Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the last words of Winston Churchill?

Answer: I'm bored with it all.

Sir Winston Churchill was not only an important British Prime Minister and a great wartime leader but is also well-known for his sarcastic and witty remarks and quotes.
The three remaining last words are those of Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie, American politician Robert Kennedy and the American Old West gunslinger Doc Holliday.
2. Dying in a shabby hotel room, Oscar Wilde supposedly criticized what part of the room during his last words?

Answer: Wallpaper

The Irish writer and poet Oscar Wilde died of cerebral meningitis on 30 November 1900 in his room in the Hôtel d'Alsace in Paris. Though he was penniless he received the most luxurious room and the finest food. Still, he was used to a better life style and commented on his room: "My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One of us has got to go." On his deathbed he reportedly uttered, "I am dying beyond my means," and later on "Either the wallpaper goes, or I do."
3. Of the following scientists, whose last words are unknown?

Answer: Albert Einstein

Refusing surgery following the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, Einstein died at the Princeton Hospital (New Jersey) on 18 April 1955 at 76. On his deathbed the father of modern physics reportedly mumbled his last words. Alas, the only witness, the attending nurse, did not understand them as he was speaking in his mother tongue, German. The last words of the other three scientists were all reported. Thomas Edison said "It is very beautiful over there." The Greek mathematician Archimedes was murdered by a Roman invader shortly after telling him "Do not disturb my circles!" and Charles Darwin's last words are commonly attributed to be "I am not the least afraid of death," although some time afterwards he reportedly uttered "I feel as if I should faint."
4. What did the heirless Alexander the Great answer in response to his generals' question who would inherit his empire?

Answer: To the strongest!

Following this unclear answer a brutal war of succession among Alexander's generals would make the Macedonian Empire crumble - the Wars of the Diadochi. Modern historians, however, speculate that Alexander's voice might have been indistinct at the time of his death and that he may have said "Krateros" (the name of one of his generals who was not present at his deathbed) which sounds similar to the Ancient Greek word "Kratistos" meaning "To the strongest".
5. While persuading his doctor and friend to end his pain by killing him, who reportedly said "Talk it over with Anna, and if she thinks it's right, then make an end of it"?

Answer: Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Schlomo Freud, Austrian founder of the discipline of psychoanalysis, was forced to flee from Vienna to the United Kingdom following the German annexation of Austria, called the Anschluss. One year later, in September 1939, Freud persuaded his friend, Dr. Max Schur, to help him commit euthanasia.

The resulting conversation was later recorded by Schur, who also attributed Freud with saying: "Schur, you remember our 'contract' not to leave me in the lurch when the time had come. Now it is nothing but torture and makes no sense."
6. What were reported to be Voltaire's last words after being asked by a priest to renounce Satan?

Answer: This is no time for making enemies.

The final words of the French Enlightenment writer and philosopher Voltaire are somewhat disputed. Other sources quote him as having responded "For God sake, leave me alone!" or "I am abandoned by God and man! I will give you half of what I am worth if you will give me six months' life. Then I shall go to hell; and you will go with me. O Christ! O Jesus Christ!"
7. While the last words of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin are uncertain, his final radio transmission before his historic rocket liftoff in Vostok 1 in 1961 reveal that he was worried about not having enough of what?

Answer: Sausages

Indeed, in his last known conversation before liftoff, the hero of the Soviet Union and first man in space talked about food. Without realizing their radio transmissions were being recorded, Gagarin and chief rocket scientist Sergei Korolyov talked about the feast they were about to have after Yuri's return to Earth. His words were: "The main thing is that there is sausage - to go with the moonshine!"
Yuri died seven years after the launch of Vostok 1, on 27 March 1968, during a routine training flight in Vladimir Oblast. His last words before death are uncertain.
NOTE: Thanks to LegoBandito for pointing out the originally incorrect question. Spasibo!
8. Upon awaking on her deathbed and seeing herself surrounded by her family, Lady Nancy Astor asked: "Am I dying or __________?"

Answer: ..is this my birthday?

Lady Nancy Witcher Astor, Viscountess Astor, was the first woman to sit as a Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons. Following her forced retirement in 1945 she became increasingly isolated and frustrated. She died on 2 May 1964 at her daughter's home in Lincolnshire, surrounded by her children.
9. John Wilkes Booth, famous for assassinating Abraham Lincoln, whispered in his dying moments: "Tell my mother I died for my country." Afterwards he repeated which word twice?

Answer: Useless. Useless.

Following the assassination of President Lincoln on 12 April 1865, Booth went into hiding. Eventually he was tracked down and shot by Union Army Sergeant Thomas "Boston" Corbett. He died shortly before dawn, looking at his bloody hands whispering his last words.
The last words of President Lincoln himself were: "She wont think anything about it."
10. Who taunted his executioner with the words: "I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man!"?

Answer: Che Guevara

Argentine Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara was captured and executed by Bolivian soldiers on October 9, 1967. Allegedly the man who shot him, Mario Terán, was half-drunk and volunteered, wishing to avenge the death of three of his friends battling Guevara's guerrillas. Claus von Stauffenberg, who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944, proclaimed "Long live our holy Germany!" before being shot. Russian Marxist revolutionary Leon Trotsky was mortally wounded by an assassin and, before collapsing, told his guards: "Don't kill this man! He has a story to tell." The Swedish labor activist and songwriter Joe Hill wrote his last words in a letter to Bill Haywood: "Goodbye, Bill. I die like a true blue rebel. Don't waste any time in mourning. Organize."
