Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The public first saw me at age three in "The Red-Haired Alibi"(1932), a forgettable film. But I went on to become the most successful and popular child star of all time. Later, I was to have children's oriented television show of dramatized fairy tales. After my acting days were over, I became the United States ambassador to Ghana and later ambassador to Czechoslovakia. Do you remember my name?

Answer: Shirley Temple

For three years, from 1936 to 1938, she was the biggest box office draw. "Shirley Temple's Storybook" lasted only one year on television (1958) but was a great improvement of the tired cartoons aimed at children. She worked for four presidents: Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Bush.

After leaving the diplomatic service she became a consultant to Stanford University's Institute on International Affairs.
2. I was born in 1806. I was largely home taught and by the age of three had learned Greek. By ten I had mastered all the elements of a classical education. At a young age I began to produce scholarly papers on logic and was teaching younger children. Many consider me to be the leading philosopher of the 19th century. What is my name?

Answer: John Stuart Mill

Summarizing Mill's works is impossible in a few words as his interests and writings were vast and wide-ranging. Liberty was a major theme, how public and private issues interacted, utilitarianism, liberalism, and feminism touch only a few.
3. I began to play golf at the age of four. By ten I became the youngest player to qualify for the United States Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. In 2006 "Time Magazine" named me as "1 of 100 people to shape our world". At sixteen I was one of the youngest players to be admitted to the LPGA. Do you know me?

Answer: Michelle Wie

Wie was born in Hawaii of Korean ancestry. She played in several golf tournaments as a sponsor's exemption due to her age. Her ambition has been to play in men's tournaments. Wie has been accompanied by an enormous amount of hype wherever she appeared.
4. I was an avid reader as a child and wrote a play called "Avadar" based on the "Iliad" at age twelve. In spite of debilitating bone disease, I became one of the most celebrated of English poets of my time and was known as 'The Wicked Wasp of Twickenham'. Who am I that made the heroic couplet my mode of poetry?

Answer: Alexander Pope

After Shakespeare and Tennyson, Pope has the most quotes in the "Oxford Dictionary of Quotations". Here are just a few examples:

"A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring."

"An honest man's the noblest work of God."

"Education forms the common mind. Just as the twig is bent, the tree's inclined."

"Gentle dullness ever loves a joke."

"Praise undeserved, is satire in disguise."

"To err is human; to forgive, divine."

"So vast is art, so narrow human wit."

And the beat goes on (Sonny and Cher).
5. In the film "Magnolia" (1999) a sub-plot deals with a former television 'quiz kid' who as an adult is a basket case of a human being. What actor played the role of quiz kid Donnie Smith as an adult?

Answer: William H. Macy

The film drew critical acclaim for its ensemble actors but only Tom Cruise won an Oscar nomination. Macy is often cast as the 'everyman' as he seems like a 'typical' guy. Macy has a long list of character acting appearances in addition to "Magnolia". He was the car salesman in "Fargo" (1996), the college professor in "Oleanna" (1995), the jealous husband in "Boogie Nights" (1997), and the gambler in "The Cooler" (2003).
6. I was born in 1623 and wrote a scientific paper on vibrating bodies at age nine. I produced my first mathematical proof at eleven and a theorem by sixteen. I am famous for many other contributions in mathematics, philosophy, physics, and religion. What is my name?

Answer: Blaise Pascal

Perhaps Pascal's greatest contribution to modern society was his theory on probability. His concept of expected value has been the foundation of much computational work including the development of artificial intelligence through machine learning.
7. I came from a poor family in Georgia. I was blessed with a great singing voice and began to sing for the public when I was six. After my father died when I was ten, my singing made me the principle breadwinner of the family.I was called "Little Miss Dynamite". Do you remember me? If not, "I'm Sorry".

Answer: Brenda Lee

"I'm Sorry" is her signature song. During the holiday season you are sure to hear her "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree". Lee has been elected to both the country music and rock and roll Halls of Fame. During her fifty plus years of singing, performing, and recording she has had many chart hits.
8. In my seventeen years on earth, I was a popular contributor to local periodicals. I got into a great deal of trouble when I wrote poems in an archaic style and attributed them to Thomas Rowley, a fifteenth century poet. As a matter of fact I could fool experts sometimes with my ability to imitate many poet's styles. My genius was not fully appreciated until after my death. Do you remember my name?

Answer: Thomas Chatterton

Chatterton died from poisoning by self-administered arsenic. It was not clear if was a suicide attempt or an overdose of a venereal disease potion. Probably because of his youth, he felt that his poetry would not be taken seriously so he assumed the name of a dead poet thinking that the poems would be more acceptable. Scholars were often fooled by Chatterton's genius and it was after his death that literary honors came to him. As an example, here is a brief quote from one of his poems:

"Onn Oure Ladies Chyrche"

As onn a hylle one eve sittynge,
At oure Ladie's Chyrche mouche wonderynge,
The counynge handieworke so fyne,
Han well nighe dazeled mine eyne;
Quod I; some counynge fairie hande
Yreer'd this chapelle in this lande;
Full well I wote so fine a syghte
Was ne yreer'd of mortall wighte.
Quod Trouthe; thou lackest knowlachynge;
Thou forsoth ne wotteth of the thynge.

Does this remind anyone of painful days dealing with Middle English and the poems of Chaucer?
9. I was born to a couple of vaudevillians who noticed my sense of rhythm banging spoons and put me in their act as a drummer at age two. By the time I was eleven, I had my own band. I was completely self taught as a drummer as I felt that lessons would interfere with my creativity. Many consider me to be the best drummer of all time and I would agree with that. What was my name?

Answer: Buddy Rich

Rich worked mainly with his own band but he also played with the most popular big bands of his time including Bunny Berigan, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, and Les Brown to name a few. He was a hard task-master with his musicians, often threatening to fire people but had too much respect for talented musicians that he seldom followed through. Rich always claimed that he never practiced but played only when performing.

He was a frequent talk show guest both in the US and UK as his aggressive style and honesty captivated audiences.
10. When I was thirteen I was described as brilliant at the game of chess. By age fourteen I had already played in eight National Championships. At fifteen I became the youngest Grand Champion. In 1972 the eyes of the world focused on Reykjavik, Iceland as I and Boris Spassky battled for the World Chess Championship. My victory was compared to winning the 'cold war' on a chess board. What is my name?

Answer: Bobby Fischer

Fischer became reclusive and eccentric after his defeat of Spassky. He broke with his church, he made anti-Semitic statements, became fiercely anti-American. He wandered from country to country as his US passport was revoked. Near the end of his life he was granted asylum and citizenship in Iceland where he died in 2008.
