1. 1086 - "The Domesday" book is commissioned.

Answer: William I

"The Domesday" book was a survey of all the landowners and landholdings in England. It enabled the crown to calculate taxes and remains a very useful historical source.
2. 1120 - William Aethling died in the White Ship disaster.

Answer: Henry I

Henry's only son William's death, was disastrous for the nation, which descended into civil war after Henry's death in 1135.
3. 1628 - George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, was assassinated.

Answer: Charles I

Buckingham was murdered by a fanatic, after a series of disastrous campaigns against the French in support of the Huguenots. Charles I began his 'personal' rule soon afterwards.
4. 1381 - The Peasants' Revolt.

Answer: Richard II

Led by Wat Tyler, the revolt concentrated in the south east of England. Richard famously went out into Smithfield and dispersed the crowds with reassuring words. He later rounded up and executed the leaders.

Answer: Henry II

Henry and Thomas had been close friends before Thomas became Archbishop.
6. 1743 - The last English King to lead his troops into battle did so at Dettingen.

Answer: George II

It was a British victory! Handel wrote the "Dettingen Te Deum" to commemorate the victory.

His identity remains a mystery to this day.
