Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of George I's wife?

Answer: Sophia Dorothea

Sophia Dorothea was born in 1666 the only child of George William, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg by his long-term mistress, Eleonore whom George eventually married. She is best remembered for her affair with Philip von Königsmarck that led to her being imprisoned in Castle of Ahlden for the last thirty years of her life.
2. On her deathbed King George II's wife, Queen Caroline, was said to be happy not to see whose face again?

Answer: Her son Frederick

When Frederick learned that his parents would be present at the birth of his first child he packed up himself and his in labor wife away.
He was devoted to his wife after a fight with his parents and together with their children they left for the country since he was effectively banished from court.
3. What was the disease that George III reportedly suffered from?

Answer: Porphyria

He suffered from a mental illness, which was possibly a symptom of the genetic disease, porphyria.
A study of samples of the King's hair published in 2005 revealed high levels of arsenic, a possible trigger for the disease.
The source of the arsenic is not known, but it could have been a component of medicines or cosmetics.
4. George IV had two wives; one official and one never recognized. What were their names?

Answer: Maria and Caroline

The marriage with Maria Fiztzherbert was considered invalid under the Royal Marriages Act 1772 because it had not been approved by King George III and the Privy Council.
His marriage to Caroline of Brunswick was a disaster from the word go. George was drunk at the wedding and Caroline wasn't exactly the cleanest person. After at least three consummations of their marriage they separated never to see each other again.
The result of one of these consummations was their only child Charlotte.
5. William IV announced that he hoped to live past Victoria's eighteenth birthday. At what event was this announcement made?

Answer: His Birthday

He was heard to have said, "I trust to God that my life may be spared for nine months longer." He achieved his goal by a month. His fear was that, should he die before Victoria came of age, a regency would place the throne "...in the hands of a person now near me, who is surrounded by evil advisers." He was referring to The Duchess of Kent and Sir John Conroy.
6. What was the first thing Victoria did upon becoming Queen?

Answer: Moved her mother's bed away from hers

Due to Sir John Conroy's influence the new Queen Victoria relegated the Duchess to separate accommodation, away from her own. Victoria came to associate her mother with Conroy's schemes since he ignored her and insulted her on numerous occasions.
7. Edward VII suffered some ailments during his time as Prince of Wales but what illness caused him to have an operation?

Answer: Appendicitis

Edward's coronation had originally been scheduled for 26 June, but two days before on 24 June, he was diagnosed with appendicitis.
Thanks to developments in anesthesia and antisepsis in the preceding 50 years, he underwent a life-saving operation.
8. In which war did George II lead his troops into battle?

Answer: War of the Austrian Succession

George II was the last British monarch to lead his troops into battle at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. George commanded his troops in alliance with those of Hanover and Austria against the French army. The battle was part of the War of the Austrian Succession.

The trigger for the war was the succession to the Habsburg throne of Marie-Therese of Austria. The Prussian and French governments challenged the legitimacy of a female heir and used it as a pretext to declare war. Britain allied with the Habsburg empire and were joined by the Dutch Republic and Russia among other belligerents.
The Seven Years' War was a conflict major war that lasted from 1756 until 1763 and was often described as a world war due to the involvement of a large number of the major European powers of the period; Prussia; the United Kingdom; Portugal; France; Habsburg Monarchy; Russian Empire; Spain; and Sweden.
The armies in the conflict were under the commands of royals like; Frederick II, Emperor of Prussia; Empress Maria Theresa, Archduchess of Austria; and Empress Elizabeth of Russia among others.
The war came to an end with the signing of two treaties in 1763. The Treaty of Hubertusburg ended the war between Prussia, Austria and Saxony and the Treaty of Paris ended the hostilities between the UK, France and Spain.
9. In what year did George IV become Prince Regent?

Answer: 1811

Following George III's permanent descent into madness, the Regency Act of 1811 was passed by the UK parliament. The Prince of Wales then became Prince Regent until his ascension to the throne in 1820.
10. How many of Victoria's nine children died before she did?

Answer: Three
