Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which George was said to have secretly married a Quakeress whilst Prince of Wales, having three children with her, which, if true, would mean that all British monarchs since have been usurpers?

Answer: George III

It is alleged that on April 17th 1759, George III married Hannah Lightfoot, the daughter of a shoemaker. Documents bearing witness to this marriage were impounded in 1866 and lodged in the Royal Archives at Windsor. If the marriage did in fact take place, then the rightful heirs to the throne would have been the issue of that union, and not his children with Queen Charlotte.
2. This King kept two very different, but ungainly, mistresses. One was nicknamed "The Elephant" and the other "The Maypole". Which George was he?

Answer: George I

When George arrived in England in 1714 he brought with him a retinue of secretaries and attendants, as well two of the ugliest mistresses ever to be seen in Court! Sophia von Kilmansegg, a rather large lady, soon became known as "The Elephant", and tall, thin Ermengarda Melusina von Schulenburg was "The Maypole. Having divorced his wife, Sophia Dorothea, in 1694 on the grounds of her adultery he kept her imprisoned in a castle in Germany for the rest of her life.
3. Which King did not live to celebrate his Silver Jubilee?

Answer: George IV

Having been Regent for 10 years prior to his father's death, George IV then went on to reign for a further 10 years. George II reigned for 33 years, George III for 60 years and George V for 26 years.
4. Who was the last English Monarch to have been born abroad?

Answer: George II

Baptised George Augustus, George II was born in Hanover in 1683, only being naturalised as a British subject in 1705. He was the last king to be buried in Westminster Abbey.
5. Which George was responsible for the transformation of the famous Brighton Pavilion?

Answer: George IV

Whilst Prince Regent, George spent quite some time in the old seaside town of Brighthelmstone. The Pavilion, originally purchased as a small farmhouse for his secret wife (Mrs FitzHerbert), evolved over a period of 35 years, during which time Henry Holland, William Porden and John Nash worked on the building.
6. Who was baptised Albert Frederick Arthur George?

Answer: George VI

Known as 'Bertie' to his family and friends, on his accession to the throne George VI chose to take his father's name, rather than use the more Germanic sounding 'Albert'.
7. Which George was the last British Monarch to lead his troops into battle?

Answer: George II

Although unpopular, George was a brave King, leading a joint army of Hanoverian, British, Hessians, Austrians and Dutch against the French at Dettingen in 1743 at the age of 60.
8. Which George, not expecting to become king, spent his early years in the Royal Navy, becoming heir apparent on the untimely death of his elder brother?

Answer: George V

When his brother 'Eddy' (Prince Albert Victor) died from pneumonia in 1892 George knew that his nautical career was over. Upon Eddy's death Queen Victoria decided that George should inherit his brother's fiancee, Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, and 18 months later saw the start of a very successful marriage.
9. Which king wrote pamphlets on the improvements in agriculture under the pen name of Ralph Robinson?

Answer: George III

Early on in his reign George cultivated an interest in agriculture and was known to tour farms in the south of England. His obvious interest and numerous conversations with the farming communities earned him the nickname 'Farmer George'.
10. Having stood witness to his brother's 'Instrument of Abdication', this shy man was propelled into the spotlight as which king?

Answer: George VI

Like his father before him, George VI had not expected to be King and started a career in the Royal Navy. He eventually left to join the Air Force and qualified as a pilot.
