Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Actress Olivia de Haviland had a sister who was also a famous actress. Name her.

Answer: Joan Fontaine

Both sisters were born in Tokyo, with the family name of de Haviland. They moved to California with their mother after their parents divorced. Olivia was the first to become an actress. When Joan started acting, she invented a different last name, picking Burfield before selecting Fontaine.

The two always had a troubled relationship, which was not helped with both were nominated for the Best Actress Oscar in 1942. Joan won for "Suspicion," and publicly snubbed Olivia's attempt to congratulate her at the ceremony. Joan once said of the sibling rivalry, "I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia did, and if I die first, she'll undoubtedly be livid because I beat her to it!"
2. The Andrews Sisters were a popular singing group in the U.S. in the 1940s. Which of the following was NOT one of the sisters?

Answer: Betty

The sisters were an incredibly popular group, earning $20,000 a week. They also performed on the radio and appeared in 17 Hollywood movies. During the mid 1940s the sisters released eight new singles, six of which became bestsellers; one went gold and another reached platinum status.
3. Anne Boleyn became the second wife of Henry VIII of England. What was the name of her sister, who was Henry's mistress before Anne entered the picture?

Answer: Mary

Mary married William Carey, a gentleman of the royal privy chamber, when he was 24 and she was 12. They lived at court, where Mary became mistress to the king. Her son, Henry, was widely assumed to be the king's son. Henry VIII's inability to have a legitimate son caused him to divorce his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, and wed Mary's sister, Anne. Anne was also unable to provide a male heir, although she did give birth to Elizabeth I before being charged with treason, adultery, incest, and witchcraft.

Mary's life is chronicled in Philippa Gregory's novel, "The Other Boleyn Girl," which was made into film in 2008 starring Scarlett Johansson as Mary and Natalie Portman as Anne.
4. Three 19th century sisters produced the novels "Wuthering Heights," "Jane Eyre," and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall." What was their last name?

Answer: Brontė

Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontė's novels are well established classics. Their family considered their brother, Bramwell, to be the genius. However, he became addicted to alcohol and laudanum, was unable to keep a job, and died of tuberculosis before producing much of note.

In 1848, the sisters self-published a collection of their poetry, which sold only two (!) copies. They used the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell because they were afraid their writing would be dismissed if their gender were known. All three died young: Charlotte at 38, and Emily at 30, and Anne at 29. Emily published only a one book: "Wuthering Heights." Anne published both "Agnes Grey" and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall." Although "Jane Eyre" is her most famous book, Charlotte also published "Shirley," "Villette" and "The Professor."
5. June Havoc was an actress in the 1930s and 40s who had a famous sister, also in the entertainment field. Their childhood was fictionalized in the musical "Gypsy." Name the sister's stage name.

Answer: Gypsy Rose Lee

Their mother, Rose, pushed both sisters to perform in vaudeville. Havoc outshone her sister under the stage name "Baby June." At 15, Havoc ran away to get married and went on to star in "Pal Joey" on Broadway and the movie "Gentleman's Agreement." She last appeared on television in 1990 on "General Hospital."

Lee became a famous burlesque queen and quite wealthy. Her witty strip-tease performances inspired H. L. Mencken to coin the term "ecdysiast".

In 1957, after their mother's death, Lee published "Gypsy" as a memoir of their childhood. The book became the basis of the musical by the same name. Havoc did not like the ways she was portrayed, and the sisters were estranged for many years. Havoc wrote two memoirs herself: "Early Havoc" and "More Havoc."
6. The sisters Vanessa and Lynn have won 2 Oscars, 4 Golden Globe Awards, and 2 Prime-Time Emmies. What is their last name?

Answer: Redgrave

Lynn won Golden Globe Awards for "Georgy Girl" and "Gods and Monsters." She has been nominated for 2 Oscars, 3 Golden Globes, and 1 Prime-Time Emmy. Vanessa has collected more awards. She has been nominated 6 times for an Academy Award, collecting Oscar once, for "Julia." Her 13 Golden Globe nominations have netted 2 awards (for "Julia" and "If These Walls Could Talk 2").

She has 6 Emmy nominations, with 2 wins ("Playing for Time" and "If These Walls Could Talk 2"). In addition, Vanessa won a Tony award for "Long Day's Journey into Night." Their father, Michael Redgrave, and brother, Corin, were also in the profession. Vanessa is the mother of actress Natasha Richardson.
7. In what sport do sisters Venus and Serena Williams compete?

Answer: Tennis

Both Venus and Serena are considered among the greatest tennis players of all time. The sisters started playing at a young age and are still coached by their father, Richard Williams. Venus was ranked #1 in the world for the first time in February, 2002, becoming the first American black woman to achieve this feat in modern times. Serena became #1 in June, 2002, and by 2013 had regained that ranking six times. She is the only woman to have won more than $50 million in prize money.

Venus has won 7 Grand Slam singles titles and 22 overall. Serena tops her with 17 singles titles and 32 overall. When the two play together, they are literally unbeatable: the two are undefeated in doubles Grand Slam finals.
8. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are twin actresses who have founded their own fashion line. What TV role(s) made them rich and famous?

Answer: Michelle Tanner

Mary-Kate and Ashley filmed 191 episodes of "Full House." They alternated playing the role of Michelle Tanner to meet child labor laws on how many hours child actors can work.

The sisters are also into fashion. They have a clothing line for girls (available at Wal-Mart) as well as a couture fashion label, "The Row", a collection called Elizabeth & James, a clothing line for J.C. Penney called "Olsenboye", and a t-shirt line called "StyleMint".
9. What hard rock band features sisters Ann Wilson (lead singer) and Nancy Wilson (guitarist)?

Answer: Heart

The Dixie Chicks are a country band composed of sisters Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison and lead singer Natalie Maines. Their 2007 album "Taking the Long Way" won 5 Grammy Awards. However, the band may be more famous for saying they were embarrassed that George W. Bush was from Texas - leading many Americans to boycott their music.
10. Twin sisters Pauline Phillips and Esther Lederer ended up practicing the same, somewhat unusual, career. How are they better known?

Answer: Advice columnists Abigail Van Buren and Ann Landers

The women were christened Pauline Esther and Esther Pauline Friedman. Phillips and Lederer are their married names. (They were married in a double ceremony with identical dresses and veils.)

In 1955 Lederer got the job of writing the existing Ann Landers column, which was then syndicated to 30 newspapers. Three months later, Phillips applied to the "San Francisco Chronicle" to write her own advice column. She chose first name Abigail from the Bible and Van Buren after the 8th President. "Dear Abby" became the most widely syndicated column in the nation.

The Ann Landers column ended with Lederer's death. Phillip's daughter, Jeanne, began helping write her mother's "Dear Abby" columns in 1987 and took over as the sole author in 2002.
