2. This Pat had an interesting link with snakes, which he is said to have ejected from Ireland. (I wonder if he also visited New Zealand?) You might say he and his colleague Francis would not have seen eye to eye in their dealings with wildlife.

Answer: St Patrick

St Patrick was born in Britain, (probably Wales), in around 385 A.D. His father was a Roman official, but this didn't save Patrick from being kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland. He escaped, returned home, and dreamed that he was needed back in Ireland.

Therefore he trained to be a priest in France and went back to convert the Irish to Christianity. He was quite successful. However, he didn't have a thing to do with snakes, since there were never any in the Emerald Isle anyway. St Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th.
3. This Pat is a singer of the C&W and pop persuasion. A big hit was "Crazy". The name on the legal stuff was Virginia Patterson Hensley, but this Pat is known to everyone as...?

Answer: Patsy Cline

Virginia Patterson Hensley (Patsy Cline) was born in Winchester, Virginia, in 1932 and died in a plane crash in 1963. She was the first female country/pop crossover singer, and had a hit with "I Fall To Pieces".
4. This Pat is an actor who seems to specialise in "nice-guy" parts. In one long-running series he famously died and then came back to life again... in the shower. He seems to have an affinity with water, as he was also the star of a TV series that gave him webbed hands and an unlikely pedigree.

He married a dancer, and has sons named Padraic and Connor. Patrick's first TV series was "The Man from Atlantis", in 1976. Two years later, he was cast as Bobby Ewing in "Dallas".

Answer: Patrick Pennington

Patrick Pennington first appeared in "Pennington's Seventeenth Summer". In this book, he was known as "Penn". In the second book, "The Beethoven Medal", he was generally known as Pat, as much of the action was seen through his girlfriend, Ruth's, eyes.

He went to prison in this one, but emerged in "Pennington's Heir" to father a son and marry the faithful Ruth. In "Marion's Angels" he appears as a rather quieter character, still with Ruth, still playing the piano, but rousing rather less rabble than before.
6. This Pat appeared in two books written by Jean Webster. In the first book she was attending a boarding school, in the second she was at college. The books are really short stories strung together, but the title character has a certain lively and wayward charm. She is...?

7. This Pat is a famous Australian children's book author. Titles include "The Crooked Snake" and the critically acclaimed "Wirrin" trilogy. (Nothing to do with the Wirrn of "Dr Who".) Pat Gardiner was the main character in "Pat of Silver Bush" and "Mistress Pat". Her creator, L.M. Montgomery, also created Anne Shirley (Blythe) and Emily Byrd Starr. Answer: Pattertwig

Pattertwig is a red squirrel, and appears in "Prince Caspian". He is a chatterbox, but very goodhearted. He gives Prince Caspian a nut to eat. This is typical of C.S. Lewis, who clearly believed in food.
