Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1930s and 40s he was often called "The King of Hollywood". She was as well known as him, specialising in comedy roles. She died tragically young in a plane crash. Which couple does this describe?

Answer: Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

In the mid 1930s Clark Gable was the top Hollywood male star. He worked with all the great and well known actresses of the day including Joan Crawford, Ava Gardner and Jean Harlow. His most famous role is probably that of Rhett Butler in "Gone With the Wind" opposite Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara.

He first met Carole Lombard when filming the 1932 film "No Man of Her Own". She was married to William Powell at the time. In 1936 they started an affair, and in 1939 Clark Gable divorced his then wife, Ria Langham, and they married.

In 1941 Carole Lombard attended a war bond rally in her home state of Indiana. On the return journey the plane crashed into a mountain only about 20 minutes after take off and everyone on board was killed. Clark Gable was devastated by her death, and even though he married twice more, when he died he chose to be buried beside Carole in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
2. This was a legendary Hollywood love affair. They had a relationship for over 30 years, yet he would not divorce his wife and marry her. She nursed him through his last illness, but did not attend his funeral. Which lovers were these?

Answer: Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn

Spencer Tracy was 23 when he married his wife, Louise. Their first child was born deaf, and she devoted all her time to him, and trying to find a cure. Soon Tracy was having affairs with various leading ladies, including Ingrid Bergman and Joan Crawford.

He first met Katharine Hepburn when they were cast together in "Woman of the Year" (1942) and they began a love affair that lasted until his death. A devout Catholic, he would not divorce his wife, and together they founded the John Tracy Clinic for deaf children. Katharine Hepburn married once, in 1928.

The marriage, to Ludow Ogeden Smith, ended in 1934 with a quickie divorce in Mexico. She did not attend Spencer Tracy's funeral out of respect for his wife and children.
3. He was a wise biblical king. She was the queen of a foreign land who came to seduce and betray him but fell in love instead. Can you name the biblical couple as portrayed in the 1959 film "Solomon and Sheba", please?

Answer: Solomon and Sheba

"Solomon and Sheba" is a 1959 film starring Yul Brynner and Gina Lollobrigida. Under Solomon Israel was peaceful and rich. Enemies however, chiefly Egypt, wanted to undermine Solomon. The Queen of Sheba formed an alliance with Egypt and said she would seduce Solomon and bring pagan worship to Israel. She arrived on a state visit and did indeed seduce Solomon. However, she then fell in love with him. A coup was then planned by Solomon's brother, Adonijah, who defeated Solomon's army and planned to make himself king. He orders the Queen of Sheba to be stoned to death. Solomon meanwhile has regrouped and defeated the Egyptian army chasing him. He arrived in time to save Sheba from death, and his prayers for her wounds to be healed are answered. He resumes the throne and she returns home, pregnant by Solomon.

The film version is pure Hollywood and bears little relationship to the story as told in the Bible.

Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837. In 1840 she married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who was her first cousin. Albert died in 1861 of typhoid. Victoria went into seclusion, and after that wore black for the rest of her life, and was rarely seen in public.

They became lovers almost immediately. She came to rely on him as her right hand man, making him a Prince. He, however, wanted more power, and soon she realised she had to let him go. He governed various provinces on her behalf, always keeping in close contact with her. Eventually he ended up in the Crimea, where he built the Black Sea fleet and cities such as Sebastopol and also founded Odessa (in Ukraine).

He and Catherine still slept together whenever he was in St. Petersburg, and he personally selected his replacement in her bed.

He was unwell and Emma Hamilton nursed him in her own home. It is around that time that their affair started. It seems to have been tolerated by her husband as when they returned to England the three of them lived together quite openly.

The affair soon became public knowledge. Emma Hamilton would not ask her husband for a divorce, she felt it would be unfair to him. She gave birth to Nelson's daughter in 1801. Sir William died in 1803, shortly before Nelson went to fight again in the Napoleonic wars.
