Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the first names of Queen Liliuokalani's parents?

Answer: Caesar and Analea

Caesar Kapa'akea was born cerca 1815 in Kuiaha, O'ahu, Hawaii. The name Kapa'akea means "the coral or limestone surface" in Hawaiian. Analea Keohokalole was born circa 1816 in Kailua Kona, Hawaiian Island. Keohokalole is Hawaiian for "the straight hair of her own father's tresses." Both of Queen Liliuokalani's parents were related Hawaii's royal house, and, as such, their children were suitable candidates to take over the throne.

Queen Liliuokalani was the Queen of Hawaii from 1891-1893. She succeeded her brother, King David Kalakaua, who died from a stroke. In 1887, Kalakaua had been forced at gunpoint to sign the Bayonet Constitution. This took a lot of power from the Hawaiian monarchy. During her reign, Liliuokalani tried implementing a new constitution to reverse the Bayonet Constitution.
2. What was Queen Liliuokalani's first name?

Answer: Lydia

Her full name at birth was Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha. She was born on September 2, 1838, in Honolulu, O'ahu Hawaiian Kingdom. Liliuokalani is Hawaiian for "the smarting of the royal ones." She was named after the fact when she was born, Elizabeth Kiha'u, a queen regent of Hawaii, had a painful eye infection. Hawaiian parents typically named their children after an incident that occurred around the time of their birth.
3. Of all the monarchs in the Hawaiian kingdom, Liliuokalani was the only queen.

Answer: True

The Hawaiian Kingdom had seven kings before she took the throne. They are in order: King Kamehameha I (1782-1819), King Kamehameha II (1819-1824), King Kamehameha III (1825-1854), King Kamehameha IV (1855-1863), King Kamehameha V (1863-1872), King Lunalio (1873-1874), King Klalakaua (1874-1891) and then Queen Liliuokalani (1891-1893).

She was made the heir presumptive after her youngest brother, W.P. Leleiohoku, passed away.
4. In 1898 Hawaii was annexed by the United States. Why didn't Liliuoklani attend the ceremony?

Answer: She couldn't bear to see the Hawaiian flag lowered.

In 1898 the Spanish-American War started. The United States used Pearl Harbor as a naval base. This strategic planning convinced Congress to annex Hawaii. This was done against Hawaii's wishes, and many natives of Hawaii rebelled. As a result, many were imprisoned, including the queen.

At the ceremony, they took down the Hawaiian flag to put up the Stars and Stripes in its place. Before the United States overthrew her monarchy, she had attended William McKinley's presidential inauguration in 1897.
5. Who was Queen Liliuokalani's husband?

Answer: John Owen Dominis

John Owen Dominis was born on March 10, 1832, in Schenectady, NY. He had two older sisters; both died young while in boarding school. When he was younger, he attended a school his parents ran, which was next to the Royal School for Hawaiian nobility, and he could see and even be friends with the royal children.
Before he was married, he was a mercantile clerk, first in San Francisco, California, and then in Honolulu. This led to his working for the prince.

Dominis and Liliuokalani were married on September 16, 1862. However, it was an unhappy marriage. Liliuokalani couldn't have children, and he had a child with one of her servants. Dominis' mother frowned upon having a non-white woman as her daughter-in-law. Dominis died in 1891 and Liliuokalani adopted Dominis' illegitimate son in 1910.
6. Along with her brother's sister, Liliuokalani represented Hawaii at which British monarch's Golden Jubilee?

Answer: Victoria

In 1887, Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee. The future queen of Hawaii paid tribute to the Queen of England by writing a song called "The Queen's Jubilee." While it's not certain if Queen Victoria heard the song or only received the composition, the music is still performed today. Liliuokalani was welcomed by both Queen Victoria and President Grover Cleveland while in England.
7. Which president of the United States proposed letting Queen Liliuokalani return to the throne?

Answer: Grover Cleveland

Queen Liliuokalani surrendered conditionally and by force. Grover Cleveland, therefore, had an investigation done. As a result of an investigation by James H. Blount, the Blount Report was published, showing that overthrowing Hawaii was illegal. Cleveland's condition for allowing her to return to the throne was that she granted amnesty to everyone responsible.

However, Liliuokalani stated that stealing land from Hawaii was treason and that the people responsible should get the death penalty, which did not make Cleveland happy.
8. While in prison (house arrest), Queen Liliuokalani wrote her autobiography. What was it called?

Answer: Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen

I have seen articles that cite Washington Palace and others that cite Iolani Palace as the place she was under house arrest. Initially, she was sentenced to five years of hard labor, but it was reduced, and she just had to stay locked in an upstairs bedroom in the palace.

"Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen" was published in 1898. It discusses how she was raised, her ascension to the Hawaiian throne, the annexation of Hawaii, how she appealed to the United States, and her imprisonment. It is a primary source of the overthrowing of the Hawaiian monarchy.
9. Which of these songs was composed by Queen Liliuokalani while in prison?

Answer: Ke Aloha O Ka Haku

"Ka Aloha O Ka Haku" is also known as "The Queen's Prayer" and was initially published as "Liliuokalani's Prayer." She dedicated this song to her niece Victoria Kaiulani, heir to the throne. Sadly, Victoria died at age 23 from inflammatory rheumatism in 1899.

The words to the first verse of "Ka Aloha O Ka Haku" are below in Hawaiin and then in English."

"O kou aloha nô
Aia i ka lani
A `o Kou `oia ` i'o
He hemolelo ho'i"

"Your loving mercy
Is as high as Heaven
And your truth
So perfect"
10. In 2017, at the Hawaiian state capital building, what was celebrated regarding Queen Liliuokalani?

Answer: The 100th anniversary of her death

Hundreds of people were at the state capital to celebrate the life of the last monarch of Hawaii. There is a statue of her at the capital building, and feather kahili surrounded that statue on that day. The kahili were long poles with feathers at one end. They were a symbol of Hawaiian royalty. Also, during the centennial, churches all over Hawaii rang their bells 100 times in honor of Liliuokalani.

One woman, a hula dance teacher, described Liluokalani in these words, "She left her people with such hope for the future. She was someone that cared for her people. She left all of her trust to the care of children that are orphaned."
