Paul McCartney is well-known for his distinctive left-handed playing style. After the Beatles broke up he formed the group Wings. The group had many hits including the theme music to the James Bond film 'Live and Let Die' in 1973, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. Sir Paul McCartney was knighted in 1997.

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is left-handed too. Other famous left-handed guitarists include the late Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain from Nirvana.

Charlie Chaplin was born in London in 1889 to parents who were both music hall entertainers at the time. It was a childhood of hardship and poverty, some of which was spent in a workhouse. He had an early ambition to be an actor and toured with a vaudeville comedy troupe in England and in North America, where he was to live for several years, before breaking into films.

His first film role was a Keystone Kops film from 1914, 'Making a Living'. His 'Little Tramp' character first appeared in 'Kid Auto Races at Venice', another Keystone comedy. It was a much-loved character which he was to reprise in 'The Gold Rush' in 1925. Sir Charles Chaplin was knighted in 1975 and died in Switzerland, where had lived since 1953, on Christmas Day, 1977.

Goran Ivanisevic set Wimbledon alight with his Centre Court performance in the Men's Final of 2001 against popular Australian Patrick Rafter. Rain delays had meant the match was played on the Monday rather than the usual Sunday, and it is often mentioned as one of Wimbledon's greatest matches. Ivanisevic's thrilling 9-7 victory in the final set made him the first wildcard player in history to win the tournament.

Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on 4 August 1961. He was inaugurated for his first term as President on 20 January 2009 and became the USA's eighth left-handed President, after James A Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He secured his second term as President on 6 November 2012, beating Republican rival Mitt Romney. President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of English writer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898). 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was first published in 1865 and has been in print ever since. Its sequel 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There', generally shortened to 'Through the Looking-Glass', was first printed in 1871 and includes the much-loved 'nonsense' poem 'Jabberwocky'. Prince William became a helicopter pilot with the Search and Rescue Force of the RAF in 2010. He and his father, Prince Charles, are both left-handed. Several of their ancestors were left-handed too, including the late HM The Queen Mother and Queen Victoria, also Kings Edward III and VIII and Kings George II, IV and VI. Of these, all were naturally left-handed except King Edward III, who switched to using his left hand in later life following a stroke.

Whilst creator Matt Groening used the names of several family members for his characters, Bart was not one of them; his name is actually an anagram of the word 'brat'. Bart Simpson, depicted by Matt Groening as left-handed, is the eldest child of Homer and Marge Simpson, and has two younger sisters, Lisa and baby Maggie. He attends Springfield Elementary School, under the watchful eyes of Principal Skinner and his teacher, Mrs Krabappel. Well-known psychic Uri Geller was born in Tel Aviv in 1946. He first found fame in the 1970s and was featured on television shows across the world demonstrating his unusual skills. He has been a frequent chat show guest in many countries and has also hosted several TV shows.

In 2002 he won admiration with his performance on British reality programme 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!' for taking part in challenges including eating witchetty grubs and other creepy creatures despite following a strict vegan diet.

He said afterwards he had found it difficult, but had done it for the good of the team.

Surprisingly, Phil Mickelson is right-handed apart from when playing golf, as it was the way he learned the game when he started at a young age. He turned pro in 1992 and won his first major championship at the Masters in 2004. When he played for America in the Ryder Cup in 2012 for the ninth time he broke the previous record of eight Ryder Cup appearances for the American team, although Nick Faldo, playing for the European team, holds the world record of eleven appearances as of 2012.

Sir Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace in 1874, the grandson of the 7th Duke of Marlborough. A former Army officer and war correspondent, he is best remembered for his inspirational leadership of the UK as its Prime Minister during World War II. His first term as Prime Minister was from 1940-1945. After the War, losing office in the 1945 General Election to Labour's Clement Attlee, he served as Leader of the Opposition until being elected to serve a second term as Prime Minster from 1951 to 1955.

Sir Winston Churchill was interested in art and enjoyed painting. He was also renowned for his wit and his wise and inspiring quotations. He died in January 1965, aged 90, at his home in London following a stroke he had suffered a few days previously. His Kent home, Chartwell, is now the property of the National Trust, and is open to the public.
