Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Barney Rubble and Mr. Spaceley which famous voice actor (or actress) has the gravestone inscription of "That's all, Folks!"?

Answer: Mel Blanc

Melvin Jerome "Mel" Blanc passed away July 10, 1989 at the age of 81. The famous voice actor, known as "The Man of a Thousand Voices" gave a sound to other characters, like Daffy Duck, Speedy Gonzales, the Tasmanian Devil, Yosemite Sam, Pepé Le Pew, and Sylvester the Cat in "Looney Tunes" and "Merrie Melodies". Blanc later voiced Barney Rubble in "The Flintstones" and Mr. Spaceley in "The Jetsons" for Hanna-Barbera. Blanc stated in his will that he wanted the phrase "That's all Folks", to be engraved on his tombstone, the phrase trademarked to Porky Pig.
2. Dee Dee Ramone, punk rock bassist from "The Ramones" has the words "OK ... I gotta go now" on his gravestone, a reference to which of their songs?

Answer: Let's Go

Also on Ramone's (whose real name is Douglas Glenn Colvin) epitaph are the song lyrics "I feel so safe flying on a ray on the highest trails above" from another song, "Highest Trails From Above". Ramone passed away from an apparent heroin overdose in June, 2002. He was buried in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, not far from bandmate Johnny Ramone.
3. We do not know how or when John Yeast died, nor do we know what his profession was. However, his tombstone in Ruidoso, New Mexico, has the line "Here lies John Yeast. Pardon me for not __________". Which word completes the line ?

Answer: rising

We do hope Yeast was a baker. Other good jokes from headstones from non-celebs include:

"Here lies the body of Jonathan Blake - Stepped on the gas Instead of the brake."
"On the 22nd of June - Jonathan Fiddle - Went out of tune."
"Ma loves Pa - Pa loves women. Ma caught Pa with 2 in swimmin'. Here lies Pa." Lawrence L. Cook Jr.
4. On what Irish comedian's headstone, is the Gaelic text "Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite", translated into English means "I told you I was sick"?

Answer: Spike Milligan

Milligan passed away on February 27, 2002. Milligan was originally born in India, and became an Irish citizen in 1962, after he was declared "stateless" by Britain. Milligan was most famously known for "The Goon Show". Milligan also was a writer, musician, soldier, and actor. Milligan wrote a seven volume biography of his time as a soldier in the Second World War, entitled "Puckoon". Milligan wrote a fair amount of poetry as well, most being for kids. Milligan died from liver disease at his home in Rye, East Sussex.

The church where Milligan was buried refused to let him use the line "I told you I was sick" on the headstone, so a compromise was made.
5. Ludolph van Ceulen, a famous 16th century mathematician had what number engraved on his tombstone, a number that he discovered during his lifetime?

Answer: The first 35 digits of pi

Born in Germany in 1540, Ceulen emigrated to the Netherlands in order to teach mathematics and fencing, another love of his. In 1600, he was named the first professor at Leiden University in the school's history. Ceulen taught there for the rest of his life, and published a book called "On The Circle", which was written in Dutch, but was translated to Latin by one of his students. Ceulen discovered the number by using polygons measuring 2 by 2 to the 62nd power.

The number was known as the "Ludolphine" number, but later became known as pi.
6. Which legendary game show creator's headstone says that "I will not be right back after this message"?

Answer: Merv Griffin

Griffin passed away in August, 2007 from prostate cancer. Griffin began as a singer and a Broadway performer. Griffin later hosted his own talk show before moving into game shows. Griffin created hit shows Jeopardy in 1964 and Wheel of Fortune in 1975.

In his early days, Griffin hosted "The Price Is Right" while Bill Cullen was vacationing, and on "To Tell the Truth" while Bud Collyer was off.
7. Which 1960s and 1970s actress' epitaph tells you to "Go away - I'm asleep"?

Answer: Joan Hackett

Hackett died at the age of 49 on October 8, 1983 from ovarian cancer. Hackett appeared in episodes of "The Twilight Zone", "Gunsmoke", "Bonanza" and "Taxi". Her epitaph comes from her love of beauty sleep, and she would commonly hang a note on her door when catching some z's.
8. Ironically, on which legendary country music singer's epitaph is the title of the song that was on the Country Top 40 charts at the time of his death?

Answer: Hank Williams

Williams' song and epitaph "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" was released in late 1952. Williams then died from a heart attack in January 1953 at only 29. The song then reached #1 status later in January, contrary to belief that it was #1 when Williams died.

As evidenced by the title, the song was written to be humorous, but took this ironic twist by not only Williams' passing, but co-writer Fred Rose's death within a year of its release.
9. Which legendary American figure's gravestone says "Murdered by a traitor and a coward whose name is not worthy to appear here"?

Answer: Jesse James

James' mother came up with his gravestone inscription after her son was murdered on April 3, 1882 in St. Joseph, Missouri. The famous outlaw was just about to head out on another robbery, when Robert Ford shot James in the back of the head, while James was cleaning off a dusty picture on the wall. Ford, along with his brother and co-conspirator Charley each committed the assassination for a reward supposedly posted by the governor of Missouri. Both were sentenced to death by hanging.
10. Which legendary baseball player's tombstone says "61/61, Against All Odds", in reference to his 1961 performance that saw him set the-then record of 61 home runs in a season?

Answer: Roger Maris

Maris broke Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in 1927, when he belted 61 in 1961. Maris' record was then shattered by Mark McGwire in 1997. After his playing career, Maris was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and passed away on December 14, 1985 at the age of 51.
