Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with what should be an easy one: Who is described in the Old Testament as the mother of all living? (Genesis 3:20)

Answer: Eve

Eve, of course, is described as the mother of all living. According to Genesis 3:20 she was given the name by Adam. They were the parents of Cain, Abel and Seth as well as other sons and daughters, as per Genesis 5:4. However, Scripture does not state how many children Eve had.

It could have been a large number, because Adam lived to be 930 years old, according to Genesis 5:5. Scripture does not indicate how old Eve was when she died.
2. Out of the four names below, which person was originally known as Hadassah?

Answer: Esther

Esther's original name was Hadassah and she was raised by her cousin Mordecai, as per Esther 2:7. The verse states Esther's parents died, but no details are given as to the cause of their deaths. Hadassah was her Hebrew name, but after she became part of the harem of the king of Persia, she became known as Esther.

Esther, of course, would go on to become queen and play a pivotal role in derailing a diabolical scheme by Haman to exterminate the Jewish population in the vast area ruled by the man who is known as King Ahasuerus in the NKJV and King Xerxes in the NIV.
3. According to Ruth 1:2, who was the husband of Naomi?

Answer: Elimelech

Elimelech was the husband of Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth. However, not much is known about Elimelech as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to Scripture, he died, leaving Naomi a widow, while his two sons also died, leaving Ruth and Orpah widows.

The sons were named Mahlon and Chilion, according to Ruth 1:2. (In the NIV, Chilion's name appears as Kilion.) However, Scripture does not give any details about the cause of deaths of Elimelech and his two sons.
4. What was the name of Samuel's father, as per 1 Samuel 1:19?

Answer: Elkanah

The correct answer is Elkanah. According to 1 Samuel 1:1 he was the son of of Jeroham and lived in Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim. Verse 2 states Elkanah had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. For the longest time, Hannah was unable to conceive while 1 Samuel 1:4 states Peniniah was the mother of sons and daughters.

Elkanah was devout as Scripture tells of him going annually to "worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh."
5. Who was the high priest who played a prominent role in the life of Joshua? (Joshua 14:1)

Answer: Eleazar

Eleazar, the son of Aaron and a nephew of Moses, was the high priest who was connected with Joshua. According to Scripture, he ascended to the position after the death of his father.

Leviticus 10 tells of Elezar's brothers being struck dead for offering "profane fire" to the LORD with Eleazar and his brother Ithamar being named as their replacements. Numbers 20:28 tells of Aaron dying and Moses putting the priestly garments on Eleazar. Joshua 14 goes on to tell of Joshua and Eleazar dividing up tracts of land in Canaan for the twelve tribes. The deaths of both Joshua and Eleazar are recorded in Joshua 24.
6. Out of the four options below, which man was married to Tamar and put to death by God because of his wickedness? (Genesis 38:6)

Answer: Er

Er is the correct answer. However, little in the way of details are given about the man and why he was put to death. He was the first-born son of Judah and his wife was Tamar. Genesis 38:6-7, in the NKJV, states: "Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD killed him." Er and Tamar did not have any children.

The 38th chapter of Genesis goes on to tell of Er's younger brother Onan being put to death by the LORD as well.
7. What prophet of God whose name starts with the letter 'E' is associated with a valley filled with dry bones?

Answer: Ezekiel

The prophet Ezekiel wrote about a valley filled with dry bones, as per Ezekiel 37:1-14.

According to Scripture, Ezekiel visited the valley while "in the spirit of the LORD". Scripture goes on to state the LORD told Ezekiel to "prophesy to the bones" and eventually they came to life.

Scripture goes on to state the bones are representative of "the whole house of Israel."
8. What left-handed judge of Israel killed an obese king by plunging a dagger in his "very fat" belly? (Judges 3:17)

Answer: Ehud

Ehud, described as a "deliverer" from God, is the correct answer, as per Judges 3:17. According to Scripture, Ehud was a left-handed judge of Israel who killed Eglon, described as a "very fat" king of Moab.

Scripture goes into some gory details about the king's death with Judges 3:20-22 telling of Ehud meeting privately with Eglon and then taking his left hand to draw a dagger from his right thigh. Ehud plunged the dagger all the way into Eglon's stomach with Scripture stating "even the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade" and the entrails came out.

The chapter goes on to tell of Ehud making his escape and then leading the Israelites to a military victory over the Moabites, killing about 10,000 "stout men of valor." The chapter concludes by stating the Israelites enjoyed eighty years of "rest".
9. According to Scripture, Baal was a god of the Canaanites. However, Saul, the first king of Israel, had a son named Esh-Baal.

Answer: True

Saul, the first king of Israel, had a son named Esh-Baal, as per 1 Chronicles 8:33. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Esh-Baal was Saul's youngest son and is known as Ishobosheth elsewhere in the Old Testament. The notes also state the naming of a son Esh-Baal shows how far removed Saul had become from the LORD.

After Saul's death, Ishobsheth became king, but things did not go smoothly at all as Israel quickly became embroiled in a bloody civil war. One part of the country wanted Ishbosheth, or Esh-Baal, as king while the other part wanted David. According to Scripture, Ishobsheth was assassinated and David rose to become king of a united Israel.

In the NIV, Ishbosheth is known as Ishbo-Sheth.
10. Out of the four names below, which one wrote a book in the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament of the Christian Bible) telling of Israelite captives receiving permission to leave Babylon and return to Jerusalem?

Answer: Ezra

Ezra is the correct answer. Tradition holds Ezra not only wrote the book that bears his name, but also the books First and Second Chronicles and Nehemiah. Some modern day theologians dispute the fact, however.

The book of Ezra tells of the return of two groups of exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem as well as the rebuilding of the temple and the dissolution of mixed marriages among the Israelites.
11. According to Genesis 15:2, Abraham had a servant who came from Damascus and had a name that started with the letter 'E'. What was the servant's name?

Answer: Eliezer

Eliezer came from Damascus, as per Genesis 15:2. However, little is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. Many theologians believe Eliezer was the unnamed senior servant who found a wife for Isaac. In Genesis 24, the unnamed servant is requested by Abraham to go to the land of his relatives to get a wife for his son. The servant's expedition ended with the selection of Rebekah as Isaac's wife.
12. What high priest of Israel had two sons who are described as "corrupt" in the NKJV and as "scoundrels" in the NIV, and had sexual relations with the women who served at the entrance of the tabernacle of meeting? (1 Samuel 2.)

Answer: Eli

Eli is the correct answer. His sons Hophni and Phinehas were out of control and simply refused to listen to him. 1 Samuel 2 tells of the sons disobeying sacred protocol when people came to the tabernacle of meeting to offer a sacrifice.

Verse 22 in the same chapter tells of the men having sexual relations with the women "who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting."

The chapter goes on to tell of an unnamed man of God telling Eli his two sons would be killed through divine retribution.
13. As per Genesis 25:29-34, what son of Isaac sold his birthright to Jacob for a pot of stew?

Answer: Esau

Esau, according to Scripture, sold his birthright for a pot of stew to his slightly younger twin brother, Jacob. Details can be found in Genesis 25:29-34.
Later, Jacob would deceive his elderly father Isaac and obtain the blessing intended for Esau.
14. Out of the four names below starting with the letter 'E', which one was a king of Israel who was assassinated in the second year of his reign? (1 Kings 16:8-10)

Answer: Elah

Elah, the son of Baasha, is the correct answer, as per 1 Kings 16:8-10. According to Scripture, Elah was assassinated by Zimri, commander of half of his chariots. Scripture states Elah was in Tirzah "drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza" when Zimri struck Elah, killing him. Elah had reigned two years.

Scripture goes on to tell of Zimri going on a ruthless killing spree, executing all in Baasha's family as well as Baasha's friends.
15. According to 1 Kings 19:11-16, what prophet of God heard a "still small voice" after he experienced a major wind storm, followed by an earthquake, followed by a massive fire?

Answer: Elijah

After experiencing a major wind storm, an earthquake and fire, Scripture says Elijah heard "a still small voice". The voice was that of God giving Elijah divine instructions. One of the instructions was to anoint Elisha as a prophet to replace himself. Details can be found in 1 Kings 19:11-16.

Incidentally, the wind in 1 Kings 19:12 is described as being "great" and "strong". It was that and very much more, as Scripture says the wind was so powerful it "tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces". No details are given in Scripture about the intensity of the earthquake and the fire. One can only imagine.
16. According to the 13th chapter of 2 Kings, a dead body was put in in the tomb of a prophet and as soon as it touched the hallowed remains of the prophet the man was revived and stood on his feet again. What was the name of the prophet?

Answer: Elisha

The miraculous revival of the dead man is nothing short of amazing, but Scripture is extremely short on details. The miracle is summed up in two verses, 2 Kings 13:20-21, and the name of the man brought back to life is not given. According to Scripture, the body was hastily put into Elisha's tomb when a raiding band from Moab was spotted. Scripture simply states that when the man's body touched the bones of Elisha "he revived and stood on his feet." No other details are given.
17. Out of the four options below, which one was a son of Joseph and Asenath? (Genesis 41:52)

Answer: Ephraim

Ephraim is the correct answer. According to Genesis 41:52, Ephraim means "For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction." In other words, Joseph was enjoying immense fruitfulness, this even though he arrived in Egypt as a slave. Not much is known about Ephraim as he is largely mentioned in passing reference. Chapter 48 of Genesis tells of Ephraim being blessed by his grandfather Jacob.
18. Out of the four names below that start with the letter 'E', which one was a member of the early church who was imprisoned with Paul? (Philemon 1:23)

Answer: Epaphras

In Philemon 1:23, Paul describes Epaphras as his "fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus". It is generally believed Paul wrote his letter to Philemon while in prison in Rome, but some modern day theologians have a different view.

In Colossians 1:7-8, Paul also described Epaphras as "our dear fellow servant who is a faithful minister of Christ."
19. According to Scripture, a man whose name starts with the letter 'E' was the son of Cain and the first city that was built was named after him. What was the man's name? (Genesis 5:17-18)

Answer: Enoch

Enoch is the correct answer. According to Genesis 5:17-18, Cain built the first city mentioned in the Bible and named it after his son Enoch. Verse 19 goes on to state Enoch was the father of Irad.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Enoch means 'Dedicated One'.
20. According to 2 Timothy 2:5, Timothy had a mother whose name starts with the letter 'E'. What was her name?

Answer: Eunice

Eunice was the mother of Timothy, a young and timid worker in the early church, according to 2 Timothy 1:5. The same verse states Lois was the mother of Eunice, making her Timothy's grandmother. According to Acts 16:1, Lois was Jewish while her unnamed husband was Greek. They lived in Lystra. In 2 Timothy, Paul praises Timothy, as well as Lois and Euncie, for their "genuine faith."
21. Out of the names below that start with the letter 'E', which one was the mother of John the Baptist? (Luke 1:13)

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist even though she and her husband were both "well advanced in years", according to the first chapter of Luke. Luke 1:5 states Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron. Meanwhile, Luke 1:39-45 tells of Elizabeth meeting with Mary, the teenage girl who, while still a virgin, was pregnant with Jesus. Elizabeth and Mary were relatives and their offspring would change the course of history.
22. According to Philippians 2:25-30, a worker in the early church whose name starts with the letter 'E' came close to death "for the work of Christ." What was the tireless worker's name?

Answer: Epaphroditus

Epaprhoditus was apparently assigned by members of the early church in Philippi to assist Paul in his ministry. Epaphroditus is mentioned in only Philippians 2:25-30, but Paul makes it abundantly apparent he was a highly valued worker in the early church, having no regard for his own life.

Philippians 2:25-30 tells of Epaphroditus becoming sick and almost dying, with God sparing him. In the passage, Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, writes Epaphroditus should be held in esteem.

Philippi, by the way, was the community in which Paul converted Lydia, the seller of purple cloth, and the unnamed jailer to Christianity. According to Scripture, the entire households of Lydia and the jailer were baptized.
23. According to Romans 16:23, the director of public works in Corinth had a name that started with the letter 'E' and was a member of the early church. What was the public works director's name?

Answer: Erastus

Not much is known about Erastus apart from the fact he is described by Paul in Romans as the city's director of public works. (Paul was in Corinth when he wrote Romans.) The name Erastus also appears in Acts 19:22 and in 2 Timothy 4:20, but theologians suspect it might not be the same person, because Erastus was a common name in Biblical times.
24. According to Scripture, a false prophet and a sorcerer by the name of Bar-Jesus was struck blind by Paul. Bar-Jesus, however, was also known by a second name staring with the letter 'E'. What was his name, as per Acts 13:8?

Answer: Elymas

The story of Bar-Jesus, also known as Elymas, is told in Acts 13:6-12. According to Scripture, Paul encountered the false prophet and sorcerer in Paphos, a community on the island of Cyprus.

Scripture states Elymas was opposing the Gospel message when Paul opted to take action. Acts 13:10-11 quotes Paul as proclaiming Elymas was the "son of the devil" and the "enemy of all righteousness". After announcing the false prophet would not see the sun "for a time", Scripture states a dark mist fell on Elymas, rendering him unable to see.

Scripture states the proconsul Sergius Paulus had been accompanying Elymas and when he saw what had happened, he became a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
25. What sleepy young man plunged to his death out of a third-story window and was then brought back to life by Paul? (Acts 20:7-12)

Answer: Eutychus

Eutychus fell asleep and plunged out of a third-story window at Troas, when Paul preached on and on, according to Acts 20:7-12. After Eutychus tumbled out the window, people rushed downstairs and found him dead. According to Scripture, Paul raised the young man from the dead and went back upstairs and ate and did some more preaching.

No age is given for Eutychus, but the perception of many people is he was young, possibly in his teens. Troas is in present day Turkey, south of the ancient city of Troy.
