Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to John 9:1-7, what affliction did Jesus cure a man of after He told him to wash in the pool of Siloam?

Answer: blindness

John 9:1-7 tells of an unnamed man born blind receiving His sight after Jesus put some clay on his eyes and asked him to wash in the pool of Siloam. According to the passage, Jesus spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva and then applied the clay to the man's eyes. After the clay was applied, Jesus told him to wash in the pool of Siloam and presto -- his sight was restored.

The chapter goes on to tell of the Pharisees being highly agitated about the miracle.

According to Wikipedia, the pool of Siloam was a rock-cut pool in the southern part of Jerusalem.
2. According to Matthew 12:10-14, what miraculous healing on the Sabbath prompted the Pharisees to plot to kill Jesus?

Answer: The healing of a man with a withered hand

The Pharisees were livid and then some when Jesus healed a man with a withered hand. Making the miracle even more atrocious in the eyes of the Pharisees, Jesus performed the miraculous healing in a synagogue.

Just prior to performing the miracle, the Pharisees had asked Jesus if it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath. In response, Jesus asked them two questions: "What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep?" After asking the Pharisees the questions, Jesus proclaimed it was lawful to do good on the Sabbath.

Scripture goes on to tell of Jesus turning to the man and asking him to stretch out his withered hand and when he did so it became normal.

In response, the Pharisees left the synagogue and plotted "how they might destroy Him."

See Matthew 12:10-14 for details.
3. What was highly unusual about Jesus' miraculous healing of a Roman centurion's paralyzed servant at Capernaum, as per Matthew 8:5-13?

Answer: Jesus healed the servant without even seeing him.

According to Matthew 8:5-13, Jesus healed a paralyzed servant of a Roman centurion at Capernaum without even seeing the man He healed. The passage tells of a centurion approaching Jesus, telling Him he had a servant who was at home "paralyzed, dreadfully tormented." Jesus responded by stating He would go to the centurion's house to heal the servant. However, the centurion said Christ didn't have to go to such bother because he was convinced He could heal him without even visiting his servant.

Verse 10 in the NKJV states Jesus "marveled" at the faith of the centurion, and told the people who were with Him, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel."

The passage concludes by stating the centurion's servant was healed "that same hour."
4. According to Luke 5:4-11, what disciples did Jesus call after blessing them with an enormous catch of fish?

Answer: Peter, James and John

Going by the account in Luke 5:4-11, Peter, James and John were called to be disciples after Jesus blessed them with an enormous catch of fish. The passage tells of the disciples fishing all night and coming up empty, when Jesus told Peter to "launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." Peter followed the instructions of Jesus and to his amazement they caught such a great number of fish "their net was breaking". Another boat was called in to assist with the gigantic catch with both boats being filled to such an extent they began to sink.

The passage goes on to tell of Peter falling at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" In response, Jesus told Peter, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men."

The passage concludes by telling of the fishermen forsaking all and following Christ.
5. Mark 7:31-37 tells of Jesus miraculously healing a man in Decapolis. What condition was the man suffering from?

Answer: He was deaf with a speech impediment

Scripture tells of Jesus miraculously healing an unnamed man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. (In the NIV, it states the man could "hardly talk.") The man was healed after Jesus put His fingers in his ears and He spat and touched his tongue and then looked up to heaven and simply said, "Be opened." Immediately the man could hear and his speech was normal.

For details, see Mark 7:31-37.

According to the website Christiananswers.net, Decapolis means 'ten cities' in Greek. The area was southeast of the Sea of Galilee and the website states it was largely inhabited by Greeks.
6. Out of the four miracles performed by Jesus and listed below, which one is documented in only the Gospel of John?

Answer: Turning water into wine

Turning water into wine is the correct answer. The miracle is documented in John 2:1-7 and nowhere else in the Bible.

Meanwhile, details about the raising of Jairus' daughter from the dead can be found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. On two different occasions Jesus walked on water and fed a multitude with a pittance of food; details about the miracles can be found in the four Gospels.
7. Scripture states a woman persistently pleaded to Jesus to heal her daughter who was demon possessed and she wasn't prepared to take 'no' for an answer. According to Matthew 15:21-40 and Mark 7:24-30, was she Jewish or was she Gentile?

Answer: Gentile

The persistent woman was a Gentile, according to Matthew 15:21-40 and Mark 7:24-30. The two passages tell of the persistent woman approaching Jesus asking Him to heal her daughter who was possessed by demons. Scripture indicates she wasn't prepared to go home until Jesus performed the miraculous cure. The incident happened in the region of Tyre and Sidon and the woman was a Canaanite.

Matthew 15:21-28 tells of the woman repeatedly attempting to get Christ's attention and being unsuccessful. Finally, Jesus is quoted as telling the woman, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs." In response, the persistent woman said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

The passage concludes by stating Jesus told the Gentile woman she had great faith and her request would be granted. Sure enough, Scripture states "her daughter was healed from that very hour."

Some Christians find the passage difficult to understand, wondering why Jesus would have not acted promptly to assist the woman. However, notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the passage emphasizes Christ's main commitment was to the Jewish people. "Jesus would always give the Jews the first opportunity to accept Him as their Messiah," the notes explain.
8. According to Luke 14:1, Jesus was inside the house of a Pharisee when he miraculously healed a man with dropsy.

Answer: True

True. While the Pharisees were often vehemently opposed to Jesus, there were occasions when they were friendly to Christ -- at least for an ever-so-brief period of time. A case in point is Luke 14:1-6 which tells of Jesus being in the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath. The passage goes on to tell of Jesus miraculously healing an unnamed man with dropsy and wouldn't you know it: the Pharisees were upset because the healing took place on the Sabbath.

(Rather than use the term dropsy, the NIV states the man was "suffering from abnormal swelling of his body.")
9. According to Scripture, a paralyzed man on a stretcher was taken by his four friends to a house Jesus was in to be miraculously healed and they couldn't enter through the doors because of a large crowd of people. As a result, the friends of the paralyzed man made a hole in the roof of the house and lowered him to Jesus.

Answer: True

True. When people say they find the Bible boring, I don't know where they're coming from. One of the numerous highly unusual accounts in the Good Book involves a paralyzed man whose four friends made a hole in the roof of a
house Jesus was in and then proceeded to lower the man on a stretcher so Jesus could heal him. Scripture states the house was crammed full of people and the four friends of the paralyzed man could not enter through the doors.

Sure enough, Jesus healed the paralyzed man, who is not named in Scripture. The miraculous healing took place in Capernaum.

For details, see Mark 2:1-12 and Luke 5:16-26.
10. According to Mark 1:21-28, Jesus miraculously cured a man with an unclean spirit in a synagogue. In what community did the miracle take place?

Answer: Capernaum

According to Scripture, Jesus performed the miracle in Capernaum, a fishing village on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee. According to Wikipedia, the community had a population of about 1,500 people in Biblical times.

While the NKJV states that Jesus miraculously cured the unnamed man of an unclean spirit, the NIV uses the term impure spirit. Meanwhile, notes in the NKJV Study Bible state unclean spirit is another term for demon.

See Mark 1:21-28 for details about the miraculous healing.
