Lew Hoad (1934-1994) was an Australian tennis player who won in the space of four years, 13 Grand Slam titles (4 x singles, 8 x doubles and one mixed doubles). In 1956 he won the singles titles of Australia, France, Wimbledon and was beaten in the final of the US singles by his friend and fellow Australian, Ken Rosewall. Lew turned professional in 1957 and made a comeback to the international circuit when tennis became open in 1967 but his best years were behind him.

He wrote novels and biographies, however, his bestselling novel was "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" (1880). In 1925 the novel was adapted into a silent movie, however, in 1959 the novel was readapted into the blockbuster movie "Ben-Hur" featuring Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins and Stephen Boyd. The movie won eleven Academy Awards having been nominated for twelve.

Lou Gehrig (1903-1941) was an American baseball player who played first base for the New York Yankees from 1923-1939. During his career he was six times a World Series Champion and finished with 493 home runs. Due to his durability (2,130 consecutive games) and hitting he gained the nickname "the Iron Horse".
In one MLB game in June 1932 he hit four home runs against the Philadelphia Athletics, being the first player in the 20th century to achieve this feat. In 1939 he was diagnosed with "amyotrophic lateral scierosis" (ALS), which is also known as "motor neurons disease"(MND).
The condition is also known as "Lou Gehrig's disease".
