Josephine and her first husband were aristocrats who had been imprisoned during the French Revolution. Her husband was executed but she managed to be freed. After their marriage, Napoleon and Josephine had numerous affairs but still loved each other by all accounts.

Her romance with the prince was prime celebrity gossip for time and rumors swirled that she intended to divorce Simpson and marry the prince.
