Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She was a judge in Ancient Israel. Which of these women features in the Bible, described as a heroine and prophetess?

Answer: Deborah

Deborah is the only female judge in the Old Testament. She persuaded Barak to lead his forces and conquer Sisera.
2. An Old Testament heroine next. Just as Jael killed Sisera, Judith disposed of Holofernes. This is the subject of much art and sculpture, including an early 17th century version 'Judith Slaying Holofernes'. This is by a female artist and Old Master. Name her.

Answer: Artemisia Gentileschi

Florentine artist Artemisia Gentileschi is much admired these days. An independent woman, she went to court to prosecute a her tutor, Tassi, for rape in an era when that sort of thing wasn't done.
This painting is perhaps her best known; you can draw any conclusions you like from the subject matter, but it is often said that Holofernes in her painting looks remarkably like Tassi.
3. Boudica or Boadicea, queen of the Iceni, fought the Romans in Britain and her troops are said to have killed nearly a hundred thousand Romans. Eventually they lost at the battle of Watling Street, and Boadicea either killed herself or died of an undisclosed illness. Can you locate the Iceni on a map of the UK?

Answer: The East coast, in modern day Norfolk and Suffolk

Boadicea was highly admired by the English in the 19th century -- she was identified as an early parallel to Queen Victoria, Lord Tennyson wrote a poem about her, and her image was preserved in a statue on the Victoria Embankment.
4. Joan of Arc could certainly fight. She persuaded the French troops to take on the English; her reward to be burnt at the stake. Which of these words was a nickname associated with her?

Answer: La Pucelle

The derivation of pucelle is uncertain but probably linked to the latin word for a young woman. Joan was captured in France by troops loyal to the English and convicted of witchcraft. But she is now a saint.
5. Queen Elizabeth I ruled for 45 years as the last of the Tudors. Her relationship with the Duke of Essex led to an opera, Gloriana, written by whom?

Answer: Benjamin Britten

Lytton Strachey wrote the book on which the opera was based. It was composed by Britten to coincide with the coronation of Elizabeth II.
6. Catherine the Great of Russia was one of Russia's greatest and most successful rulers. The city of Yekaterinburg is named after her, but it might be most associated with someone or something else?

Answer: It was where Nicolas II and his family died

All of the former Tsar's family were imprisoned there in 1918, and they were killed there later that year. Did Anastasia survive? Recent historical investigations have confirmed she did not and that the woman claiming to be her was an impostor.
7. Grace Darling was a folk hero in England in the nineteenth century. For what act of heroism was she famous?

Answer: She helped save shipwreck survivors

Grace Darling was the daughter of a lighthouse keeper who helped rescue survivors from a sinking ship in the middle of a storm, by taking a rowing boat out when the lifeboat could not make the trip.
8. This woman led the suffragette movement in the UK to obtain the vote for women. It took 25 years from the start of the movement to allow woman voters over 21 to vote legally (though earlier women over 30 were permitted to vote). Who was she?

Answer: Emmeline Pankhurst

The suffragettes were imprisoned and force-fed when they went on hunger strike. They tried many tactics (Emily Davidson threw herself under the king's horse at the 1913 Derby) but called off the protests at the start of world war I.
9. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She died in mysterious circumstances somewhere over the pacific, and it still is not clear whether she has been found as at 2017, and what happened to her plane. She was recently played in the movie "Amelia" by whom?

Answer: Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank not only starred but Executive Produced the movie, which was directed by Mira Nair. The movie was not a critical success but Swank was generally applauded for her performance.
The notion that the Japanese abducted her seems likely to be proved baseless.
10. My last strong woman won the Nobel peace prize for her work in pushing forward women's education in Pakistan. She survived an assassination attempt and has become a powerful speaker and writer for her cause of women's equality. Who is she?

Answer: Malala Yousafzai

Malala is the youngest ever Nobel prize winner at 17. She now lives in the UK and has written books, and been the subject of a movie. July 12 is officially Malala Day, when the UN will try to help us focus on girls' education.
She has fully recovered from the shooting in 2012.
