Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The sin a woman was accused of when she was presented to Jesus by the Pharisees

Answer: What is adultery?

John 8:1-12 tells of the Pharisees taking a woman to Jesus after she had been caught in adultery. While the Pharisees were livid with the unnamed woman, Jesus made the famous statement in the NKJV: "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first." The passage goes on to tell of her accusers leaving one by one, "beginning with the oldest even to the last." After all her accusers left, Jesus told the woman to "go and sin no more."

What I find interesting in the account there is no mention of the man who committed adultery with the woman. The passage indicates she was caught "in the very act" and one would think the Pharisees would've also brought the man before Jesus as well. It's as if the Pharisees only wanted to humiliate the woman and make a point with Jesus.
2. The country Jesus' family fled to when He was less than two years old

Answer: What is Egypt?

When Jesus was less than two years old, His family fled to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. Matthew 2:13-18 tells of Joseph, the husband of Mary, being warned in a dream by an angel to take his family to Egypt as King Herod was plotting to kill Jesus.

The passage tells of the highly paranoid Herod ordering the execution of all male children two and under in Bethlehem and district to make sure the Baby Jesus would not grow up and replace him as king.
3. The hometown of Jesus where people attempted to kill Him

Answer: What is Nazareth?

The correct answer is Nazareth. According to Luke 4:28-30, the people of Christ's hometown sought to kill Him when He stated He was the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy.

The verses in the NKJV state: "So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way."
4. The only Gospel to tell of Jesus raising a widow's son from the dead at Nain

Answer: What is Luke?

Details about Jesus raising a widow's son from the dead at Nain can be found in only the Gospel of Luke. The miraculous event is reported in Luke 7:11-16. I find it interesting this is the only time Nain is mentioned in the Christian Bible. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Nain is about ten miles (sixteen kilometres) southeast of Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus.

No names are given for the widow or her son.
5. The only parable told by Jesus that makes reference to specific place-names

Answer: What is the Parable of Good Samaritan?

Jesus is credited with telling thirty-nine different parables in the New Testament but the Parable of the Good Samaritan is the only one in which particular towns are identified. (In other words, it is the only parable with place-names.)

The parable, found in Luke 10:25-37, tells of a man travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho when he was robbed, brutally beaten and left by the roadside. Incredibly, two men, a Levite and a priest, passed by the victim without offering to help. However, an unnamed Samaritan man came to the rescue of the victim and took charge in making sure he would make a full recovery.

It is significant a Samaritan stopped to help the victim because in Biblical times, Samaritans were looked down upon. In fact, most Jews would not even talk to a Samaritan. In the parable, Jesus proclaimed love knows no national boundaries, as per notes in the NIV Study Bible.
6. The disciple who informed Andrew a Greek delegation wanted to meet with Jesus

Answer: Who is Philip?

John 12:20-26 tells of a Greek delegation meeting with Philip, one of the original Twelve Disciples, and requesting permission to meet with Jesus. Philip in turn approached Andrew, another one of the original Twelve Disciples, and in turn Philip and Andrew told Jesus.

In part, Jesus is quoted as stating in the NKJV, "If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor."
7. The worker in the early church who was set free from prison, as per Hebrews 13:23

Answer: Who is Timothy?

It might come as a surprise to some quiz players, but Timothy is the correct answer. Hebrews 13:23 makes reference to Timothy being released from prison but no specific details are given. The verse in the NKJV states, "Know that our brother Timothy has been set free, with whom I shall see you if he comes shortly."

Timothy was a young worker in the early church who was known for being timid. No one knows for certain who wrote the Book of Hebrews. Some scholars believe Paul was the writer but others strongly dispute this belief.
8. The blind man at Jericho who proclaimed Jesus to be the Son of David

Answer: Who is Bartimaeus?

As Christ was travelling along the road to Jericho, Mark 10:47 tells of Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, shouting, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" By proclaiming Jesus as the "Son of David", Bartimaeus was confirming Christ was the Messiah. 'Son of David' is an Old Testament Messianic title that can be found in Isaiah 11:1-3, Jeremiah 23:5-6 and Ezekiel 34:23-24. This is the only place in the Gospel of Mark where the title 'Son of David' is used.

Moments after getting Christ's attention, Scripture tells of Bartimaeus miraculously gaining his sight. Jesus in turn told Bartimaeus his faith had made him well.

For complete details, see Mark 10:46-52.
9. The man who is associated with a parable of Jesus in which a beggar has dogs lick his sores

Answer: Who is Lazarus?

In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus tells a parable of Lazarus, a poor, helpless beggar who lived at the gate of an unnamed rich man who dressed in fine clothes and "fared sumptuously every day. According to Verses 20 and 21 in the NKJV, Lazarus was "full of sores" and "the dogs came and licked his sores."

The passage goes on to tell of Lazarus and the rich man dying with Lazarus ending up by the side of Abraham and the rich man in a place of torment. The rich man then requests Lazarus to come and "dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue for I am tormented in this flame." However, Abraham tells the rich man his request cannot be fulfilled because there is a "great gulf" and no one can cross over it.

The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus can be found in only the Gospel of Luke.
10. The name of the queen who the Ethiopian eunuch served

Answer: What is Candace?

The Ethiopian eunuch was a man "of great authority" who served Queen Candace of Ethiopia, as per Acts 8:27 in the NKJV. Scripture tells of the unnamed eunuch travelling home from Jerusalem in a chariot when Philip encountered him. Noticing the eunuch was reading the words of the prophet Isaiah, Philip asked him if he understood what he was reading. When the eunuch confessed he did not understand what he was reading, Philip provided a detailed explanation and ended up converting the eunuch to Christianity.

For details, see Acts 8:26-40.
