Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which gemstone is the subject of pernalogy?

Answer: Pearl

Pernalogy is the obscure study of pearls. So obscure, in fact, it merits four Google results! Pearls are considered to be organic gems as they are formed in living animals. The general term for the study of gemstones is gemology. Also I hope some Pokémon fans noticed the pattern. ;)
2. What would an oologist study? I hear they're not afraid of coming out of their shell.

Answer: Birds' eggs

Herpetology is the study concerned with turtles. A carcinologist would study crustaceans, like crabs. If you didn't get it, there's egg on your face! (Don't judge).
3. Nope, not xylophones! What would a xylologist's field be? I hear their bark is worse then their bite.

Answer: Wood

It is a branch (boo) of dendrology, focusing on the structure of wood. Leaves could be studied by a paleobotanist. The study of animal noises is referred to as zoomusicology. The study of grass is called agrostology or graminology.
4. Siphonapterology is the hard-to-spell study of which bug? I hear they like to run away.

Answer: Flea

Myremecology is the study of ants, an example being Fergus O'Rourke. Another name for siphonapterology is pulicology. The study of moths and butterflies is lepidopterology.
5. For the ones with a sweet tooth, melissopalynology, is the study of what delicious foodstuff?

Answer: Honey

Going along nicely with apiology, the study of bees. Someone who studies the effects of candy is an epidemiologist. Other food studies include fromology (cheeses) and nutology (nuts).
6. What is the study of killing?

Answer: Ktenology

Hepaticology is the study of the lovely liverworts and hymenopterology is the oddly specific study of insects with four membranous wings. I made up murderology.
7. Which study does not relate to water?

Answer: Neurypnology

Cetology is the study of whales, ichthyology is the study of fish and kymatology is the study of wave motion. Neurypnology is the study of hypnosis, James Braid being a famous example of such a student.
8. Which of these doesn't relate to the body?

Answer: Sinology

Sinology is the study of China and things Chinese, including Chinese languages and literature. Haemotology is the study of blood, gastrologists study stomaches and sphygmology is the study of the pulse. Other bodily studies include cytology (cells) and allergology (allergies).
9. Which of these does NOT have to do with bugs?

Answer: Cynology

Coleopterology is the study of beetles and weevils, dipterology is a study of two-winged insects and entomology is the study of all insects. Cynology is the study of dogs.
10. Finally, which of these creatively named studies do not exist?

Answer: Mossology

The real name for the study of moss is bryology. I'm sure you can
figure out the rest! Other unoriginal names are angelology, characterology and crystallology.
