Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (1900-1949) had only one novel published in her lifetime. That novel happened to be the American Civil War classic "Gone with the Wind" (1936). Because of this novel in 1936 she won the National Book Award and in 1937 the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. During the 1920s she had worked as a journalist for The Atlanta Journal writing 129 feature article, 85 news stories and a number of book reviews.
The novel of 1936 was adapted to the big screen in 1939 with the same name starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland and Hattie McDaniel.
At the 12th Academy Awards the movie received 13 Academy Award nominations, winning eight.
