The oddities were that his body was found wearing a nightshirt outside of the house without a mark on it. His servant Taylor lay dead beside him. It was later ascertained that both had been strangled.

Afterwards Queen Elizabeth I claimed that she had been deceived into signing Mary's death warrant. Some have claimed that Elizabeth knew that Mary had to die. Either way, Mary was beheaded using an axe instead of the more royal method of a sword. After the beheading the executioner lifted Mary's head so that all could see that she was dead.

The head fell out of his hand - Mary had been wearing a wig.
