South African Stephen Biko founded the Black Consciousness Movement and was a very active anti-apartheid campaigner. He died in police custody in 1977. He was portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 1987 film Cry Freedom. Peter Gabriel wrote and recorded the song "Biko", released in 1980.
