Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Replaced Bon Scott as vocalist in AC/DC.

Answer: Brian

Brian Johnson had experienced minor success with the band Geordie, who reached number six on UK charts in 1973 with "All Because of You", but this was nothing like the success he would have with AC/DC.
His first album with the band was "Back in Black" (1980) which sold over 22 million copies in USA alone and remained on the Billboard 200 charts for 131 weeks.
Johnson has also appeared as a guest vocalist on "The Last Ship", a 2013 album by fellow northeast of England musician, Sting.
2. Literary critic who wrote "A Dictionary of the English Language" in 1755 .

Answer: Samuel

Samuel Johnson, often better known as Dr. Johnson made a huge contribution to the English language with his dictionary which took him nine years to complete and would remain the leading dictionary until the publication of the "Oxford English Dictionary" 173 years later, in 1928. Johnson managed to combine the gravity of a dictionary with his own wit, for example the entry for the word "take" had 134 definitions, while possibly his most well known definition was for the word "oats", the entry for which read, "a grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people".
3. Actress, starred in "The Color Purple" (1985) and "Ghost" (1990).

Answer: Caryn

Caryn Johnson is of course better known as Whoopi Goldberg, who in 1991 became just the second black actress to win an acting Oscar, for her role as Oda Mae Brown in "Ghost" (1990).
She is also one of a handful of performers to be a member of the "EGOT club", having won an Emmy award for TV work, a Grammy award for a sound recording and a Tony award for theatre work in addition to her Oscar.
She has also written a series of children's books about the Sugar Plum Ballerinas, beginning with "Plum Fantastic" in 2008.
4. Winner of golf's Open Championship in 2015.

Answer: Zach

Johnson started playing golf aged ten and by 1998, aged 22 turned professional. He won his first PGA tour event in 2004 when he beat Mark Hensby by one stroke in the BellSouth Classic and in 2007, he gained wider attention when he won the Masters Tournament in Augusta, beating Tiger Woods by two shots. Solid results in PGA tour events followed, along with making the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup team, and in 2015 he added a second major to his Masters win when he beat Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman in a four hole playoff to win the Open Championship, becoming only the sixth golfer in history to win majors at Augusta and St. Andrews.
5. Replaced Theresa May as UK prime minister in July 2019.

Answer: Boris

In 2019, New York City born Boris became only the second ever UK prime minister to be born outside the British Isles, the other being Bonar Law, who was PM between 1922 and 1923 and born in what was then the British colony of New Brunswick. Johnson entered politics in 2001 when he was elected as MP for Henley, a post he held for seven years until 2008, when he was elected Mayor of London. Following his tenure as Mayor, he served as Foreign Secretary in Theresa May's government until July 2018, when he resigned over her Brexit strategy, a strategy which would eventually become her downfall, leading to her resignation in June 2019.
6. Made his movie acting debut playing The Scorpion King in "The Mummy Returns" (2001).

Answer: Dwayne

It would seem that Johnson was always destined for the limelight in one way or another. He won a national championship playing college football for University of Miami in 1991, which led to him signing with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL), but this didn't work out. He then turned his hand to wrestling, which worked out quite well for him with his alter ego as The Rock.
As The Rock, he was a ten time world champion as well as headlining the most bought professional wrestling pay-per-view event, WrestleMania XXVIII in 2012, by which time he was already well known as an actor, having appeared in "Be Cool" (2005) alongside John Travolta and Uma Thurman as well as starring in "Tooth Fairy" (2010) and alongside Billy Bob Thornton in "Faster" (2010).
Later movie roles include the part of Luke Hobbs in The Fast and the Furious franchise, the title role in "Hercules" (2014) and surely the pinnacle of any actor's career, playing the role originally made famous by David Hasselhoff, of Mitch Buchannon in the remake of "Baywatch" in 2017.
7. American restaurants and motel entrepreneur.

Answer: Howard

Howard Deering Johnson started his business career working in and eventually taking over his father's cigar shop, but this venture ended in failure leaving him with huge debts. In order to pay off the debts he entered the restaurant business in 1925, buying a soda and ice cream shop which was so successful that he opened another store and expanded the menu to include fried chicken and hamburgers.
By 1954, there were 400 Howard Johnson's restaurants in USA and the company opened its first motel the same year in Savannah, Georgia and by 1961 there were 605 restaurants and 88 motels in the empire.
Howard Johnson died in 1972 and although the company had by 1975 expanded to over 1,000 restaurants and over 500 motels in USA and Canada, the oil embargo of 1974 crippled the company, leading to its eventual demise as people could no longer afford long road trips.
8. Former lead vocalist with Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Answer: Holly

For a while in the mid to late 80s, Holly Johnson was the darling of the UK music scene as his band, Frankie Goes to Hollywood became only the second band ever, after Gerry and the Pacemakers, to have their first three singles hit number one in UK charts.
Their fourth single, after "Relax" (1983), "Two Tribes" (1984) and "The Power of Love" (1984) was "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" (1985) which peaked at number two, but by 1987, the band had imploded, allowing Johnson to pursue a solo career.
By 1989, he was back in the charts as two singles, "Love Train" and "Americanos" both hit number four, but since then chart success hasn't been forthcoming and he has pursued his other love as a painter, having his creations displayed at both the Tate Liverpool and the Royal Academy.
9. Former U.S. president

Answer: Andrew

Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of USA, serving between 1865 and 1869, moving up from vice-president following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He is generally viewed as one of the worst men to have held the office, due to his pro slavery views and white supremacist stance, quoted as saying in 1866, "This is a country for white men, and by God, as long as I am President, it shall be a government for white men." He also openly opposed the 14th Amendment and vetoed the Civil Rights Bill and was impeached in 1868 for intentionally violating the Tenure of Office Act, surviving impeachment by just one vote.
10. Former First Lady of the United States.

Answer: Lady Bird

Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson was wife to the 36th President of USA, Lyndon B. Johnson, serving between 1963 and 1969.
She is well remembered for her work on the Highway Beautification Act of 1965, also known as "Lady Bird's Bill" which encouraged scenic enhancement along major highways with the slogan, "Where flowers bloom, so does hope", and in 1968, Columbia Island, in Washington, D.C., was renamed Lady Bird Johnson Park to honour her efforts to beautify the capital.
