Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what range was Elizabeth's height estimated to be?

Answer: 5' 3" - 5' 5"

2. Elizabeth had a motto. The English translation is 'always the same'. What was it in Latin?

Answer: semper eadem

This was on the royal coat of arms during her reign. Sometimes the Queen's royal arms were depicted with the standard royal motto of 'Dieu et mon Droit' ('God and my right').
3. Complete this quote: 'There is no marvel in a woman learning to speak, but there would be in teaching her to ...'

Answer: hold her tongue.

Elizabeth said this when the French ambassador praised her linguistic skills.
4. In August 1588 Elizabeth I, when there was still the danger of a Spanish invasion, Elizabeth I delivered a now famous speech to her troops in which she said, 'I know I have the body of a weak, feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too'. Where did she deliver this speech?

Answer: Tilbury

In the last hundred years or so a few historians have questioned the authenticity of this speech, but it is in keeping with her style and accepted by most historians as genuine.
5. There is no written document of any kind in which Elizabeth I left the throne of England to James VI of Scotland.

Answer: True

However, since 1598 Robert Cecil corresponded with King James VI in order to secure an orderly succession. After the death of Elizabeth I some of her councillors said that very shortly before her death she named him as her succesor, but there is no way that this claim can be checked.
6. "With your head and my purse, we could do anything." Who did Elizabeth say this to?

Answer: William Cecil

William Cecil is thought to have been one of the few men Elizabeth trusted. She greatly admired his intelligence and they were a good match to take care of England.
7. What was one of Elizabeth's favourite pastimes?

Answer: riding

The queen rode faster than nearly all of her men and scared a lot of them. She continued riding at such speeds well into old age.
8. Who was Elizabeth rumored to have had an affair with when she was a teenager?

Answer: Thomas Seymour

Seymour was the Lord High Admiral. He married Elizabeth's step-mother, Catherine Parr, and she died shortly after giving birth to his daughter, Mary. Elizabeth was never fond of John Dudley, as he had tried to place his daughter-in-law on the throne, in place of her sister, Mary. William Cecil was the queen's secretary of state. Edward Seymour was the Lord Protector during Edward VI's reign.

Though rumours spread of an affair between Seymour and Princess Elizabeth, it was more a case of Seymour making improper advances towards the young princess.
9. Elizabeth I had a quick and furious temper.

Answer: True

Hers was a legendary temper. An example of this is her response to the French ambassador when he complimented her linguistic skills. "There is no marvel in a woman learning to speak, but there would be in teaching her to hold her tongue."
10. What languages did Elizabeth speak?

Answer: English, French, Latin, Italian, Greek, Welsh and Flemish

Elizabeth was an outstandingly well educated woman, especially for her time. She was tutored by Roger Ascham when she was young.
