Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of all of the Tudor children, Mary Tudor was the youngest child to reach adulthood.

Answer: True

Mary's parents were Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch, and Elizabeth of York, daughter of King Edward IV. Their oldest child was Arthur, born in 1486, and then they had Margaret in 1489. Henry (the future Henry VIII) followed in 1491, and Mary was born in 1496.

There were four other children born (Elizabeth, Edmund, Edward, and Katherine), but they all died early on. Mary was therefore the baby of the family, and was well loved by her parents.
2. Mary was closest to which of her siblings?

Answer: Henry

Henry and Mary were very close, especially after Arthur died in 1502 and Margaret left for Scotland to marry King James IV at a young age. Mary was Henry's favorite sister, and so she was able to avoid his anger on many occasions.
3. Mary's brother Henry became king in 1509, and soon started making plans for her marriage. How old was she when she first married?

Answer: 18

Mary was one of the most beautiful princesses at the time, and it was not hard to find her a husband. Henry also sought to ally himself with the other powerful countries at the time, such as Spain and France, which a marriage would help accomplish. Therefore he had no regrets about marrying his little sister off so young.
4. What was the name of Mary's first husband?

Answer: Louis XII

Louis XII was the King of France. He was in his fifties and sick, and Mary was less than pleased with her marriage, but she had no choice but to obey her brother. She married him in 1514, and made sure no one in France suspected her displeasure.
5. At the time of her marriage Mary was already in love. Who was he?

Answer: Charles Brandon

Charles Brandon was her brother's best friend, and he was about eleven years older than the Princess. He had been raised with the royal children when his father was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, and so she grew up with him. He was one of the reasons why Mary was so unhappy about marrying Louis, but before she left for France she was able get Henry VIII to promise that she could pick her next husband.
6. Being so much younger than her husband, Mary outlived him. In what year did he die?

Answer: 1515

Louis died of exhaustion less than a year after the marriage. Henry quickly sent Charles Brandon to France to bring Mary back, so he could start planning her next marriage. He did not intend to keep his promise to her.
7. Mary spent years in mourning for her late husband before finally marrying her childhood love.

Answer: False

When Charles came to get Mary in France only a few months later, she convinced him to marry her right then and there, without even telling the King. Henry was furious that his best friend and his sister would go behind his back, and summoned them back to England.
8. King Henry, angry at his sister's marriage, decided to punish them before accepting them back into his good graces. What was their punishment?

Answer: They had to pay a crippling fine.

Henry decided to go easy on them, since Mary was his favorite sister. He promised to pardon them if they paid him a huge amount of money, which they agreed to. It took years to pay it off, but Mary felt it was worth it.
9. By the time she died in 1533, how many children did Mary and Charles have?

Answer: 4

Mary and Charles had three healthy children together: Henry Brandon, Earl of Lincoln; Frances Brandon, mother of the nine-days-queen Lady Jane Grey; and Eleanor Brandon. She died before her children and her husband, and after her death Charles married once more.

Henry mourned for his sister, who was still angry with him for trying to divorce his wife, her friend Katherine of Aragon. She is buried in St. Mary's Church.
10. Which title did Mary never hold?

Answer: Duchess of Norfolk

As the daughter of a King, Mary was Princess by birth. Through her marriage with Louis she was Queen of France and later, after his death, Dowager Queen of France, and through her marriage with Charles she was Duchess of Suffolk, a title given to them through Henry's favor.

The Duchess of Norfolk was, at the time, the wife of Thomas Howard, the uncle of Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard, both wives of Henry VIII.
