Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which American author wrote that "one cat just leads to another" in a letter to his first wife?

Answer: Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was an American writer who wrote many well known novels including 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and 'The Old Man and the Sea'. The quote used in this question, "one cat just leads to another", is from a letter to his first wife, Hadley Richardson, who Hemingway married in 1921 and divorced in 1927.

Hemingway wrote the quote in the question before listing and describing his many cats.
2. Which 20th century artist said "God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat"?

Answer: Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish artist who was one of the founders of the Cubist art movement in the early 20th century. Although he was born in Spain, Picasso lived most of his adult life in France. One of Picasso's most well known paintings is his 1937 work 'Guernica' which shows the suffering and violence caused by the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

This quote was used by Picasso when showing Francoise Gilot, who Picasso had a relationship with, an album of his prints and was Picasso's comment on the varying styles of his artworks. The full quote from Picasso is "No wonder his style is so ambiguous. It's like God's, God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant, and the cat. He has no real style. He just keeps on trying other things."
3. Complete this quote from American singer-songwriter Bo Diddley: "I've never got paid. A dude with a pencil is worse than a cat with a ____".

Answer: Machine Gun

Bo Diddley was an American singer, songwriter and producer who has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. The quote in the question was said by Bo Diddley in relation to not being paid royalties for his songs.
4. Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping said, "It doesn't matter if a cat is black or white, as long as it catches ____". Which word completes this quote?

Answer: Mice

Deng Xiaoping was born in the Chinese province of Sichuan in 1904. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1924 and spent time in Moscow studying Communist political doctrines. He became the leader of China in 1978, a position that he held until 1989. Deng is often referred to as the 'Architect of Modern China', as he introduced economic reforms that opened China for trade. Deng is supposed to have said the quote in this question in relation to the economic changes he enacted in China suggesting that the most important factor is that things work rather than what they might look like.
5. Which Founding Father of the United States said "a countryman between two lawyers is like a fish between two cats"?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and was part of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. As well as being well known as a political figure Franklin was also a scientist who was responsible for a number of inventions including the lightning rod and bifocal glasses.

The quote in the question is intended as a comment on the way lawyers behave suggesting that an ordinary person caught in a legal situation is as vulnerable as a fish between two cats.
6. "Time spent with cats is never wasted" is a quote often misattributed to which well known psychoanalyst?

Answer: Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded the discipline of psychoanalysis. Freud developed many theories relating to how the mind works including his famous model of the mind being made up of three parts called the id, ego and super-ego. Freud spent most of his working life in the Austrian city of Vienna before leaving for the UK in 1938 to avoid Nazi persecution due to his Jewish parentage. He died in the UK in 1939.

There is no evidence that Freud ever said "time spent with cats is never wasted" despite many websites suggesting it is a quote of his. In fact it seems Freud was not a cat lover as he once wrote in a letter to a friend "I, as is well known, do not like cats".
7. Which American humourist wrote "The trouble with a kitten is that eventually it becomes a cat."

Answer: Ogden Nash

"The trouble with a kitten is that eventually it becomes a cat" is the complete text of Nash's 1940 poem called 'The Kitten'.
