Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ruff is to Neck as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Hose is to Legs

Ruffs came into fashion during the reign of Elizabeth I. The bigger they were, the more important the person wearing it. They were starched so they were stiff enough to stand straight up. Elizabeth I is noted for wearing huge ruffs, often decorated with jewels for added elegance. Hose were worn by men, and they were basically "tights," or really tight pants.

The object was to use as little material as possible when making them, because they were supposed to be skin-tight.
2. Hever Castle is to Kent as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Greenwich Palace is to London

Hever Castle was the Boleyn family residence during the sixteenth century, and was located in Kent. Greenwich Palace was a royal residence, and just one of the many palaces that were located in London. The other three palaces (The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and Hampton Court) are also in London.
3. Katherine of Aragon is to Arthur Tudor as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Amy Robsart is to Robert Dudley

Katherine of Aragon and Arthur Tudor were actually married. Their wedding took place in 1501, although Arthur unfortunately died in 1502, and because of his untimely death, she married his brother Henry VIII in 1509, which later caused a lot of controversy about whether their marriage was valid according to the Bible. Amy, a minor noblewoman, and Robert, close friend of Elizabeth I, were married around 1550, and their marriage lasted about ten years until she was discovered dead of mysterious causes at her friend's country home. None of the other couples were married.
4. Anne Boleyn is to Falcon as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Katherine of Aragon is to Pomegranate

Every wife of Henry VIII had a badge. Anne Boleyn's badge was of a falcon on a stump. Katherine of Aragon's was a pomegranate, which was a symbol of the Spanish royal family, and stood for fertility. Jane Seymour actually had the Phoenix, Anne of Cleves had the arms of the Duchy of Cleves, Katherine Howard had a Tudor rose, and Katherine Parr had a maiden coming from a Tudor rose.
5. Edward VI is to Tuberculosis as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Katherine Parr is to Childbed Fever

Edward VI is related to tuberculosis because he died of it in 1553, at the young age of fifteen. Since he had no heirs, the crown should have gone to his older sister Mary, and then to his other sister Elizabeth, but instead his cousin Lady Jane Grey got it, although she was deposed only nine days later. Katherine Parr fits with this because she died of childbed fever not long after giving birth to her first child, Mary Seymour, in 1549. Elizabeth I was not executed, Mary I did not actually have a child, and Henry VIII never had smallpox, although he was always deathly afraid of catching it or any other fatal disease such as the plague.
6. Charles Brandon is to Frances Grey as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Henry Grey is to Jane Grey

The relationship between Charles Brandon and Frances Grey is father to daughter. Charles married Princess Mary Tudor in 1515, and Frances was one of the three children that resulted in the marriage. Henry Grey, the husband of Frances, was the father of Lady Jane Grey, the nine-days queen. Edward and Mary were half-siblings, Henry VII was the grandfather of Elizabeth I, and Philip II was Katherine of Aragon's great nephew, so they don't work with this.
7. William Cecil is to Baron Burghley as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Robert Devereux is to Earl of Essex

This relationship was titles. William Cecil was a very devoted advisor to Elizabeth I, and so she rewarded him with a noble title like she did many of her favorites. Robert Devereux, on the other hand, inherited his title from his father, Walter Devereux, when he was a child. None of the other people actually held the titles they are paired with.
8. George Boleyn is to Mary Carey as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Robert Dudley is to Mary Sidney

George Boleyn was Mary Carey's brother (her maiden name was Boleyn, and they were the siblings of the famous Anne Boleyn), so the only pair that fits with this is Robert Dudley and Mary Sidney, both favorites of Elizabeth I. Edward VI was cousins with Jane Grey, Henry Carey was the nephew of Elizabeth Howard, and Henry Grey was Mary Tudor's son-in-law.
9. Henry VIII is to Anglican as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Edward VI is to Protestant

This question is about churches. Henry VIII established the Anglican church in the 1520s/1530s when he wanted to get an annulment from his twenty-four year marriage to Queen Katherine of Aragon, since the Pope would not do it himself. Edward, the only surviving legimate son of Henry VIII, went even farther by establishing the Protestant church when he came to the throne in 1547.

When his sister Mary I (or Bloody Mary) became queen in 1553, she returned England back to the Catholic church, and then it reverted to a mild Protestantism when the last Tudor, Elizabeth I, began her reign.

Henry VII was the traditional Catholic, before all of the religion mess in the early 1520s.
10. Mary Stuart is to Scotland as ________ is to ________?

Answer: Elizabeth I is to England

This category is much simpler: queens regnant to countries. Mary Stuart is better known as Mary Queen of Scots, which she became at her father's death only a week after her birth. Elizabeth I was Queen of England from 1558 to 1603, after spending eleven nerve-racking years trying to stay out of trouble, although scandal and religious issues almost prevented her survival. None of the other monarchs are matched up with their correct country, since Henry VIII and Jane Grey ruled England and Henry Stuart was King of Scotland when he married his first cousin Mary Stuart.
11. Henry VIII is to "God and My Right" as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Elizabeth I is to "Always the Same"

This is about Tudor mottos. Each ruler had their own motto to describe themselves and their rule. Henry VIII picked "Dieu et Mon Droit," or "God and My Right," and Elizabeth I chose "Semper Eadem," or "Always the Same." Henry's wives also had their own mottos, but Anne Boleyn's was "The Most Happy," not Katherine Howard's. Jane Seymour had "Bound to Obey and Serve," and Katherine of Aragon had "Humble and Loyal."
12. Katherine Howard is to "Rose Without a Thorn" as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Anne of Cleves is to "The Flanders Mare"

Katherine Howard was the fifth wife of Henry VIII. His nickname for her was "Rose Without a Thorn," because he felt that she was perfect, and had absolutely no flaws (or thorns). This was, of course, before he found out that she was cheating on him. Anne of Cleves, his fourth wife, also had a nickname, "Flanders Mare." This was a reference to her homeland in the Low Countries, around where Germany is now, and it also shows his disgust with her when she arrived in England to marry him, since he had thought that she would be prettier than that after looking at her portrait.
13. Mary Tudor (Duchess of Suffolk) is to France as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Margaret Tudor is to Scotland

Mary Tudor was the younger sister of Henry VIII. He married her off to King Louis XII of France in 1514, making her Queen Consort of France. Similarly, her sister Margaret was married to the Scottish King James IV and sent there to become Queen Consort of Scotland. None of the other queens ruled the countries they are paired with, and in fact never even visited them.
14. Henry VII is to Margaret Beaufort as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Henry Fitzroy is to Bessie Blount

This pair is much easier to figure out. Henry VII was the son of Margaret Beaufort, who had him when she was only twelve years old. Henry Fitzroy was likewise the son of Bessie Blount, one of the mistresses of Henry VIII, and Henry Fitzroy was in fact his son (Fitzroy means "son of the king"). Philip II and Mary I were married, as were Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves, and Robert Devereux was a second cousin to Elizabeth I.
15. Henry VIII is to Sickness as ______ is to ______?

Answer: Elizabeth I is to Marriage

Henry VIII is remembered as a strong, fearless king, but it is not very well known that in fact he was scared of something: getting sick. Whenever the plague, sweating sickness, or smallpox was going around London, he would flee to the country, even abandoning his love Anne Boleyn when she came down with the sweating sickness in 1528 until he was sure that she was better. Elizabeth, too, is remembered as a strong ruler, but it has been suggested that her father's unfortunate marital situations (especially the executions of Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard) as well as the dangerous affair she had with the married Admiral Thomas Seymour as a teenager (where she was almost executed with him for his rash attempted kidnapping of Edward VI) made her forever fearful of getting married, and it is one of the reasons why she decided never to marry.
