Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Fletcher was an English playwright, who is overshadowed by which contemporary (of his), more famous playwright?

Answer: William Shakespeare

John Fletcher (1579-1625) actually collaborated with Shakespeare on two plays, "Henry VIII" and "The Two Noble Kinsmen". In his own time he was nearly as well known as Shakespeare.
2. Louise Fletcher is an actress famous for playing a cruel nurse and a scheming religious leader. What other distinction does she have?

Answer: Both of her parents were deaf.

Fletcher won the Academy Award for Best Actress, BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her performance as the cruel Nurse Ratched in the 1975 film "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest". She also starred in the perfectly horrible sequel to "The Exorcist", "Exorcist II: The Heretic".
3. Fletcher Christian was (in)famous for leading a mutiny against Captain Bligh of HMS Bounty in 1789. Which actor did NOT portray Christian on film?

Answer: Tyrone Power

Christian set Captain Bligh and a few of his men adrift in a rowing boat with few supplies. Incredibly Bligh made it back to England eventually and devoted the rest of his life to bringing the mutineers to justice. He captured 14 of them, but not Mr. Christian.
4. Governor Thomas Clement Fletcher issued a proclamation freeing the slaves in 1865 in which state?

Answer: Missouri

California and Oregon never had slavery, and Alabama's (and the other states in the Confederacy) slaves were freed, at least in principle, by President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Missouri was allowed to have slaves by the Missouri Compromise of 1820.
5. Fletcher class U.S. Navy destroyers were designed with a longer range than other destroyers, and were used primarily in which conflict?

Answer: World War II

Fletcher class destroyers were built after the U.S. entry into World War II, and given a longer range in preparation for service in the Pacific Theater against Japan.
6. English actor Dexter Fletcher made his film debut in the gangster musical Bugsy Malone. Later appearing in "Band of Brothers", what other TV series is he known for?

Answer: Hotel Babylon

Bugsy Malone was a musical film with a gangster theme, but all the main roles were played by children. Dexter Fletcher as Staff Sergeant John "Johnny" Martin appeared in eight of ten episodes of "Band of Brothers."
7. Fletcher Henderson was an important jazz composer and bandleader. What instrument did Fletcher play?

Answer: Piano

Fletcher Henderson's orchestra was also known as the Seven Brown Babies. In 1924 he hired Louis Armstrong to play trumpet. He also earned a degree in chemistry from Atlanta University.
8. Celebrity couples are known for giving their children unusual names. Which couple named their son Fletcher?

Answer: Mia Farrow and Andre Previn

Fletcher Farrow Previn is reported to have said that he photoshopped Mia's ex-husband Woody Allen out of all of the family photos and edited him out of their home movies.
9. Founded in 1933, The Fletcher School is the oldest exclusively graduate school of international affairs in the United States. Which private university is The Fletcher School a part of?

Answer: Tufts University

Famous graduates of The Fletcher School include former governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson, who also served as Secretary of Energy and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
10. Neil Fletcher presented his culinary invention, the corn dog, at the Texas State Fair in 1942.

Answer: True

Neil and his brother Carl spent hours trying to come up with a corn batter that would taste good and stick to a wiener. His descendants still sell over 400,000 Fletcher's Corny Dogs each year at the Texas State Fair, and have added jalapeno cheese corny dogs and turkey dogs to the menu.
