Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For whom did King Edward VIII abdicate the throne of England?

Answer: Mrs. Simpson

After changing her name back to Wallis Warfield, the former Mrs. Simpson wed Edward on June 3, 1937. She wasn't officially welcomed into the Royal Family until the 1960's, however.
2. What was the name of Helen of Troy's true love?

Answer: Paris

'The face that launched a thousand ships', beautiful Helen fell in love with Paris despite the objections of her plotting husband, Menelaus. She eloped from Sparta with Paris (on the other hand, some storytellers of Greek mythology saw it as an abduction).
3. Everyone knows the story of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet.' What was Juliet's last name?

Answer: Capulet

Juliet Capulet sounds kind of funny, I know. Montague was Romeo's last name, while Tybalt and Benvolio were other characters in the tale.
4. Shakespeare: who was Oberon's better half in the famous comedy 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'?

Answer: Titania

King of the Fairies, Oberon had fun manipulating events in the life of his queen, as well as the mere mortals in the story, but to quote another Shakespeare play, 'All's well that ends well.'
5. Famous poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning eloped over the objections of her father. To what country did they flee for 15 years to work on their poems in peace?

Answer: Italy

The two lived and worked there until Elizabeth's death in 1861. Browning then returned to England where he continued to produce poems inspired by their love, until his own death in 1889.
6. Cleopatra and Mark Anthony had a scandalous love affair. Were they ever married?

Answer: Yes

The couple were married in 36 BC according to the writing of Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus in "The Twelve Caesars", even though Antony was already married to Octavia at that time. They had planned to conquer Rome, but their efforts were thwarted. Hearing a false report that Cleopatra was dead, Mark Anthony fell on his sword. She in turn allowed an asp to seal her fate.
7. In which of the following films did famous couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall NOT star together?

Answer: 'Casablanca'

Bogart starred with Ingrid Bergman in that 1942 classic. Along with the aforementioned films, Bogart appeared with his true love, Bacall in 1947's 'Dark Passage.'
8. How many times was Elizabeth Taylor married to on-and-off soul mate Richard Burton?

Answer: Twice

The first time was in 1964, and the second in 1975. The second time wasn't a charm, however. They were divorced the following year. Taylor's other husbands included Nicky Hilton, Michael Wilding, Mike Todd, Eddie Fisher, John Warner and Larry Fortensky.
9. How did Heloise's Uncle Fulbert punish her lover Abelard, once he discovered the two had secretly married and conceived a child?

Answer: He had him castrated

Ouch! An alternative story suggests that Fulbert ordered the castration because he believed that Abelard had abandoned his niece. The philosopher Abelard appropriately became a monk, while Heloise was sent to a convent and became a nun. The two continued to share now-famous love letters.
10. I am a world famous monument commissioned by a grieving ruler to honour his beloved wife, who'd just died. What am I?

Answer: The Taj Mahal

Commissioned by Mughal ruler Shah Jahan in the 1600's just after the death of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the stunning building took more than 20 years to complete.
11. I'm sure you're familiar with the story of Tarzan and Jane, the man raised by apes and the woman who loved him. Who originally wrote these classic tales?

Answer: Edgar Rice Burroughs

Burroughs wrote more than two dozen novels involving the apeman. Eventually, his stories brought the couple together in marriage and parenthood.
12. Marie and Pierre Curie were one those rare couples who shared a great love affair AND a professional relationship. What two elements were they famous for discovering?

Answer: Radium and polonium

They shared the Nobel prize for their work with radiation. If you were wondering, selenium was discovered by Jons Berzelius in 1817. Uranium was discovered by Martin Klaproth in 1789.
13. 'Gone With The Wind's' Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler are perhaps film's most famous pair of star-crossed lovers. Which of the following is NOT a well-known line from the movie?

Answer: 'I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.'

Though the characters of Scarlett and Rhett were romantically ill-fated, they remain a fictional legend of love. By the way, the other line was from 'A Streetcar Named Desire.'
14. Which of the following men was NOT one of Marilyn Monroe's husbands?

Answer: Yves Montand

Montand was a French actor who starred with her in the 1960's film 'Let's Make Love'. Despite a troubled marriage, Joe DiMaggio claimed Marilyn was the great love of his life, and allegedly sent roses to her grave every week until his own death.
15. Infamous crime-spreading lovers Bonnie and Clyde were actually a real-life couple.

Answer: True

Born Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the couple were in and out of jail for years until police caught up with them for good in 1934, killing them both. Parker's mother would not allow her daughter's body to be buried next to that of her beloved Clyde. Hope you had fun with this look back at famous couples!
