. When the buccaneers were forced out of the Caribbean islands, they took to the seas.
