Question 5 of 10
5. Here's a man with a bright idea. He lived right beside a river, a river that was always teeming with fish. But he didn't want the boredom of actually fishing. Instead, he came up with a brilliant plan: he connected a cable to the main power supply of his house, and trailed the cable in the water. One bright flash later, the fish were floating face up. Sadly, so was the man. What went wrong? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Please try not to laugh. When a person wakes up in the middle of the night, he/she is often a little groggy and finds it hard to think straight. Like this man, for instance. On the night of 21st December 1992 he was roused by his phone ringing. He grabbed it, and held it to his ear. Unfortunately, he then died. The reason for this was, the thing he brought to his ear was not a telephone. What was it? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. In 1994, a delinquent decided he had nothing better to do than to rob a vending machine. However, the vending machine had other ideas. In a moment of irony, the young man died. How did he meet his end? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Have you ever been to a theme park? Do you know those big signs, the ones that warn you that passing this point will result in your death? Well, our next Award-winner thought it wise to completely ignore those signs. In 1998, he climbed over a fence to retrieve his cap, which he had lost. The signs tried to warn him that what was going to happen? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Ignoring signs has fatal consequences. On 10th July, 1999, a group were hiking along the Merced River. One of them complained that his feet were sore, so they stopped for a rest. Despite the fact that there was a large sign that said, it plain terms, "If you go in the river, you will die", the hiker though it would be wonderful to wade in the river for a moment. This was a big mistake. What was so deadly about the river? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. This one was so comical, even the people who saw it happen had to stop and laugh. In São Paulo, in 1999, police were chasing armed suspects in a car. They began firing at each other. In the heat of the moment, one gangster made a basic error. What was it? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This one is probably an urban legend but is too good to omit. On 18th April, 1999, a sword-swallower foolishly tried to swallow something other than a sword, something that killed him. What did our friend try to swallow?

Answer: An umbrella

He accidentally pressed the button that opens the umbrella. It sprang open when it was still down his throat, killing him. It must have been interesting to have been in the audience at the time!
2. On 13th July 1997, a fast-food restaurant worker proved that bungee-jumping isn't safe. However, it is safe as long as you don't do what this guy did. What act of stupidity resulted in his death?

Answer: He forgot that bungee ropes stretch

He measured the bungee rope, and then positioned himself so that he would stop a few feet short of the ground. Clever him. Well actually, not so clever - he completely forgot that the rope was elastic. He went straight into the ground headfirst. Ouch.
3. Friday 13th August 1999 definitely was unlucky for one budding astronomer. He was busy trying to watch the annual Perseid meteor shower, but he was bothered by the glare of a nearby streetlight. Not one to give up easily, he thought, "Blast that streetlight! I know exactly what I'll do, I'll _________ " ?

Answer: use my mechanical know-how to disable the lamp

The inept chap prised the service panel off the streetlight, and sawed through the wires inside. Or tried to, anyway. His sister reported seeing a flash, and that was the end of this Award winner.
4. On 11th April 2000, two 47-year-old men got a bit drunk. They then proceeded to try and re-enact a famous scene, with fatal consequences. Which famous scene?

Answer: William Tell shooting the apple off his son's head

Well, they were drunk. One man balanced a beer can on his head; the other took aim with his rifle... His friend was killed immediately. Police put it down to a case of accidental death, and nothing to do with an argument the two had had earlier in the day.

Answer: He was standing in the water and was electrocuted

Not such a genius after all. He suffered the exact fate he had planned for the fish.

Answer: A gun (he shot himself)

It was a Smith & Wesson .38 special, if you're interested in guns. It was sitting on his bedside table. He pressed it to his head, and it went off. It's a mistake anyone could make!
7. In 1994, a delinquent decided he had nothing better to do than to rob a vending machine. However, the vending machine had other ideas. In a moment of irony, the young man died. How did he meet his end?

Answer: The vending machine toppled over and fell on top of him

Fortunately, the police did not arrest the vending machine, since it was defending itself. The moral of the story: crime doesn't pay.

Answer: That he would be beheaded by a rollercoaster

Ironic, isn't it? He went to retrieve his hat, and now he doesn't even have a head to put it on. As the ride hurtled towards him, a person's foot (it was one of these rides where your feet are dangling) caught the side of his head and swept it clean off. By the way, the woman who kicked him managed to sue for damage to her leg.

Answer: There was a waterfall just around the corner

His friends frantically called local authorities, even as the hiker was carried over the edge and screamed as he fell down the 594 feet of the Nevada Falls. Rangers recovered his body a few hours later, with the help of a helicopter.
10. This one was so comical, even the people who saw it happen had to stop and laugh. In São Paulo, in 1999, police were chasing armed suspects in a car. They began firing at each other. In the heat of the moment, one gangster made a basic error. What was it?

Answer: He pulled the pin out of a grenade, then threw the pin at the police

As one bystander commented, "It was like something out of a Warner Brothers cartoon". He merrily held onto the grenade, and the confused police saw the pin bounce off their front window. They stopped to watch the car explode, killing the bandits who threw the pin, and wounding the others.

It doesn't say much for humanity, either the gangster's mistake or the fact that the onlookers (including the police) burst out laughing!
