Piracy existed in the Caribbean for many years, even till the mid 1800s, but after the Golden Era, attacks became less frequent because ships would sail in fleets accompanied by other ships to protect the treasure: in other words, they sailed in convoy.

Henry Morgan was the leader of the Port Royal buccaneers and he was so famous for his attack to Panama and Maracaibo in Venezuela that he was celebrated in songs and ballads. He was made Deputy Governor of Jamaica as a reward for all the money he stole from Spain.

L'Olonnais was also an expert torturer. While in Maracaibo, he noticed most residents had fled and that their gold had been hidden. He tracked down the inhabitants and, using gruesome tortures, forced them to reveal where the gold was hidden. He was called "Bane of the Spanish".
This pirate ended his days when he was captured by the Kuna tribe (in modern Panama) who ate him, taking pieces of his body while he was alive.
