Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Idea for novel or film: Ventriloquist is murdered. His spirit enters his puppet, making it an evil doll that seeks vengeance... Nah! It wouldn't work. Anyway, all four of these ventriloquists are now with the Great Puppet Master in the Clouds. Which one got there first?

Answer: Edgar Bergen (with Charlie McCarthy)

Edgar Bergen (father of Candice Bergen) died on September 30, 1978. Fran Allison passed away on June 13, 1989. Shari Lewis (one of my favorites growing up) left us on August 2, 1998. Finally, Paul Winchell said his final farewell on June 24, 2005. And he said it without moving his lips .
2. Booze, cigarettes, singing, kibbitzing... It must be The Rat Pack! Now, they're all worm food. But who died first, baby?

Answer: Peter Lawford

Peter Lawford, the only member of The Rat Pack not born in the United States, died in 1984. Throat cancer took Sammy Davis, Jr. in 1990. Dean Martin sang "That's Amore" for the last time, metaphorically speaking, in 1995. And Ol' Blue Eyes scobby-doo-bee-doo-bee'd outta here in 1998.
3. Okay, you kids! Play nice! It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt! Or dead. All four of these men died due to... All right, I know... They were tragedies... But to die prematurely because they were being... Darn it! There's no respectful or nice way to put it! They were being STUPID! But who went first?

Answer: Terri Kath (member of the band Chicago)

Oh, here's a good idea. Let's go to a party at a roadie's house, and then go to my place with some friends and I'll show off my pistols. "Look, this one ain't loaded. I'll just put it to my head and..." BANG! So died Terry Kath on January 23, 1978. Okay, even better--"I should be in rehab but instead I'm drunk. And I think that some of my possessions are down there in the marina. I'll just dive off and get them and... Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle." Beach Boy Dennis Wilson drowned near a beach on December 28, 1983. "Oh, I don't need to be able to see the gas gauge on this little ol' plane. I can fly for miles and..." John Denver's little ol' plane ran out of gas on October 12, 1997. Warned by authorities to not play football WHILE SKIING, Michael Kennedy skied smack into a tree on New Year's Eve, 1999.

The tree survived. If I sound angry about these tragedies, it's because I am. They were all promising, talented men, and they ended their lives so needlessly and foolishly.
4. Which was your favorite Odd Couple? Randall and Klugman or Lemmon and Matthau? Everyone has their own strong opinion on the matter. It didn't matter to The Reaper, though--he took them all. Which one did he take first?

Answer: Walter Matthau

Walter Matthau, the only New Yorker in the bunch, died on July 1, 2000. His co-star, Jack Lemmon, died just under a year later, on June 27, 2001. TV's Felix Unger, Tony Randall, died on May 17, 2004. His partner, cigar-chomping, Jack Klugman, whom I'd seen many times at Belmont Racetrack, died on Christmas Eve 2012. Oscar, Oscar, Oscar...
5. From the cradle to the grave, we have our heroes. Our first heroes were probably those televised to us through their children's shows. Let's see there was: Mr. Rogers; Buffalo Bob Smith from "The Howdy Doody Show"; Soupy Sales; and Captain Kangaroo. From the cradle to the grave... Who completed the journey first?

Answer: Buffalo Bob Smith

Bufflo Bob, real name Robert Emil Schmidt, rode that happy trail for the last time in 1998. Fred Rogers hung up his wonderful red sweater for the last time in 2003. Captain Kangaroo, real name Robert Keeshan, hopped outta here in 2004. Soupy Sales, real name Milton Supman, took the last cream pie in the face in 2009. Thanks for making this little kid happy way back when.
6. "I'm not a real doctor. I just play one on T.V." All four of these actors, who played doctors on T.V., could not cure themselves. But which one coded out first?

Answer: Vince Edwards, who played Dr. Ben Casey

Is there a doctor in the house? Nope. This one was a tough one. Actor Vince Edwards died on July 11, 1998. Ten days later, veteran actor Robert Young, who battled with alcoholism and depression, died on July 21, 1998. "I'm dead, Jim"; DeForest Kelley went to the Final final frontier less than a year later on June 11, 1999. Chad Everett lasted the longest, dying on July 24, 2012. Beep-boop-beep-boop-beeeeeeep! Flat line! Code Blue! Code Blue! Beeeeeeeep...
7. If you're eating pea soup, you might want to skip this question and go on to the next. The movie "The Exorcist" was believed to have been cursed. Bad things happened, on the set and off the set, including the death of one of its actors from the London Flu epidemic before the movie was even released. Do you know which of these actors died first?

Answer: Jack MacGowran (who played director Burke Dennings)

Irish actor, Jack MacGowran, died on January 31, 1973, nearly a year before the movie's release. Famed actor Lee J. Cobb died on February 11, 1976. Jason Miller, who was also a respected playwright, died on May 13, 2001. Mercedes McCambridge, whose voice of the demon was created by chain-smoking and eating raw eggs, died on March 2, 2004. I hope they all avoided the Evil One and went upward.
8. Sometimes Mr. Death reaps his own form of justice. These four serial killers were taken by him at relatively young ages. Which one went first?

Answer: Albert DeSalvo (The Boston Strangler)

Albert DeSalvo was stabbed to death in prison in 1973. He was 42. (It is interesting to note that he was never convicted of the murders--he plea bargained. Some believe the real killer got away and may still be at large.) Ted Bundy, who confessed to 30 murders, was sent to the electric chair in 1989.

He was 43. John Wayne Gacy, convicted of 33 murders, was executed on May 10, 1994. He was 52. The last and oldest to go was Richard Ramirez, who murdered 14 people. He died of lymphoma and liver disease complications in 2013, at 53 years old. Now if only The Reaper would have visited these guys BEFORE they murdered...
9. Raphael! Donatello! Leonardo! Michelangelo! No, not you ninja, mutant reptiles. I mean the real ones from the Italian Renaissance. Those four guys sure did some good stuff that immortalized them in the art world of the Western Hemisphere. But they were mortal. Which one said "Ciao. Arrivederci." first?

Answer: Donatello (Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi)

Donatello, the sculptor, was active during the earlier years of the Italian Renaissance. He died in 1466. Leonardo da Vinci said arrivederci in 1519. Less than a year later, Raphael died in 1520. Michelangelo was last to go in 1564. As for those turtle guys, hold the anchovies!
10. Several of Rock and Roll's pioneers from the 1950s didn't live to see the 1990s. In fact, all four of these rockers died before 1990. Which one rocked out first?

Answer: Elvis Presley

The King put down his crown and died in the throne room, so to speak, on August 16, 1977. Bill Haley's rocking around the clock ran out of time on February 9, 1981. Carl Perkins kicked the bucket in his blue suede shoes on January 19, 1986. Whether or not Roy Orbison ever met his pretty woman, I don't know. But he left her behind on December 6, 1988.
