Rebecca (or Rebekah) was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau. A servant of Abraham had met her by a well, and asked for her to go with him to marry Abraham's son, Isaac. She was barren, but once Isaac had asked the Lord to intervene, she had the twins, Jacob and Esau.

They had 'struggled together within her' (King James, Genesis 25 v 22) and the Lord had said that this was a sign of the struggle the two would have as they grew. They were to become the fathers of two nations, Israel and Edom.
